Vaalu Movie Review - An Entertainer that rides high on Simbu-Santhanam- http://www.indiaglitz.com/
Tamil Cinema has seen a handful of delayed releases, coming down with huge expectations, so one might argue 'Vaalu' is just another such movie, but the fans of Simbu would beg to differ, as it's just not the movie that was delayed owing to various reasons, but Simbu has been missing for almost 3 years on the field and so 'Vaalu' indeed is special. The trailers and promotion looked to serve the audience with the rightful ingredients of Romance, action and comedy, Vaalu dwells majorly on these elements to serve a clean entertainer without much fuss. With Simbu, Santhanam, Hansika and VTV Ganesh in the cast, debutante Vijay Chander has carved out a simple commercial flick straight to the point.
The Movie:
It's a known, obvious fact that Simbu is a die-hard fan of Thala Ajith and most of his movies feature Thala worship, but Vaalu is more than that, the hero's ringtone, his dialogue delivery, intro, the BGM rains around Ajith's movies, more like multiple advertisements inserted in a single movie. Simbu is nick named as 'sharp' in his colony for his quick witted attitude, but never once we see the justice behind that, as in so many romcom flicks, he is the jobless jolly go guy falling head over heels for the bubbliest girl in the vicinity. Would not be an exaggeration to call Hansika, as the actress's appearance has changed over the last three years. 'Vaalu' does not try hard to entertain, does not have those ooh and wow moments, the director has put forward a simple storyline that comprises sentiments, love, hero buildup and fair enough comic elements to keep you entertained. Through the first half Simbu trots around Hansika, the luck favoring the hero to meet his love more than just once and so with the help of his loyal sidekicks Santhanam and VTV Ganesh does the hero get to win his love? And just when you see the plot getting interesting, comes a twist in the form of Kannada actor Aditya who plays the villain role Anbu who is also the fiancee of the heroine.
The plot is quite predictable, chugs along with the mix of comedy and Simbu's screen presence. How Simbu wins the heart of Hansika amidst obstacles and goons forms the crux of the plot.
The good stuff:
The movie is a treat for Simbu fans, the actor's comic timing, those hero build up sequences, and versatility is intact and is indeed enjoyable to see the man back on screen. When it comes to love and the punch dialogues surrounding them, Simbu has always driven the front seat and does it pretty remarkably. Santhanam does a commendable job as the hero's friend, a role familiar a few years back until the talented actor went solo, and his onscreen timing with Simbu has always won rave reviews and he does it easily with help from VTV Ganesh. Hansika is as cute she used to be, looks dead drop gorgeous frame by frame. The BGM for hero worship, introduction are straight to the point servers what is intended except that at critical portions the music director has chosen to adopt Superstar's, Ajith'' and other superhit movies' The director has done a pretty neat job entertaining wise, a neat commercial flick with few family sentiments and romance in the air aided by dialogues that suits the hero spot on.
The bad stuff:
The movie is no classic and does not get ambitious to become larger than life phenomenon, apart from being a simple entertainer. A commercial movie gets upped by strong screenplay that continues to make the film engaging, 'Vaalu' lacks the very fact to become a bigger movie. Apart from Simbu's screen presence and timely jokes with Santhanam it sadly falls into the category of an average commercial entertainer lacking the punch factor.
Verdict:Watch it for the lead pair Simbu and Hansika ably supported by Santhanam
Rating :2.5/5
VAALU MOVIE REVIEW- http://www.behindwoods.com/
The much-delayed Vaalu finally hits the screens today, after being in the making for the past couple of years. With quite a star-studded cast in the form of Simbu, Hansika and Santhanam, Vaalu makes no big bones about delivering anything different or epic. It is a quintessential commercial film about the hero, his beautiful girl, his sidekick friends and his loving family.
Despite the 'deja vu' factor and the shallow story, Vaalu is watchable for the sharp dialogues sprinkled across, by director - writer Vijay Chander. The famed Simbu - Santhanam chemistry works to the movie's favor with generous doses of enjoyable comedy. The presence of VTV Ganesh as Kutti Paiya also brings about a chuckle now and then.
As the film has been in the making for quite some time, the change in looks of the actors, Santhanam and Hansika particularly, is clearly evident.
The actors aren't required to exert much, given the easy nature of the film. Simbu (as Sharp) is dynamic in every scene and his screen presence and youthful energy power Vaalu ahead, along with Santhanam's typical sarcasm and counters. Naren as Simbu's dad is getting comfortable in this space of father roles, and there are some good father-son sentimental moments. Kannada actor Aditya gets a solid little role and his character's ruthless nature and strong ethics are impressive
When it comes to a mainstream mass film like this, the BGM score plays a key role in lifting the heroic 'build-up' moments. The Vaalu rap is one such impressive bit while Thaman also does use bits from other popular films' scores like for example, the famous Mannan bit for some of the Simbu - Santhanam comedy scenes.
Coming to the songs, though their placement is highly unimaginative and predictable, Thaarumaaru, You are my Darling and Love Endravan stand out. The tribute to MGR, Rajini and Ajith in the Thaarumaaru number is a definite highlight, with Simbu looking authentic particularly as 'Enga Veettu Pillai' MGR. The set work for this song is also good, with the appropriate backdrops and props employed for the song's different segments. DoP Shakthi has handled this commercial film with the required grandeur, and the scenes which happen near the railway lines stand out.
Vaalu's intro scene ought to be another popular one, with the references to the popular current-day superstars. And as expected, being a Simbu film, there is a fair share of 'Ajithism' in Vaalu.
The film is on the longer side, at more than 2 hours 30 mins, and the elaborate fight sequence towards the end definitely needs some chopping. The stunt choreography, in general, is over-the-top.
To sum up Vaalu, it is nothing new but provides some jolly good moments in a 'tried and tested' template.
Verdict: A watchable commercial film driven by the Simbu - Santhanam duo

'Vaalu' Review: Watch it for Simbu! http://www.dnaindia.com/
What's it about:
After a wait of three years, the audience finally gets to see a Simbu film. Vaalu was supposed to release in 2012 and has finally arrived in 2015.
The film opens with an exciting sequence of a group of youngsters wearing the face masks of popular actors. On one bike, you find two men donning the masks of Ajith and Vijay who turn out to be good friends Simbu and Santhanam. Sharp (Simbu), who has failed his 12th standard, wiles away his time roaming around with Santhanam and Kutti Paiyya (VTV Ganesh), while his dad sets up job interviews for him. One day, he catches a glimpse of Priya Mahalakshmi (Hansika) on a bus with her pet rabbit and falls in love with her. He pursues her and then finds out she is engaged to her mama’s son (Aditya) when he tells her he loves her. Despite this, Sharp pursues her and eventually gets into trouble with Aditya as he turns out to be thug in the city. How he gets himself out of this and ends up winning Hansika forms the rest of the story.
What’sHOThttp://cdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items...rrow-10x10.png:
Despite the fact that Simbu had to wait three years for the release of Vaalu, the visuals in the film don’t look outdated. The presentation is quite contemporary and the locales in some of the songs are quite beautiful. As an actor, Simbu has performed his role well – effortlessly in fact – and the movie really revolves around him. Vaalu shows off Simbu’s comic timing, his ability to carry out action sequences and dancing and singing abilities as well. Most importantly, the role portrays Simbu in what he’s best known for – as a romantic hero.
Hansika also has tremendous footage in the film and essays her role quite well. There are fleeting moments through the film when Sharp and Santhanam’s banter and punch lines elicit a laugh from the audience. And being a Thala Ajith fan, Simbu has made maximum use of this in the film which the audience obviously loves.
What’s Not:
One of the main issues with Vaalu is its storyline which is as clichéd as it can get. Director Vijay Chander hasn’t offered anything new to the audience in terms of script and what he has offered is quite weak. This is one of the big let-downs in this film. Sharp is an idle guy and his parents hardly seem to be care that he has no career but are more interested in getting him married off. Simbu’s characterisation is also not strong – he’s made to act in a casual manner throughout the film, so much so that it doesn’t leave any strong impact on the audience.
It’s obvious that Santhanam and VTV Ganesh are there to just provide comic relief but some of their scenes seem a little disconnected with the whole film and frankly, unnecessary. For instance, the scene where Kutti Paiyya asks Santhanam for his help as his neighbour is eve-teasing his wife. It really doesn’t add much to the film.
As far as the soundtrack of the film goes, ‘You’re my darling’ and ‘Thaarumaaru’ are two good catchy numbers that really lift the film. Simbu has sung ‘You’re my darling’ and it’s been choreographed quite well like ‘Thaarumaaru’, another big boost to the film. But the other songs by music director Thaman aren’t numbers you’d really remember once you walk out of the theatre.
What to do:
Considering it’s Simbu’s first film release in three years, those who want to see if he still has his dashing on-screen charisma should watch the film. And Vaalu proves that he does.
