1965ஆம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை 9ஆம் தேதி இப் படம் முதன்முதலாக வெளியானபோது என்ன உற்சாகம் இருந்திருக்குமோ அந்த உற்சாகத்துக்கு கொஞ்சமும் குறையாத வகையில் எம்ஜிஆர் ரசிகர்களிடையே மகிழ்ச்சி வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டதைக் காண முடிந்தது.
எம்ஜிஆருடன் ஜெயலலிதா இணைந்து நடித்த முதல் திரைப்படமான இதில், நாகேஷ், எம்.என்.நம்பியார், ஆர்.எஸ். மனோகர் உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் நடித்துள்ளனர். பி.ஆர். பந்துலு இயக்கத்தில், படத்தை அவரே தயாரித்தார். பந்துலு பண நெருக்கடியில் இருப்பதை அறிந்து இந்தப் படத்தை அவருக்கு அளித்தவர் எம்ஜிஆர் என்று போற்றப்படுகிறது.
இந்தத் திரைப்படத்தை திவ்யா பிலிம்ஸ் உரிமையாளர் ஜி. சொக்கலிங்கம் இன்றைய நவீன தொழில்நுட்பத்துக்கு தகுந்தபடி மாற்றியமைத்து தமிழகம், கேரளம், கர்நாடகம் உள்பட 120-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட திரையரங்குகளில் திரையிட்டுள்ளார். டிடிஎஸ் 5.1 தொழில்நுட்பத்தில், ரெஸ்டோரஷேன், டிஐ, கலர் மாற்றம் செய்து வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
திருநெல்வேலி, சங்கரன்கோவில், அம்பாசமுத்திரம், தென்காசி திரையரங்குகளில் இப்படம் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.
திருநெல்வேலி ராம் திரையரங்கில் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அதிகாலையிலேயே ரசிகர்கள், எம்ஜிஆர் உருவப்படம் பொறித்த பேட்ஜ்களையும், டாலர்களையும், கொடிகளையும் உடலில் கட்டிய வண்ணம் குவியத் தொடங்கினர். திரையரங்கில் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த 80 அடி உயர எம்ஜிஆர், ஜெயலலிதா கட்-அவுட்களுக்கு பாலாபிஷேகம் செய்தனர்.
எம்ஜிஆர் உருவப்படத்துக்கு தேங்காயில் சூடம் ஏற்றி தீபாராதனை செலுத்தி வழிபட்டனர்.
திரைப்படம் பார்க்க வந்த அனைவருக்கும் லட்டு வழங்கினர். சரவெடிகளும் வெடிக்கப்பட்டன.
திரைப்படத்தை காணவந்த திருநெல்வேலியைச் சேர்ந்த ஹோட்டல் தொழிலாளர் எம்ஜிஆர் முருகன் (60) கூறுகையில், 15 பைசா, 25 பைசா கொடுத்து இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்தோம். இப்போது ரூ.100 கொடுத்து பார்க்கிறோம். ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் கொடுத்தாலும் எப்போது ரிலீஸானாலும் பார்க்கத் தயாராக உள்ளோம் என்றார். சிறப்புக் காட்சி டிக்கெட் ரூ.100-க்கு விற்பனையானது. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து ரூ.80, 60, ரூ.30 என டிக்கெட் விற்பனை நடைபெறும் என திரையரங்க உரிமையாளர் தெரிவித்தார்.
Without a doubt, MGR is one of the few icons of Indian cinema who commands a frenzied fan following, long after he stopped making movies. Now, more than 25 years after his demise, one of his biggest hits ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ is set to be re-released at the theatres and fan frenzy is building up again.
G. Chockalingam, of Divya Films, who digitally restored the 1965 B.R. Panthulu-directed film, says it will release in more than 120 theatres on Friday. “I was planning a limited release but I have been overwhelmed by the demand from theatres. In Chennai alone, the film is releasing in seven screens, and across various cities, the weekend shows have already been booked.” Delays pushed the film from its original release date in January.
Meanwhile, die-hard fans of the actor can’t wait. A printing press worker Siva Perumal, secretary of ‘Puratchi Thalaivar Amma Bhakthargal Kuzhu,’ said the fan club had blocked a chunk of tickets at Albert Theatre in Egmore for Sunday matinee show. A cutout size garland and milk ‘abhishekams’, are part of his plan. Perumal first watched ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ at the erstwhile Mekala theatre four decades ago.

There was a small puja, complete with flowers and sweets. There were slogans and processions, and interviews to the media. The crowd was mostly men, with a few women and a family or two.
There have been many hit films before, and bigger ones since. But for the eager fans of matinee idol and late chief minister M G Ramachandran, who gathered Friday before Devi Theatre in Chennai, the film Ayirathil Oruvan is just what the name says: one in a thousand.
Directed by producer-director B R Panthulu, the film was originally released 49 years ago, way back in 1965, after MGR was established as the biggest box-office draw in Tamil Nadu but before he became an active politician. And this was the first film in which he was paired with the popular young actress who went on to rule the screen and state, AIADMK general secretary and present Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
“I first watched the film about 30 years ago. By then, it was a cult film in Tamil Nadu, what with the indirect message it contained, the dialogues that highlighted injustice in society and the plot that portrays the hero as a true leader of the oppressed,” said L Muthuswamy, a clerk at a private company, who had taken a day’s leave to watch the film once again. Born in the year the film was released, he said he had lost count the number of times he had watched the film.
The re-release of a film is not something new in Tamil Nadu where small theatres regularly run old hits that offer value for money, without the risk and money involved in securing new releases. In fact, a theatre in Chennai had run Ayirathil Oruvan just a few weeks ago. What is new about this release is that it has been digitally restored, the quality of the visuals enhanced and the audio raised to 5.1 channel from mono.
“My first attempt to digitise classic films began with Karnan, a mythological film which had Sivaji Ganesan in the title role. When we released it in 2012, it did very well, running for more than 25 days in 30 of the 72 theatres where it was released. One high class theatre ran it for 157 days. That is when I zeroed-in on Ayirathil Oruvan,” said G Chockalingam of Dhivya Films, the company behind the digitised version.
Rival politicians are not amused to find a hit from the past that has the AIADMK founder and present leader as lead characters at a time when the state is headed to Lok Sabha polls. Though he died over two decades ago, MGR still has committed fans — and dedicated voters — which Jaya inherited.

The glittering confetti that soared to the ceiling as the magic title ‘MGR’ popped on screen was of course reminiscent of the traditional ‘first day, first show’ experience inside a cinema hall. But the jostling, the queues, the noise and chaos that were also associated with a typical MGR movie opening show of yore were, however, missing as the digitally restored version of the 1965 Tamil film, Aayirathil Oruvan (One in a Thousand Man) was released here on Friday.
Despite several new films seeing the light of the day the same day, the freshly minted 49-year-old blockbuster opened in over 120 screens all over the state. In a near-packed standalone downscale cinema hall in Chennai, many who turned up for the noon show seemed to have already seen and savoured the film when it was released first. In the 14-seater box, where the ticket rate is as high as Rs 50, almost everyone should be over 50 years.
With no youth to enact the hyper-charged drama that usually unfolds at cinema hall and multiplexes when new flicks are launched, the sprawling campus in Vadapalani was a scene of quietude as people trickled in alone or as twosomes or small groups. There were no boisterous groups of friends vrooming in superbikes or honking horns from cars, queuing up at the gate, blocking traffic.
But for the handful of women, the crowd was predominantly men, most of them over 55 years. They were attired differently in dhoti, lungi, pants, khaki uniforms and jeans. There were men who looked like temple priests with their smear of sacred ash on the forehead and tufts and there were men in colourful kurtas and cooling glasses. But everyone waited patiently for the gates.
Inside the hall, the seats started filling up from the back and the front rows, from where the confetti normally comes, did not fill up at all. And the confetti came from the back rows and it was not the usual bits of paper but marigolds.
As one walked out through the aisle after the show, the entire floor was littered with marigold, thrown in bunches at various points of time during the nearly three hour screening.
It started during the title scene and then went on during the mellifluous song sequences and some moments of ‘meaningful’ dialogue delivery.
As a film that should have been ahead of its time in terms of technical excellence and also in creating a do-gooder image for MGR, Aayirathil Oruvan portrays its swashbuckling hero as a committed leader of the people, reading to make any sacrifice for his followers.
The movie also saw its leading lady, J Jayalalithaa, giving a sterling performance with impeccable dialogue delivery.
The crowd savoured every moment, fully engrossed in the action and drama and enjoying the melodious music, tapping foot and swaying their heads. No catcalls, no hootings, no loud comments and no jokes. The crowd was there to watch the movie.
