I do not know when Shanthi will ever be able to teach me Tamil again nor do I know why I am waiting for her before starting my Tamil learning again. I think it is better I will start without her.
I would try the above sentences in tamizh.
Shaanthi enakku munbu pol tamizh payitruvikka mudiyumaa endro, allathu naan En tamizh katru koLLa shaanthikaaga (avaLukaanga, avarukaaga) kaathirukkirEn endro theriyavillai. AvargaL ilaamalE naan thodanvugathE nallathu ena ninaikkiREn.

naan shaanthiyai ilaamal thOdunguvEn enRu ninaikkiREn. :) naan munnamE podhumaana thamizh puriyagiREn. aadhalaal, naanE thamizh katRukoLvEn.
This is lightly different from the english sentence u posted above.
LEmme try to change this.
naan Shaanthi illaamal thodanguvEn endru ninaikkirEn.
naan munbE pothumaana tamizh payindrirukkiRen(ive learnt).
aathalaal, naanE tamizh katrukoLVEn.

I think, I would start without shanthi. Ive learnt quite a bit (or enough) tamizh before. Hence I would learn tamizh myself.
