Raaja - comparing 4 decades of musical output

jaiganes நல்ல அவதானிப்பு முக்கியமாக இனி வரும் பத்தாண்டுகளை பற்றிய உங்களின் என்னத்தை நானும் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன். ஏற்கனவே பலமுறை சொல்லியிருந்தாலும் மறுபடியும் சொல்ல தோன்றும் ஒரு விஷயம் ராஜா பிரேம் ரமேஷ் சந்திப்பில் கூறியிருந்தது போல பேரிசை வடிவங்களை நோக்கி அவர் செல்ல வேண்டிய தருணம் இதுவாகும். நிச்சயமாக அவருக்கு மேலை நாடுகளில் ஒரு நல்ல வரவேற்பு இருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். திரை இசையை பொறுத்தவரை அவர் இனிமேல் செய்யக்கூடியது என்று எதுவும் இல்லை நல்ல இசைக்கு வாய்ப்புள்ள படங்களை ஒப்புக்கொண்டு மற்ற வேறு வகையான முயற்சிகளை செய்ய வேண்டிய நேரம். ஷாஜி மேல் எவ்வளவு விமர்சனம் இருந்தாலும் " நம் காலத்தில் உலகிலேயே சிறந்த இசை அமைப்பாளராக வருவதற்கான தகுதி அவரிடம் மட்டுமே இருந்தது" என்ற கூற்று உண்மை... நான் வேறுபாடும் புள்ளி இன்னும் அவருக்கு அந்த திறமையும் தகுதியும் இருக்கிறது ஷாஜியை போல அவரின் கற்பனை வறண்டு விட்டதாகவோ திறமை மறைந்து விட்டதாகவோ நான் எண்ணவில்லை. HE CAN RAISE THE BAR ANYTIME HE WISHES. அதற்கு கடைசி 10 வருடங்களில் வந்த ஒரு சில படங்களின் பாடல்களே சாட்சி!!

Suresh i could not agree with you more. the heart and head approach is explained by himself once. the technical aspect of a bird flying and emotional response it creates which will be missed by you if you are occupied with only the technicality.

Its my opinion that no one in the entire world combined the two aspects of our brain into a creation better than him. you find either its heavy on emotional side or on the technical side polarizing peoples choice. Its a subject matter which requires a detailed analysis.

Of course he never lost emotional aspect you can simply say his voice is the soul in thiruvasagam.

While on the discussion on Raaja of the 2000's, here is something which is strikingly close to my own thoughts on the subject:

Having said all this, I must point out the other side of Raaja's last few years. Show me another composer who can compose a song like Sabhdamayee or Om Enum pranava (classical), Bagyadha Balegara (Folk), Paa or any of the other ones (For urban/ jazz).. or for that matter the old Acoustic Raaja thats still possible to find in songs like Ninnukori (sunny) or Indha Ulagil (Madhu) or umpteen other songs.. As much as we "feel" a perceived drop in quality, we have also failed to notice the kind of songs we want from him. That is, we are expecting unmusical output from him because that has become a norm even before we realized. This is my opinion as also proven by him in that youtube link.

இளையராஜா - கையில் உள்ள திரைப்படைப்பின் ஆழத்தைப்பொருத்து தன் இசை ஆளுமையை மாற்றிக்கொள்கிறார். கையில் நான் கடவுளும் பழசி ராஜாவும் இருந்தால் தன் பரிசோதனைகளையும் கலையுணர்வையும் அவர் கட்டவிழ்க்கத்தவறியதே இல்லை. அதே சமயம், தனி ஒருவனாக அனைத்தையும் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்னும் பாணி இருப்பதால் மேலும் மேலும் இசை வடிவங்களை எழுதிப்பழகித்தான் தன்னைக்கூர்மையாக வைத்திருக்கிறார் என்பது எனக்குக்கூட புலப்படுகிறது.

இசை மேதைகள் கணிதமேதைகளைப்போன்றவர்கள் என்பது எனது கருத்து. 7 ஸ்வரங்கள் மட்டுமே என்று எடுத்துக்கொண்டாலும், அவை சேர்ந்து விலகும் இடங்கள், இவை எண்களும் அவற்றின் கூட்டைப்போல் பல பரிமாணங்களில் விரியக்கூடியதாய் நான் உணர்கிறேன்.

சாதாரண கணிதத்தில் இருந்தே அப்ஸ்ட்ராக்ட் அல்ஜீப்ரா போன்ற அடுத்த கட்ட கணிதம் உதித்ததைப்போல் இசையின் அடுத்த கட்டங்கள் இந்தியாவில் ஏன் உலகத்தில் ஒருவர் மனதில் உருவாகி வெளிவரும் என்று சொன்னால் அது இளையராஜாவிடம் இருந்து தான் என்பது என் எதிர்பார்ப்பு. ஆனால் அதற்குப்பெரும் தடை என்று சொன்னால், அது இசையை நாம் எல்லோரும் அணுகும் முறை தான். அது மாறுமா? வெரும் சப்தங்களின் துல்லியத்தை மட்டுமே முக்கியமாகக்கொள்ளாமல், இசையின் வடிவம் சார்ந்த ரசிப்பு நம்மிடம் அதிகம் நிலை பெற வேண்டும். நம்மில் பெரும்பாலான ரசிகர்கள், இசையை வெரும் ஒரு கைவிசிறியைப்போல கணநேர புழுக்கத்தை விரட்டுவதற்காக பயன்படுத்துகின்றோம். அதை விட்டு இசைக்குரிய மரியாதையை நாம் தந்தால், இசைஞானியை இன்னும் புதிய எல்லைகள் தொட வைக்கலாம்.

ராஜா முயற்சி செய்யும் இசை முடிச்சுகள் எல்லாம் மேற்கண்ட கணிதம் போல மிகவும் எளிமையாக இல்லாமல், மிகவும் கடினமான அமைப்பைக் கொண்டது. ராஜா தனது பாடலில் மிகக் கடினமான முடிச்சை ரொம்ப எளிமையாக அவருக்கே தெரிந்த இசைப் புலமையால் அவிழ்த்துக் காட்டுகிறார். நீங்கள் சொல்வது போல, ராஜாவிற்கு இருக்கும் இசை மீதான ஆழ்ந்த ஈடுபாட்டின் விளைவு தான் நம் முன் சிதறிக் கிடக்கும் ஆயிரக் கணக்கான பாடல்கள், இசை வடிவங்கள்.

ராஜாவின் தற்போதைய இசை முற்றிலுமாக மாறிவிட்டது. கடந்த பத்து வருடத்தில் நாட்டுப்புறத்தை ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்ட மெலடிப் பாடல்கள் என்றால் மிகவும் குறைவு. பழைய ராஜாவை பார்க்க வேண்டும், அப்படி காட்சி அளித்தால், அவரது லட்சக் கணக்கான பட்டி தொட்டி ரசிகர்களுக்கு விருந்தாக அமையும்.

பாரதியின் பாடல் வரிகள் தான் நியாபகத்திற்கு வருகிறது..

Last week I was at a conference featuring the whos who of geology, geochemistry, geophysics and biology

Several of the 60 plus scientists were also connoisseurs of classical music and one fine evening after dinner, while discussing about the arts, I was asked to speak about Indian music and I spoke about IR! One of them, a renowned microbiologist and also a Bach (and baroque music) fan, took keen interest in noting down IR's album names - he requested for a CD and I sent him "How to Name It? Received the CD of the composer Dr. Ilaiyaraaja and listened to the the night received.

Great music and much different than any of the Indian classical music I was exposed to while in India. He does blend some of Bach fugues with some contemporary composers such as Glass and Cage.

I am looking forward to hearing more of his music and learning more about him.

Thanks again for the great CD and for introducing me to this very creative composer.

It was great getting to talk to you and hope we can meet at the at the AbSciCon in April.

I have recommended Nothing But Wind, Tiruvasagam and India 24 Hrs for him giving links to buy them online (one lesson I have learnt - never EVER give youtube or easy/free download links - that will make them form a very very cheap opinion about IR's music - which is something i dont want to happen)

As I have always reiterated, IR's music needs to be taken to the right people in the right manner - there are appreciative listeners everywhere!

The one fact I resonate with is the comparison to mathematics. It is exactly what I feel when I listen to Raja's music, especially the interludes. They are so very precise. Mathematical precision is the word that always comes to my mind when I hear his songs. No unnecessary bits, each bit following the other in perfect order, every bit as complicated as the other but still achieving an overall unity. No bit happens in isolation and is always a part of the grand design.

In 2000s, we did see a bit of relaxation here, especially in the synth based songs in Tamil. A few beats continue without any instruments in the background. Maybe this was the concession he made for the new trend but you can see his heart was probably not in it. Nowadays you can see him also using the jazz style of music as much as the WCM grammar. I had earlier also written about songs in Jaganmohini, Madhiya Chennai and Paa having this 'controlled improvisation' type of interludes. Here the precision is deliberately avoided and the sax or the piano goes about in a more leisurely way, similar to what is generally done in jazz. I would not say this was the trend in 2000s as a whole but became more pronounced last year.

It will be nice to have the views of people like Shank, who are themselves composers. They can tell us some things from a very different perspective. So, out with it Shank. We are waiting for your views.

இன்னும் ஒரு நூற்றாண்டை கடந்து இந்த மாதிரியான அவதூறுகள் அவற்றை பரப்பி ஆனந்தம் கண்டவர்கள் எல்லாம் மறைந்த பின்னாலும் ராஜாவின் இசை நிலைத்து நிற்கும். அதில் கடலவு அன்பும் இந்த மண்ணின் மீதும் மக்களின் மீதும் நாட்டுப்புற இசையின் மீதும் அவர் கொண்டிருந்த காதலும் வெளிபட்டுகொண்டே இருக்கும் . ஜே மோ சொல்வதை போல இசை ரசிகர்கள் காலம் முழுதும் அதை தேடி வந்து கொண்டே இருப்பார்கள். இந்த மண்ணின் ஆத்மாவை தன் இசையால் கண்டடைந்த கலைஞனை நம் சிறுமைகளால் அளவிட கூடாது.

Wonderfully put eagle. The basic thing I want to tell posters like genesis is that whatever Shaji and Charu write is downright unethical for their perceived stature. Whatever genesis says as one or two mistakes are the unethical ones. I am fully OK with someone criticizing Raja. You cannot avoid it once you are in the public sphere but doing it unethically is not acceptable. Saying 'thumbi vaa' is a copy and giving link to a totally unrelated song is absolutely unethical.

Anyway lets put a stop to this aspect in this thread and continue with our discussion on Raja the long lasting musician.

pls check the previous threads and find one post from anyone here that Raaja always says and does the right things? However you can rest assured that I will always defend raaja's music any day and always say that there will be some reason if his music in any film sounds odd - So far I have always found my instinct to defend his music (which needs no defense in my opinion) to be spot on. However none of us have idolised him and considered him to be epitome of ideal person. He is better than many in that aspect and probably there are far better behaved people than him when someone is in a bad mood. There is no denying that. Before launching on a spree on all of us, pls read all the posts before generalising or else you too shall become a (vy)why saar?

genesis: Now coming to you. What is wrong with saying that Shaji has an hidden agenda. I personally feel he has been very unethical in his article. Please try and explain to me why he did these things and then I will probably agree with you that Shaji is a great writer and we defenders of Raja are barbarians with no manners whatsoever. He are my questions:

1. Shaji says that on the web people have been saying that 'thumbi vaa' resembles some 'Istanbul' song. Now, anyone with even a fraction of musical of sense of what Shaji is supposed to possess can make out that these songs have nothing in common. So why was this quoted? If Shaji has not heard the song, is it not unethical to quote it? If he has heard the song and still quoted it, is that not unethical?

2. Shaji says that Raja blamed ONV for Pazhassiraja's music failure. When did that happen? If Shaji is quoting from online magazines, the video of the function is also online. Did Shaji watch it? If he has not, should he not have watched it before making that statement? If he has, isn't what he said unethical?

3. He says that Raja has said Bob Dylan and Bob Marley were garbage. On what is this based on? Is it based on the article that Anand wrote for 'Outlook'. Please go and read that article again. It is not at all clear as to what exactly Anand asked and why Raja replied that he is above that garbage. Anand very cleverly writes it at the end giving you an impression that Raja said Bob Dylan and Bob Marley were garbage. If quoting such an agenda driven article and basing your arguments to bash Raja with that is not agenda driven, then what is?

4. If Shaji did not have an agenda, instead of just praising someone like Bob Dylan sky high, would he not have also compared Bob Dylan's personal life with Raja's personal life? You will be surprised that lives of many of the rock heroes are nowhere near being as angelic as Shaji suggests they are. If Shaji was not driven by agenda, he would dug deep into Bob Dylan's life as well and then he may not have had much to say.

5. How can one instance, of Raja being angry with some young singers be reflection of his whole life? Don't people get angry? Does everyone behave in the most logical way in every situation? If such instances are shown and then extrapolated to give a sense that Raja is always like this, isn't that an agenda?

In short, Shaji's article bases itself on some very unethical grounds, not all sources are clearly revealed, comparisons are not fairly done, infact they are lopsidedly done, the whole article reeks of an agenda and belongs to the realm of yellow journalism.

If you love Shaji so much, please pass on this message: We are more than willing to tolerate any criticism of Raja, personal or musical but let it be done with some ethics, with some decency, let the same yardstick be used for all those who are held up as exemplery people. Then we will surely respect such an article. Till then, Shaji and Charu will be the same.

But I still think Pazhassi Raja's issue highlighted IR's no teamwork attitude. Not only that, he could not even keep it to himself, had to tell it in public.

That exactly is the issue. Many people do not know about the other issues and may take what Shaji has written to be completely true. Hence, someone like Shaji, who has a decent following needs to be true. Else those who are nuetral may think that what Shaji is right and those who know otherwise, like Charu say, will use Shaji's post in their agenda against Raja. As I said, as a reader, whoever be our idol, if such posts appear we must reject it. Only then will we be taken seriously. As long as people clap and rejoice at such posts because it coincides with their views, the writer will become bolder. Not a good thing for a civilized debate or for an assessment of an artist. The least we can do to an artist whom we enjoy so much is to be true and not unethical in our criticism.

Here again is a one sided take on the affair. Assuming what you say is right, you must also state that Raja later issued an apology, in which he has also mentioned that he has great respect for ONV and considers himself quite small in front of ONV, and he didn't mean to hurt ONV or something to that effect. This was published in Malayalam Manorama it seems. (Unfortunately I don't have the link but our archives do have that link)

If you see the incident in totality you will be surprised that someone of Raja's stature is apologizing !! According to everything that everyone says, Raja is the most bullish, thick headed, egoistic person. How come he is apologizing to ONV? When the incident is told completely it paints a different picture of Raja altogether. People like Shaji conviniently take the first part and leave out the second part. All I am saying is that give the full picture and then your criticism. We don't need to build a temple but you don't need to throw stones either just because it pleases you to think somone is guilty.

All i heard so far is this song sung by renowned Indian Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty and he praised the composition also its based on some difficult raaga (you need to clarify) and first time when charuhaasan heard the song he was so moved that he was in tears. Now Mr.Ranagrajan nambi has some issues with it... may be his standard is so high that poor raaja wont be able to match it.. what a tragedy :(

While there is no doubt on IR's WCM prowess, yes, he is our Baach.

However, HM even now he can explore . Something unchartered . His scores on HM till date is nothing admirable , noteworthy.

Good thought. When we talk of renouned composers of HM, you can say, Naushad Ali, OP.Nayyar, SDB come to my mind immediately. There are many giants.
Listen to those compos and compare with our Ir. You will realise where he is lacking :idea:
