உங்கள் விமர்சனத்தில் சின்ன சின்ன விஷயங்களைக்கூட ரொம்ப கச்சிதமாக குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். அதனால் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் பார்த்திருந்த போதிலும் காட்சிகள் ஒவ்வொன்றாக நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றன (குறிப்பாக பணப்பெட்டியின் பூட்டை உடைக்கும்போது நடிகர்திலகத்தின் முகபாவம், அதில் மின்னி மின்னி மறையும் உணர்ச்சி கொந்தளிப்புகள்). பாலச்சந்தர் இவரை ஃப்ரீயாக விட்டு விட்டார் என்று தோன்றுகிறது.
உங்கள் ஆய்வில் விஜயலலிதாவையும் ஜோதிலட்சுமியையும் கூட குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கலாம். நான் சொல்லக்காரணம், இருவரும் அப்போதைய படங்களின் கவர்ச்சி ஆட்டக்காரர்கள். ஆனால் இப்படத்தில் அருமையாக கேரக்டர் ரோல் செய்திருப்பார்கள். கல்யாண வீட்டின் பரபரப்புக்கிடையே, நடிகர்திலகமும், கே.ஆர். விஜயாவும் தனியறையில் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ரகசியத்தை ஜோதிலட்சுமி கேட்டுவிடும் இடம் ஒரு நல்ல திருப்புமுனை. அதுபோல, மன உளைச்சலில் இருந்து அமைதி பெற விஜயலலிதாவின் குடிசை முன் இருக்கும் கயிற்றுக்கட்டிலில் நடிகர்திலகம் படுத்திருக்கும் காட்சியும் பசுமையாக நம் மனதில் விரிகிறது. கள்ளம் கபடமில்லாத விஜயலலிதாவின் கேரக்டர் நம் மனதைக்கவரும்.
அதுபோலவே குழந்தை ரோஜாரமணியும். கொலை நடந்ததைப் பார்த்த அதிர்ச்சியில் வாய் பேசமுடியாமல் போக, உண்மையைச் சொல்லி அப்பாவைக்காப்பாற்ற முடியாமல் பரிதாபமாகப் பார்க்கும் பார்வை நம் மனதை உருக்கும்.
படத்தின் துவக்கத்தில், கோர்ட்டில் வாதம் எதுவும் செய்யாமல், மூக்கு கண்ணாடியை மட்டும் காட்டி, சாட்சியை பிறழ வைக்கும் காட்சியிலும், இறுதிக்கட்ட கோர்ட் சீனில், வாய்பேச முடியாத குழந்தையைப் பேச வைக்க, நடிகர்திலகம் தப்பிப்பதுபோல பாவம் காட்டி, போலீஸாரால் துப்பாக்கியை வெடிக்க வைக்க, குழந்தை அதிர்ச்சியில் 'அப்பா' என்று அலறி பேச துவங்கும் காட்சியிலும்.... "கே.பாலச்சந்தர்".... "பிரஸண்ட் சார்".
ஒருசில கேள்விகளுக்கு எப்போதும் பதில் கிடைக்காமல் புதிராகவே இருக்கும். 'எதிரொலி' படம் ஏன் வெற்றிபெறவில்லை என்பதும் அப்படிப்பட்ட கேள்விகளில் ஒன்று..

ரொம்ப சந்தோஷமாக இருக்கிறது. காரணம், அதிகம் பேசப்படாத எதிரொலி, மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பு படங்களைப்பற்றி இங்கு பேசப்படுகிறது, விவாதிக்கப்படுகிறது. அனைவரது கருத்துக்களும் மிகவும் அருமையாக உள்ளன.
இரண்டு படங்களுமே ரசிகர்களாலும் மக்களாலும் மிகவும் எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்ட படங்கள். காரணம் இருபெரும் இயக்குநர்களும் நடிகர்திலகத்துடன் இணைந்ததுதான். ஒருவர் முதல்முறையாக நடிகர்திலகத்தை இயக்கினார். இன்னொருவர் நீண்ட காலத்துக்குப்பின்னர் மீண்டும் நடிகர்திலகத்தை அணுகினார்.
'பாதுகாப்பு' படத்தில் பீம்சிங் மக்களை ஏமாற்றினார்.
'எதிரொலி'யில் பாலச்சந்தர் மக்களை ஏமாற்றவில்லை. ஆனால் மக்கள் அவரை ஏமாற்றி விட்டனர்.
ஆம், ஒரு மாபெரும் வெற்றிப்படத்துக்குரிய எல்லா அம்சங்களும் இருந்தும் 'எதிரொலி' ஏன் வெற்றியடையவில்லை என்பது இன்று வரை புரியாத புதிர். சிவாஜியும் பாலச்சந்தரும் ஏன் இப்படத்துக்குப்பின்னர் மீண்டும் இணையவில்லை என்று இங்கு நிறையப்பேர் கேள்வி எழுப்பினர். அதற்கு ஒரே விடை, 'மக்கள் இப்படத்துக்கு தோல்வியை பரிசளித்ததுதான் இந்த இணை தொடராததற்கு காரணம்' என்று ஆணித்தரமாக சொல்வேன்.
ஆனால் இப்போது பார்ப்பவர்கள் ஆதங்கப்படுகிறார்கள், ஏன் இப்படம் வெற்றியடையவில்லையென்று.

தவப்புதல்வன் படம் மனதுக்கு இதம் தரும் ரம்மியமான படங்களில் ஒன்று. ஆஹா.. ஓஹோ என்ற ஆடம்பரங்கள், அளவுக்கதிகமான எதிர்பார்ப்பு எதுவுமில்லாமல் அமைதியான படம்.
அதிலும் அந்த மகாகவி தான்சேன் வேடமும், அதில் இடம்பெறும் 'இசை கேட்டால் புவி அசைந்தாடும்' பாடல் ஒவ்வொருமுறையும் என்னைக்கவரும். அப்பாடலின் அனைத்து அம்சங்களும் எனக்குப்பிடிக்கும் (கே.ஆர்.விஜயாவின் பக்கத்தில் நிற்கும் வைத்தியர் உள்பட).

தான்சேன் பாடலைக்கேட்டு நோய் தீர்ந்ததா தெரியாது. ஆனால் மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் இசைகேட்டு நம் கவலைகள் தீரும் என்பது நிதர்சன உண்மை.

As you rightly said, the two ladies in that film did very well. Especiallly, Vijayalalitha excelled as naive gal who offers a little bit of consolation to troubled NT.
One of us have actually written about Thavaputhalvan sometimes back, I think. I need to check, because that was the next film I thought of writing.

நன்றி சாரதா. நேற்று வெகு ஆவலாக படத்தை பார்க்க உட்கார்ந்தேன். டைட்டில் போட்டவுடன் இந்த செய்தியை (நடிகர் திலகம்) டைப் செய்துவிட்டு, சப்மிட் கொடுக்கும்போது கரண்ட் போய்விட்டது. இரண்டு மணி நேரத்திற்கும் மேலாக கரண்ட் வரவில்லை அதானால் படமும் பார்க்கவில்லை. நடிகர் திலகம் சோவுடன் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போது (எம்.ஆர்.ஆர். வாசுவும், ஏ. சகுந்தலாவும் உள்ளே வருவார்கள்) போன கரண்ட் படம் முடிந்தவுடன்தான் வந்தது (வாழ்க வீராசாமி). ஆகையால் இந்த போஸ்ட்-ஐ கூட இன்று காலை தான் போஸ்ட் செய்தேன்.Quote:

There are many emotional scenes where there was a lot of scope for music director to enliven the proceedings. Here it was total failure. At the same the surprise element was Vijayalalitha and Jyothilakshmi. Particularly for Vijayalalitha, she appeared in prominent roles in two films in her career with NT, both of which were released in 1970 - Edhiroli & Sorkkam. And the other one being Nootrukku Nooru (this time too it was KB). When the first screening of Edhiroli ended on the first day at the Wellington Theatre, I could see the fans waiting for the next show, eagerly questioning "how is it"? our friends answered "lbw" (those days umpire's decision on lbw is final and no body could question it even if they have doubt. But at least now there are technical means by which you can confirm). The batsman was neither bold nor caught nor run out. In that sense, our team of fans came out from the theatre and told to our close friends that we do not have much hope (of course it was discussed a few yards away from the theatre in a hotel). But to me it was really a delight to watch and I was criticised by my fellow fan friends for my good opinion on the film. And I particularly wanted this combine to succeed, because I liked it very much. Had there been a few more films with NT KB combo, Tamil cinema would have marvelled more.

Thanks for your comment. Your "live" reporting really helps, especially us Malaysians who never get to know the happening then and there.
But your umpire analogy was lost on me - this is really bad, but I am cricket-illiterate. Cricket being not really that popular here. But I understand what you were trying to say, or what the fans were trying to say.
I think we got a few analysis here as to why the film flopped. It did not have the popular flavour of that time - which Murali-sar pointed out some times ago - when Fans were expecting more action oriented NT flicks. This could be one reason. And of course, NT's biggest rival that that peak time, NT himself. His films released closely, also often pointed out by Murali-sar.
This and more could explain its failure. I hope fans like us can revisit it, and give it its due honour.

Saw bits of Kandhan karunai last night. Blimey! Murugan was annoying as hell up to the part when he grows up and become the Murugan we all know, played by Siva Kumar.
There were lots of scene where I want to take the boy aside and cane him. I guess blame goes to APN for not making the kid smarter, affable to the point when he was harrasing Sundra...I mean, Avvaiyar, we would have laughed and clapped with him.
Then, the film takes off when NT appears. Sheer pleasure watching him in verbal war with Ashogan, another competent actor who, the more anger he shows, the better he acts.
Then, the story moved on to romance and...frankly...I lost interest. I feel this is probably the least favourite APN/NT/Puranam flicks. My mother, who is always more open minded than me when it comes to films, thinks that NTs role was not necessary. How to disagree with mom...sigh.

NT's role was not necessary, you are right. But the producer and distributor badly wanted it. It was not produced by APN but by AL.Srinivasan, the brother of Kannadasan. it was titled as Kandha Leela. AVM Chettiar recommended Sivakumar for the Murugan role. Gemini and Savithiri were the leading players. It got struck in the middle. Distributors were not willing to buy and they wanted NT to be included. AL.S and APN went to NT and to bail them out, he agreed to do it.
The gentleman he is, he asked APN not to remove anyone but instead asked APN to create a character for him that can be fittd in to the story. Thus Veerabahu character was created and for NT, it was almost a guest role. Still that was enough for the film to run 100 days. Considering the time of release, it was a great feat because, it hit the screens for 1967 Pongal and a day before, an incident that became the deciding factor of Tamilnadu's political history had happened.

இன்னொரு பெரிய ஆச்சரியம். மிகச்சிறந்த நகைச்சுவை நடிகையான மனோரமாவின் நகைச்சுவை நடிப்பு 'சரஸ்வதி சபதம்', 'கந்தன் கருணை', 'திருவருட்செல்வர்' மூன்று படங்களிலும் எடுபடாமல் போனது மட்டுமல்ல, எரிச்சலையும் மூட்டியது. (தவறு ஏ.பி.என்.மீதுதான். அதற்கு வட்டியும் முதலுமாக 'தில்லானா'வில் இவரை அற்புதமாக பயன்படுத்திக்கொண்டார்).

ஒரு சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன் நடிகர் திலகத்திற்கு தில்லானா படத்தில் பாடல் இல்லை என்று சொன்ன போது இங்கே சிலர் கிண்டல் செய்தனர். அதில் மட்டுமல்ல எதிரொலி மற்றும் இந்த மோட்டார் சுந்தரம் பிள்ளை படத்திலும் அவருக்கு பாடலே இல்லை. அவர் உச்சத்தில் இருந்த காலகட்டத்தில் வெளிவந்த படங்கள் இவை என்று நினைக்கும்போது பிரமிப்பு கலந்த மதிப்பு தோன்றுகிறது.
அது மட்டுமல்ல MSP வெளியான நேரத்தில் வந்த போட்டி படத்தை பார்த்தால், இந்த படத்தின் 100 நாட்கள் வெற்றி மிக பெரிய வெற்றியாக தெரிகிறது. நடிகர் திலகம் எப்போதும் சினிமா சாதனையாளராகவே இருந்திருக்கிறார்.

For those of you who have not seen the film Thuli Visham, Moser Baer has brought it out in VCD format. May be soon in DVD. Since this is not a popular film, the copies may be restricted. Today’s movie makers are more interested in items than a good storyline, which is why good dramas are not made into films. But my recent play “Swadeshi Aiyar” is to be picturised soon by a corporate producer.
Is comedy the mainstay of films today?
Comedy has always been a plus point for Tamil films. But according to my guru Nagesh, there are two types of comedians — those whose TIME is good and those whose TIMING is good. I hope I belong to the second category.
There are several awards for stage productions but not as many for films. Why?
I have won many awards for my stage performances, but then I have also received ‘Kalaimamani’ and ‘Kalaivanar Virudhu’ from the Tamil Nadu Government and several from private organisations. Even a ‘Nandi’ award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. But the biggest awardis the applause I get from my audience even today.
You directed a film (Kathai Kathaiyam Karanamam), but stopped with it…
Though I have directed several successful serials, I did just one film. Soon I plan to direct a significant film.
At the end of the day what would you like to be called — a stage, TV or cinema actor?
I am an all-rounder having done classic roles on stage, TV and in films. But I would be happy if I am called a complete actor and a die hard Sivaji Ganesan fan.
