Edmund Spencer lived from 1552? To 1599. We shall enjoy his poem “One Day I Wrote Her Name Upon the Strand” and then try rendering it in Tamiz:
One day I wrote her name upon the strand,
But came the waves and washed it away;
Again I wrote it with a second hand,
But came the tide and made my pains his prey;
Vain man said she, that dost in vain assay
A mortal thing so to immortalize,
For I myself shall like to this decay,

In this stanza, the sage-poet Paranjchothi Munivar (Author of ThiruviLayaadal Puraanam) describes the state of women of the agricultural tract who indulge in the drinking of toddy, a well known alcoholic drink used for a long time in the past in Tamil Nadu. The location under description in the stanza is Madurai - Tirunelveli area of the Pandian Kingdom. These women are described by the terms "uzaththiyar" and "nuLaichchiyar". The operation carried out by the agriculturalists to remove weeds from their rice fields is under focus by the sage-poet.It was during such operations that the "uzaththiyar" drank toddy, losing their feminine inhibitions and anxieties, becoming carefree and happy, and in this state, the sage-poet compares them to women who have had just indulgence with males. This post-activity conduct of the drunken women and those subjected to other indulgence are cited to be similar. The difficulty to co-ordinate one's movements and the ability to react quickly are pointedly referred through the presence of particular "symptomatic" acts or conduct. These acts are: slurred speech from their pinkish lips, perspiration in their faces, their rolling red eyes and the disorderly state of their hair and dress exposing some parts of their person. Otherwise than in such state of intoxication, these symptoms do not occur.
In such an intoxicated state, how did they remove the weeds? That issue is sung in the verses after this verse and this verse above is important for the coming verses in the puranam.

UDUMALAI NARAYANAK KAVI
He was born before cinema and was an excellent poet who was known simply as kaviraayar to his close friends and admirers. He was equal to Papanaasam Sivan in the eyes of many, in composing poems and songs for the cinema.
He was born in a village "Puulavaadi" but the appellation "Udumalai" got stuck to his name.
He wrote for many years in cinema and some songs that still reaches your ears from radio stations are:

ellaam inba mayam: ml vasanthakumaari and p leela
innamum paaraa mukam Enammaa, in vElaikkaari.
pazuththa pazam inikkumadi inthap paazum kaayellaam puLikkumadi. siirkaazi govindarajan.
Well, paapanaasam sivan held kaviraayar in high esteem. Respect from equals is rare. Though Annadurai liked him and often engaged him to write songs for his dramas and cinemas, kaviraayar was not an atheist.
