Another top of mind recall of such suicidal act comes in Rakkayi Kovil. Though the movie is famous for the lottery ticket scene, I love the scene where customers are lined up at eri-karai for annan to style their hair. In spite of being poor and unable to buy even a maadu, he will not cut hair for single customer by giving some lame excuse or other, which doesn't augur well to improve his condition.

Finally when a guy with Bob Marley kind of hairstyle with kondai on top get his turn, GM is taken aback by his looks and comments 'manusaala kootnu vaadaanna moongil podharaa kootnu vandhiukke'... what an imagination. :-) :-)

Another movie where he explicitly states that he is acting contrary to his own self interest is when as a vettiyaan he refuses to do burial of ON's body because he doesn't like the looks. He states, dei naan dubai poganum...irundhaalum..
