I think wherever he decides it will be a 'fun' song based on synth, he doesn't use the normal bass but the synth bass, which is not very prominent. In other melodies he has started using the bass. Let's hope this year we will have more 'back to 'bass'ics music' :DQuote:

most of the experiences are common to almost every raja fan, i think. but i could not avoid a surprise when someone (punnaimaran, i think) mentioned bambaram and koligundu.
i will quote my post some one year back in orkut.

your first experience of raja's music.
hi all,
raja's music has had a tremendous effect on everyone of our lives. most of us remember the first time we encountered this phenomenon in our sojourn called life. please share that experience with all the members of this community.
eventhough if some people do not remember the exact first experience, there will definitely be an instant in their life which wud have made them think 'what a music this man can create!!'. please share that too.
i start with mine.
i was born in 1974. ilayaraja scored his first movie in 1976. those days there was no tv. radio was the only entertainment. all india radio, madras station and vividhbharathi were the source of music, madras station for classical music, news and other programs sponsored by govt funds. vividhbharathi provided commercial broadcasting. the announcement itself wud be 'vividha bharathiyin varthaga oliparappu'.
all the homes in our street invariably had a radio set. there was a time in 50's immediately after independence when u shud have a licence for radio. u shud renew it every year. thank god we had the 'luxury' of listening to radio free of cost. at least u can hear 4,5 radio sets playing giving u a surround sound effect if u come out on the street. 'ungal virupam', 'thirai ganam' were all time favourites of an entire generation.
it was in 1980, i think. i was a 6 year old boy. those days there will be seasons for games like, goli, kaathadi(kites), bambaram (top) etc.
i dont know till date how the season will begin. when going to school in the morning i will see a loner with a kite or top. coming back from school, the entire street will be busy in flying kites or playing with tops!!.
one sunday morning, i was very busy with my bambaram. there were 3 primary types of playing bambaram. kuthu, savuku and saadha. 'kuthu' needs a lot of concentration so as to perfectly land the top on the head of another top and break it.
still i remember that moment, when i lifted my hand with the top, a great musical wave overpowered me. it was the prelude of 'madai thirandhu' from the movie nizhalgal.
the entire song i was with the top in my hands unable to release it, my mind being engaged somewhere else. none of my friends complained, probably they were also immersed in the same wave. that was the first time i listened to a song in my life. i might have heard so many songs before, i dont remember. but this one is etched in my memory, meaning that this was the song i first listened to and not merely heard.
ninaivu therindha naal mudhal, i have listened to his music and it had a great impact on me and my musical understanding.//
Welcome Narayanan to the thread. Nice post and nice writeup about the 'bambaram' as well :) Happy that you have deleted the invisible Narayanan and have become visible :D Do share more of your experiences.Quote:

hear this bit, can anyone attribute this music to any timeframe? 80s. 90s. or 70s. i dont think so. it is timeless. maybe it is flamenco style. but the same can be played by a 20 piece orchestra to sound like dvorak or tchaikovsky.
people who know music will accept what i say. the same set of notes can be played as a folk tune or a carnatic tune or an hindustani or a western or a omaticaya tribal tune.
only the style changes, but the core, the melody is the same for any kind of music. so, for a genuine composer it is not a problem to just change the style. there may be any no. of reasons for not doing so.
as far as i am concerned raja's music quality has been the same whenever it has come. please dont think i am talking about valmiki or madhiya chennai. raja maybe doing these films for reasons better known to him.
being raja fans, we know what is raja kind of music. let me quote an example. kadal meengal came in 80-81 and kalapani came in 1996. but when i hear 'thaalatudhe vaanam' and 'alolan kili thoppile' i hear the same raja. and when i hear 'hichki hichki' in 2010 i hear the same raja of 'thiruvonam thirunalum vandhallo' of mid 90s.
there are only 2 types of music, good and bad. and raja's music has been good 90 out of 100 times. good music is timeless. that's why madai thirandhu can just like that sit comfily in a hiphop style yogib number.
regarding hindustani compositions, raja has given at least 20 songs in pahadi alone. (idhu 'pagadi' madhiri edhavadhu brokerage-anu kekkaravangala onnum panna mudiadhu).even if it is not to be, what is the point?
dikshitar has not composed in karaharapriya. does it make him any lesser? music comes out of inspiration. there is no music without inspiration. (that maybe one reason for raja not coming out with his best nowadays.) so, if dikshitar was not inspired to create something in karaharapriya, it is destined to be so, thats all.
and as revealed by raja himself, only for his first 25-30 films he planned his music. after that he has given only what has occured to him at that point of time.
raja concentrates on the musical idioms and not on the acoustic excellence. the same excellent acoustics may become redundant in 20 years. but not core music.
forgive me for my incoherent post.
thanks usha and suresh.
Its like a frozen shot in cinema... i like to visualize the scene...it gives me a great pleasure in doing that...Quote:

Its in the interludes... the way he used to convey the emotions using the music... the hope he gave me... i used to stop at the places where this song was played as i had no other means to listen to it...
Are you saying that IR songs from 70 and 80 are of the lowest grade?Quote:
