a visual and aural treat From Meera
In 1945, American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan contributed to the creation of what soon was hailed as an Indian film classic, a splendid musical and, now, a collector’s item. That was Meera featuring the inimitable M. S. Subbulakshmi in the title role. Made in Tamil and later in Hindi, Meera generated a cult following and remains a favourite with many even today.
It was a Chandraprabha Cinetone film produced by MS’s husband, T. Sadasivam, and directed by Dungan. S. V. Venkataraman, a highly talented composer, was largely responsible for the soul-filling music in the film. Almost every song in Meera, is a gem, and “Kaatriniley Varum Geetham...”, penned by ‘Kalki’ and rendered by MS, stood out for its melody and the lilt in the singer’s voice. Dungan and his chief cinematographer Jiten Bannerjee gave the their best to make Meera a black-and-white marvel. Especially the close-ups of MS who appears divinely beautiful. Dungan made a mould of her face, and along with Bannerjee took several shots in varying angles, lighting patterns and frame sizes. Later, the two would project those test bits of film on a screen over and over again, and study each shot. That’s how the best way to project MS on the film was decided and executed. No wonder, she looks enchanting in this vintage movie.
Dungan shot the indoor part in Newtone Studio and went all the way to Rajasthan for the outdoor shoot to impart realism to Meera. There were some problems getting permission to shoot but Dungan solved them all by the sheer impact of his personality coupled with the fact that he was an American. The British were ruling India and that helped. Besides, Dungan knew most of the ‘burra sahibs’ in the Delhi corridors of power and most doors opened to him even without knocking.
Sequences were also shot in Dwaraka, Lord Krishna’s native town, which Meera visited in quest of her chosen god.
(These outdoor sequences while enriching the film with their pictorial beauty and historic authenticity also jar in a way for one could see electric lamp posts in the streets, a sheer anachronism in a historical film.)
V. Nagaiah played the Rajput king, Meera’s husband, while other major roles were enacted by popular performers T. S. Balaiah, Serukalathur Sama, K. R. Chellam and MGR in a minor role. Lord Krishna was Kamala the iconic Bharatanatyam dancer, then ‘Baby’ Kamala.
Later, when the Hindi version of Meera was released, MS’s fame spread all over the land and beyond, and many foreign and Indian dignitaries, and rulers of the country saw the film. It has an on-screen introduction by Sarojini Naidu.
Meera, its music, visual beauty and, above all, MS, continue to charm even after sixty-plus years – that’s what makes it a classic
