:) Truly said, each has its own flavour and aroma.
This too seems to be a generalization, just like the one you mentioned about relatives-friends. IMHO there seems to be little difference between the distribution of mentality in people who chant manthras and those who don't. In my personal experience, I have known some really cruel personalities (who actions seemed pretty 'violent' at heart) who are well established Veda chanters.. and some really simple and good hearted people who know nothing except to say except to say some god's name. Again, I have noticed the opposite kind of people too. Finally imho a statement that 'our daughter will be having a good time in a place where Veda manthras resound' is quite illogical.Quote:

Prasad,
I also agree with u. But I look at it this way.
The chanting DOES have postive effect , and to the extent it has minute effect on ppl's mind set (may be negligible)
With alll that if a person is still disturbed, then he would have been more disturbed without chants (give it 2 percent)
Without all those postive vibration if a person is wonderful and reflects well with his surroundings, such person would vibrate with more energy (give it 2 percent) with chantings.
UNLESS (exception clause:) he is a gnani, where mantras and other vibration does not matter much as he himself is like a plain clear water, un perturbed.
'The journey' and 'the enlightenment' of the seeker are two illusions that don't exist. Morals, good-bad values, etc etc do nothing to serve those that seek Freedom. They basically maintain control and sanity in a society, but Freedom lies within and without all these things. The man who seeks Freedom goes with the flow of the natural order of things.. and Freedom comes to him as simply (or as complicatedly) as the flowering of a plant that has grown without being desperate to understand with logic or reason the miracle of Life.Quote:

Of course, by good I mean that which is beneficial to the overall spiritual/mental/physical well being of one or many beings of the universe. In action, I include thought, word and deed, and thereby manthra-chanting is included too. This is why I believe the story of Valmiki who meditates on a 'tree' ( mara-mara) ends in a positive result, not because "mara" was morphed into Rama, although that could very well have played a part. Ultimately continuous intention drives the person towards one's result, not the action (external manifestation of the intention itself.. although it is essential).

IMHO a human being is an extremely complicated and constantly changing machine (conscious machine :) ) and such 'general' time-invariant observations ('in the kali yuga' blah blah) are pretty useless when it comes to an actual relationship (how many people would have such thoughts in their head when they are in the relationship and not in solitude???). Instead the relationship itself is to be understood by the those in a relationship as a single living entity where every individual contributes to the whole.Quote:
