Those who love to crack crossword can try cracking this. It is similar, just words being replaced by numbers. Now that I
m done with it I am posting it here. Good fun :lol2:.
It belongs to early 20th century, so current date may not represent this year. People can also use this to convert units:
a rood = a quarter acre = 1210 sq yds; a mile = 1760 yds;
a pound is 20 shillings.
Enjoy!

16. 15 Across minus 9 Down.
Clues Down:
1. Value of Dogsmead in shillings per acre.
2. Square of Mrs. D's age.
3. Mary's age.
4. Value of Dogsmead in pounds.
6. Age of Dunk's first-born, Ed, who will be twice as old as Mary next year.
7. Square of the number of yds which is the breadth of Dogsmead.
8. Number of minutes Farmer Dunk takes to walk one and a third times round Dogsmead.
9. see 10 Down.
10. 10 Across times 9 Down.
12. Sum of digits in second column plus 1.
13. Length of tenure in years of little P by the Dunks.
In spite of my predilection for crosswords this is frightening. Not just because I am half asleep now!
hehe, it is completely solvable with the given clues alone eventhough there are no direct answers.Quote:

And 15A is a cube but only 2 digits. So it can be either 27 or 64.
16A is (15A - 1) and hence it must either end with 6 or 3. But since 7D is a square and no square number can end with a 3, we can be pretty sure that 15A is 27 :)
Where is TSO and Southie Cook?
No one is attempting this one? Too much time to waste eh? :P Nerd, GP?
I am not able to spend too much time at work these days (at a stretch). I will attempt it on Saturday if its still open. I love crosswords as long as they don't involve vocabulary, word-play, word-twisting etc :lol:Quote:

Explanation:
 Since 8 Across and 11 Across are years, both should start with a 1.
 15 Across ("the walking speed (in miles per hour) of farmer Dunk, to the power of three") can only be 27 (33) or 64 (43). However, if 15 Across would be 64, then 16 Across ("15 Across minus 9 Down") would end on a 3, and 7 Down ("the square of the width (in yards) of Dog's Mead") would also end on a 3, which is impossible. So, 15 Across is 27.
 Since 16 Across equals "15 Across minus 9 Down", 16 Across must be 16 and 9 Down must be 11.
 Since 9 Down equals "10 Down divided by 10 Across", 10 Across must end on a 2.
 8 Down ("the number minutes in which farmer Dunk walks 11/3 times around Dog's Mead") is therefore 12, the number of minutes in which farmer Dunk walks 1 time around Dog's Mead is 9, and since from 15 Across it follows that farmer Dunk walks 3 miles per hour, 14 Across ("the circumference of Dog's Mead (in yards)") is 792.
 12 Down ("the sum of the ciphers of 10 Down plus 1") can now only be 19.
 11 Across ("the year in which Mary was born") must start with 191, and since the current year is 1939, 3 Down ("the age of Mary, the daughter of farmer Dunk") must start with a 2.
 Since 6 Across ("the difference between the length and width of Dog's Mead (in yards)") is at least 10 and at most 99, and the sum of the length and width of Dog's Mead equals 396 (because of 14 Across), the minimum value for the width is 149 and the maximum value is 193. Because of 7 Down ("the square of the width (in yards) of Dog's Mead"), the width must end on a 4 or a 6. Therefore, only eight possible values remain: 154, 156, 164, 166, 174, 176, 184, and 186. Of these values, only 176 has a square that ends on 976. Now we can calculate that the length of Dog's Mead is 220, that 7 Down ("the square of the width (in yards) of Dog's Mead") is 30976, that 1 Across ("the area of Dog's Mead (in square yards)") is 38720, that 6 Across ("the difference between the length and width of Dog's Mead (in yards)") is 44, and that 7 Across ("the number of roods in Dog's Mead multiplied by 8 Down") is 384.
 Since 6 Down ("the current age of Ted, son of farmer Dunk, who will be in 1945 twice as old as his sister Mary will be in that year") is 48, we can calculate that 3 Down ("the age of Mary, the daughter of farmer Dunk") is 21 and that 11 Across ("the year in which Mary was born") is 1918.
 13 Down ("the number of years that Dog's Mead is owned by the Dunk family") can now only be 829, and therefore 8 Across ("the year in which the Dunk family became owner of Dog's Mead") is 1110.
 Because of 9 Down ("10 Down divided by 10 Across") and 12 Down ("the sum of the ciphers of 10 Down plus 1"), 10 Across ("the age of farmer Dunk") can only be 72 and 10 Down ("see 9 Down") can only be 792.
 Since 2 Down ("the square of the age of the mother-in-law of farmer Dunk") is a number of four ciphers, starting with a 7 and ending on a 1, the age of the mother-in-law of farmer Dunk is at least 84 and at most 89. Of these numbers, only 89 has a square that ends on a 1. Therefore, 2 Down is 7921.
 From the description of 1 Down ("the value of Dog's Mead (in shillings per rood)") we can deduce that the price per rood is at least 15 and at most 19 pounds. Since the area of Dog's Mead is 32 roods (see 1 Across), and because of 4 Down ("the value of Dog's Mead (in pounds)"), the price per rood can only be 17 pounds, and we find that 1 Down is 340 and 4 Down is 544.

GP, your dimensions of the farm is correct. That is where I stammered a bit, for that.
But there are some assumptions which I dont find in the original questions, some of them are even contradicting too.. :?
since the current year is 1939,
son of farmer Dunk, who will be in 1945 twice as old as his sister Mary => current year is 1944???
13 Down ("the number of years that Dog's Mead is owned by the Dunk family") can now only be 829
Pls explain :D
