Thanks V_S for the Ragamalika links and Suresh for more info. Manivannan did give quite a few insights, hope he talks about Nooravathu Naal which had fantastic BGM and songs. That's my favorite Manivannan movie.
Listening to Uyire Uravil Kalandhe from Mella Pesungal sung by SJ - http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.ph...R00364&lang=en
An amazing tune wonderfully rendered by SJ. Expert hubbers could post more and convey their thoughts. I feel the tune as special in someway that I cannot define. BTW, this album has some beautiful songs like Sevvanthi Pookalil, Kelaadho.
Thanks Rajkumarc, Mella pesungal is an excellent pick. I still remember I got introduced to this film and songs in 1985, when one of my friend's Anna brought this casette. He was a great fan of IR at that time itself. The first song we listened was Kaathal Saagaathu'. At that time, he used to explain us the nuances of this song especially the guitar usage, but as usual, I didn't get anything, but just we nodded and enjoyed the song. But now looking back, I should thank him, atleast now I can get something what he was conveying. Those were the times, when I slowly got hold off Maestro, after I never went back.Quote:

Trip down memory/melody lane! One of earlier gems of Maestro. Sweet song by PS and MV. Excellent guitar work!
Tune for die for! How sweet when PS says Vaa Vaa Vaa.
PS sings this song mostly, except very few lines in second charanam sung by MV.
Eventhough MV only takes over in the second charanam, when he sings this line, "adiye neeye enthan kannin mugavari" all PS has been singing in this song has been done just in this one line by MV. Not to underestimate the legend PS, but the feel MV has given in that just one line, I could not control my tears. So much emotion he brought in that just one line. Not sure if Maestro has given him special instruction about this line, but he has sung with whole heart.
Great composition and singing!
There is another great song "Pon Vaana Poogavil' sung by K J Yesudas and S P Shailaja voices sounding very fresh, with Gangai Amaran's humming.
Quote:

Only very recently heard and am hearing "oorrorama aathu pakkam" from 'Idhaya Kovil'. To be honest I have heard the other songs in this movie (but of course!!) but never heard this song. Got to know of this only recently and stunned by this number. What a lovely number. Love the way Raja sings this song. So very modern and rock and rollish but yet so very typical Raja. As usual the instrumentalists are having a gala time. Did this song appear in the movie?

Suresh,
Yes, Suresh....the song did appear in the movie and featured Kapil Dev singing those lines. No, it's not the cricketer...it's a North Indian import who had the same name. I also love the vocal harmonies in that song...amazing pep.
Pandathe Naattinpuram - Malayalam gem in sir's own voice
:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
after a long gap listened to naan vazha vaippen album.
Two songs really got to me with contrasting emotions and styles.
1. Aagayam mele paadhaaLam keezhe KJY singing with gay abandon and the fusion of goan christian music and our local flavour is a delight.
2. Endhan pon vanname - amazing song by TMS. he breathes his majesty and soul into the tune by Raaja. The interludes are worth their notes in gold and diamond. I was wishing for a WCM counterpoint in the song, but did not hear any. To my surprise, Sarod and veenai played the same note in the 3rd interlude to create a heavenly effect.
And yes - these songs from 79 had three charanams and I was blessed with three heavenly interludes from master.
lyrics were cracker too...
in the KJY rowdy song..
"nirkaamal suzhalum bhoomi idhu
Ellaarum nadikkum medai idhu
Poatten naanum veshangaLai
Katren Vaazhkai paadangaLai"
agayam melae - Head phone la kaekanam.
Guitar in Sweetness ai feel panna mudiyum.....
Beats - Ethanai varieties...................
Thanks for the pick Jaiganes........
Paarthale Theriyaatha... What a rich composition
I don't understand Tamil, but my ears always have a serious craving for Carnatic raagam sangeetham and Ananda Bharavi is one raag that never ceases to satisfy my emotions.
Early ARR hits were predominantly Anandha bhairavi. It is a very pleasing raaga..Quote:

Listening to the song in ear phones can cause you loose grip over surroundings. The stereophonic arrangement is delectable and pure jazz and blues delight. Beyond the coolness of the genre, Raaja adds delicate instrumental layers that accompany the landing of every sandham - so lyrically, every instrumentation layer complements the words in a collaborative fashion - as if saying "yes" or "punctuating the flow of lyrics. This is one of Raaja signature, not letting the lyrics be mouthed by the singer without any accompaniment, but rather creating a never ending conversation between words and music.
Awesome awesome song. This is my Raja song discovery of the year.

One of the main reasons why I cannot get enough of Maestro's pieces is his use of the violin and all the ways in which he creates sheer magic with its music. So thank you so very much for this link!! :notworthy:Quote:

Thanks Querida! This is one of my dearest song of Meastro and it's very close to my heart. Recently I showed this song to one of my colleague (Canadian), he was bowled over by the song and the video!. He said, he never heard such a song in his life and should be a very difficult song to compose (we know how long it should have taken for Maestro to compose). He was listening to this song when I went back to him after an hour or so. :notworthy: This time I was bowled over. I felt very proud!!Quote:

Jai,
"Chinna chinna muththu neerile" is a lovely find. Never heard this earlier. Thanks to you, started the New Year listening to this song. Wonderfully done by Jesudas and Janaki.
Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2011. For us to become more prosperous, we need Raja to give music to more movies. Lets hope he does it this year and make us all richer.
How to name it, Nothing But wind,
