I felt so when watching the crucial Karnan-Kunthi meeting scene today and he rebuffs her request to leave Duryodhanan. The unfairness and audacity of her request is met with respect, righteous resolve and emotional explanation. It is not something that can be put into words at all. Magnificence.

The film has several scenes that hinge on close-ups working. Totally on Sivaji's shoulders to captivate the audience and elevate the moment. And he does it as only he can. Tour-de-force 'mbAingaLE.

Absolutely ..Everyone of us can feel that ..But not able to explain in words ..You did nicely .. While watching , for few close up expressions ,I stopped concentrating on screen and thinking how this can be done ..at those moments I felt that calling him one of world's best is not just for the reason he belongs to us ..It is a truth and we are blessed .

Good point about the politics/aesthetics of Parasakthi and Andha NaaL.

The college debate is well done.When Rajan declares he is going to swing the audience, you sense the condescension. But then when he speaks you are yourself put in two minds. In the end PandariBai comes across as emotional and unidimensional. Imagine doing this in 1954 when the Congress was still riding the 'naattukku sudhandhiram vaangi kuduththa katchi' tag, imagininably to the extent that it would have been sacrilegious, nay ungrateful(!), to think of alternative viewpoints.

However, by the same token, I guess it can be said that, to some extent, that an unfeeling, clinical, modern Rajan could also be seen as a villainization of where India was headed.

but more than NT, i was much impressed by the direction and screenplay which left no clue but still kept it engaging...

after this i watched 12 angry men with a similar crime investigation, which actually came in 57 and was wondering our film was even better than this...
b/w movies have a charm... still in the hunt for such crime investigation/courtroom dramas...

after watching Karnan, friends and I were having a discussion on who would do at least a worthy repeat of Karnan role.... there is absolutely no one! :shock:
no one single current actor has the gambeeram and larger-than-life feel required for the role. this speaks greatly of NT and in my opinion, the ONLY actor who can claim to do roles NO ONE else can do...

duryodhanan, banu, subhangi and kunti roles can be done by many current day actors.. other than karnan, only krishna's role will be difficult...

"Master" Sridhar acts as Meghanathan, a young orphan, who after being accused of setting fire to a school, runs to Karnan seeking justice. He was six years old :shock: at the time of filming, and finished his "long scene in one take", for which he was paid a remuneration of Rs1,000.

"I’ve been extremely blessed to act with such a storehouse of talent. As I delivered my dialogue, Sivaji Ganesan was so moved that tears rolled down his cheeks. This Sivaji-Devika film is a very good one and many times watched .
Sivaji action as professor and Devika action as student is really thriliing.
Especally scenes like, Devika as student in the beginning, her superb performance while drenching in the rain with sivaji
visiting Professor sivaji house and joining 'krishna and Radai " idol there with love emotions,
are all Devika 's good performances.
She was really beauty and good pair for Sivaji Ganesan.

Seeing a big post by Plum and suspecting there'll be spoilers, I skipped the posts and decided to watch the movie before reading it:-)

And I watched the movie, for the first time...the only thing I knew before was that Sivaji acted as a villain - knew nothing else about it. It didn't take away much of the thrill anyways...

Now, I can enjoy Plum's interesting posts :-)

More than the denial of rebuff request Scene of Karnan-Kunthi Meeting, you should watch Where the Camera Starts and ends....You can see, Nadigar Thilagam facing the center point and slowly turn while expressing the dialogue and would complete the total circle or oval, the camera moves. He would have done it so professionally and with so much ease. We cannot expect, this type of perfection from any other actor in this universe other than our Nadigar Thilagam.

Can we say the below dialogue reflects the intensity of the situation and the nature of the character.

" Mayil, naan virumburadhu unnoda andha 16 vayasa..". A perfect dialogue that at once nails down Mayil's infatuation, her desire, her innocence & at the same time declares the doctor's lust ?

It's generally said this film is heavility inspired from our Hollywood classics, especially Citizen Kane. And How is it better than 12 Angry Men? Please explain in 100-200 words. Not more.

Acting is much more precise. It also felt like the directors then knew when to use close ups. Close and medium shots is more the norm today. The yesteryear directors despite the confines of the studio do not do such elementary mistakes, looks like the current filmmakers are like our Engineering students, mugging up rough text by marker highlights and fugly underlines.

And this Sivaji monopolizes the frame like no other Indian actor in my experience. Thank thee KG for the huge list. The only good thing he has done in his life.

the films are similar in their genre but other than that they are very different like one goes around 'he did/he didn't' and another was like 'who did it'...
both are remarkable movies, but the reason personally i felt good about our movie was the reason that 1) i did not expect such a movie back then from our industry 2) it goes through many people and the story gave an idea on every single person and goes on to establish their characters with a particular scene(like plum said, establishin the characters of the detective and the inspector, and so on for everyone by shuttling back and forth to the flashbacks and the present) and yet keep focussing on the crime investigation...

ok 142 words now... and i was not trying to belittle the other movie which was brilliant as well, where the director restricts the complete story within a closed room and still kept the audience engaged by smart dialogues... but here i was rooting for the accused from the beginning whereas in our movie i was not able to..

Both films aren't about 'who?' / 'did he or did he not', it concerns more about the 'how'. The angles of murder routine might have been derived, but the film is entirely authentic with self-contained plot, theme and characters.

I owe a revisit to AN because I had slightly forgotten it.

I couldn't revisit '12 AM' (maybe if I did, only to see the key portions for Henry Fonda vs LJ Cobb and to learn how to shoot s-rs routine). And you tend to appreciate it more when you see the TV version with Jack Lemmon (who is good though).

Dear Murali Sir. I share the happiness with you. However, we have our inherent fear that Thiruvilayadal should outdo Karnan's records as this movie has been remaining an auspicious movie for any new theatre opening ceremony, till today. Though mythological, the movie was also an entertainier with soul stirring songs from KBS, TMS, BMK and TRM. Digital enhancement certainly will add value to this movie making it worth to see again and again, like the timeless classic Karnan. My humble suggestion is that the shark scene in this movie needs to be graphically corrected and the Savithri song in the fisherman episode needs to be cut to sustain the viewer's interest. The songs 'Isaiththamizh nee seidha arunchadanai', Orunaal poduma and Pattum Naane are haunting alongside the unforgettable rendition by KBS. The song Paarthal Pasumaram is worth mentioning for the dancing style of NT to the tune with rhythm. Like Karnan we expect Sivaperuman too get epitomized by the scaling heights of NT in the minds of younger generation too. Tharumi episode and Balaiah's scenes are still scene stealers!

great news.but why are they in such a hurry?I think they have to plan meticulously as they did for karnan like creating a hype with paper ads,releasing the trailer in the presence of celebrities and so on.'If 'kumki' will also be scheduled for the same month the fans cannot make big arrangements for both the movies due to time and money constraint.IMO thiruvilaiyadal should also be released in march like karnan please discuss the matter with the concerned people.
