Parade of the Mice
There lived a Mouse in the gutter under the street upon which the Horse did his parade. People gathered along the pavement to witness the majestic show of the Horse, while the Mouse watched the spectacle by pulling out its head from the gutter grill guard. The Mouse toiled hard to find ways to become like the Horse. Slowly but steadily the Mouse picked a carrier by singing laurels about the Horse. Sooner than the Mouse expected, several mice gathered around the Mouse and cheered along with it. The Mouse knew that it needed a greater push if it has to come out of its hole and become a champion just like the Horse.
Like every year, the leader of the society announced the festive event - a race. And the winner shall be the 'Pride of the Nation'. The Horse was honored every year, as more than its speed, the charisma it carried along extended its respect among the people.
The previous evening, the mice gathered around the Mouse and raised false confidence persuading the Mouse participates in the event that year:
"Just believe in yourself." "Don’t fear to be wrong." "You are brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous." "Doubt Kills. Dream wins." "There is none better than you". "The horse is old and no match for you."
The Mouse went into a deeper thought and with all respect for the Horse, it went to meet him.
"I am not sure if I am thinking or I am confused", confessed the Mouse, "All that I touch turns to stone. Now, my tiny community is biding me against you."
The Horse smiled at the Mouse. "Nothing is on purpose; as a stone can be turned into a beautiful statue", spoke the Horse, "Tomorrow you shall ride on me; well hidden inside my mane; and at the finish line you shall jump to victory."
The Mouse won. The Pride spun the minds of the mice. They raised slogans against the Horse. They shouted in groups stating that the Horse does not have the right to parade anymore and announced that the Mouse owned the famous street.
'From the gutter to the street', the thought of victory engulfed the Mouse that it fell silent as though enjoying the accusations made by the mice at the Horse. The new emotion called Pride completely blinded the past and projected itself as a bright future before the Mouse.
The Horse calmly watched the Mouse. It smiled and slowly walked away.
"They shall be crushed under our hoof that will remind the Head of the Mice his rightful place", growled a stallion.
"They sicken of the calm who know the storm", the Horse advised his followers to let the mice be.
Thus, the Parade of the Mice spread along the street. They were too many in number shouting out crazily. The people were suffocated by the absence of the Horse.
Suddenly a storm attacked with heavy rains, and flood conquered the land. Birds flew away. Large animals crossed the river. The ones who knew to swim swam across. Only the mice were left behind.
None came to aid the mice and the ones who reached the other side safely shouted at the Mouse, "The water only comes up to the knee."
"To you it is an ant, but to me it is a dragon", the Mouse shouted back, "There are great differences between one knee and another. If the water only reaches your knee, it passes a hundred cubits over my head."
The flood ran like a madman swallowing the mice one by one, when the scared group heard a vibrant neigh.
"Listen", the mice heard a compassionate voice, "Jump up and sit on my back. This passage has been entrusted to me; I would take across hundreds of thousands like you", assured the Devine Horse.

Ruler of the Shadow
The Warden climbed the steps of corpses. The human faced demon birds circled behind him blowing off the candle lights.
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachmen...1&d=1546282019
Darkness followed the Warden who gripped a handmade 8-chambered long barrel wheel gun in his hands. Smoke dispersed from the candle wick and joined the lazy smoke dancing around the revolver barrels. The warden reached the top and the demon birds stopped him at the entrance of a huge metal gate on which faces of lost souls were crying in agony. The Guardians of the Gate laughed at the Warden. Evil echoed around the hell hole.
Demon Birds: You are surrounded by our Prince of Darkness, the Ruler of your Shadow. What shall happen to YOU!
The Warden lifted his wheel guns to his sides. He flicked the revolvers outwards to flip open the cylinder. Empty cartridges fell to the ground producing sparks as they kissed the stone floor. He thrusted both the empty guns down faster to his hip towards the bullet case attached to his belt. Once the cylinders were reloaded with sharps, he flipped inwards to lock and load the wheel gun.
The Warden: When Bullets Fly, YOU die!

Petta : A Touch of Excellence
'The arrival of Kaali' is shot similar to the opening sequence from Hateful Eight, just that Quentin Tarantino projects the squence for about 4 minutes, while Karthik turns it off in a blink.
Petta : Angel + Truck + Mist <=> Hateful Eight : Chirst on the Cross + Stagecoach + Snow

How many doors did Rajini open in the movie Petta ?
I don't have the answer for that at this moment (I am watching a show in a couple of hours, as yesterday I lost the count half way through, thanks to the awesome distractions Karthik has sprinkled throughout the film). 'Opening and closing door' is a symbolic representation of 'transition', which I would be discussing about sometime later. In one of my works, I had designed a Palace floor with doors like a maze. Opening and closing them transforms the interrior as well. The characters walk between phases while entering rooms and towards the end, they rush through the door while been chased by deadly hounds. Its a metaphorical representation of transition while descending into different realms of mind (how a thought opens to close the existing thought and the whole picture changes in accordence with the new thought). In Petta, Kali enters through the bright light behind the door and when he opens the door the bright light appears along with him.

Petta - Rajini References
(Vol.1)
Petta works as an excellent documentary also. The film is loaded with 'Fan's Memories' as a jar of honey, where everything Rajini had brought to Tamil Cinema is captured neatly and spiced up with modernity. There are so many Rajini References throughout the film that allows a trip back and forth in time while watching Rajini simply executing his dymanic style.
I could only compile few matches by including the pictures from the promo videos of Petta. The rest, I will try to collate once the home viewing version of the film is released. There are plenty others, more than the ones present in the below picture. This is just a gimplse to avoid counseling and to show that there are lot more to talk about Petta rather than indulging in character assassination, defamation, negative campaign, slander and above all dirty politics.

Petta - Executioner
-
Lots of raving reviews about Petta Velan... being Velan myself, I had to watch the movie. :)
Verdict: It's a typical Mass (masala) movie, made for fans. Don't expect it to take Tamil cinema forward. Lol. No strong story or issues like in Kabali or Kaala.
Nevertheless, it's 3 hours of fast-paced entertainment with the usual plot of heroism and revenge. But who really cares about stories in a Rajni movie; certainly not the fans.
Even the supporting cast does not matter. It's all about Super Star. And Karthik ensures that the fan's appetite is met totally to their satisfaction.
Petta will be lapped up by the fans and they may want to watch it over and over again. For the rest, Petta is a watchable movie.

Hello NOV,
Glad that you liked the movie PETTA, and willingly recommended it to others.
The trick is the story. Too early to reveal anything, but there are few master strokes painted in the film. The exposition through the 'Torch Light Fight' and the 'Murder during the Moaning' came out of nowhere. Usually short story writers bring out such tricks, and Karthik has elegantly brought them up in Petta. Also, the strings that he pulls out to thread later are amazing. He weaves a story within a story : example Vijay Sethupathy’s silence is a reflection of what he told Petta by holding Anwar at gunpoint. The story in general sums up the Good, the Bad, the Ugly character biographies. The wonder is in the climax which is highly described as a 'twist', which is neither a closure nor an open ending but a multiple ending as Dennis Lehane's Shutter Island. Singar Singh's expressions should be decoded properly, which will light the fright and especially for him (the character Singaram), the film should be watched again.
Moreover the Tarantinesque moments are so graceful, elevating the scenes when Rajini is performing them. The last scene Rajini holding the gun is from Pulp Fiction. A similar poster was released for Jigardhanda and in Iraivi a huge 'Dirty Harry holding the magnum' poses as a background, while in Petta Rajini whistles 'Ennio Morricone - For A Few Dollars More' Theme. All these beautify, at the same time energize the scenes, diving through which Karthik narrates his story.
Of course, as you have mentioned, there are Rajini Factors too.

Colors of Judgement
(The Siente & the Stranger Series)
Stranger : When I kill it’s a crime. When those in power commit it, its justice. Even the epics that deal with massacre claim that the Great War was orchestered by the Lord himself on those who were against righteousness and He, the Superemo, had cleansed the world with that war, and the millions who died were mere instruments of this divine cleansing. The actions of a Man, a Hero and a God are projected differently eventhough the purpose of their actions is the same. Revenge by man is sin. Slaying by Hero is valliance. Massacre by God is cleansing. This is what we are taught. This is what we are forced to learn.
Siente : Justice is complicated and sometimes neither the Heroes nor the Gods act as infallible moral authorities.
There lived a hunter, very young and so handsome. None can resist his chramingness. He used his gift of beauty to feed his own arrogance. On a routine day hunting, he felt being followed. He hid himself inside a bush and caught his follower who was a pretty young girl; she was no match to his beauty. She had fallen madly in love with him and all she wanted was to hug him and lay her head on his broad chest. The hunter rejected her and pushed her away. Revoked of the simplest pleasure of love, she roamed aimless in the forest. Her despair wilted away just as the sound in the thin air. Her name was Echo.
The arogant act of the Hunter angered the God as Echo was indeed His innocent child. The God tricked the hunter to come to the lake side and made him watch his own reflection. The hunter fell in love with his own reflection. Unable to take his eyes off from the water, he stayed watching himself for days and died out of hunger and thrist by the lake side beside his own reflection.
And the Veethal asked Veekram, "O! Wisest of All. Answer to set yourself free from the burdens of the evil. Choose not to answer, your head will turn from one to thousand pieces. Is Beauty a fault of the hunter; Is Echo's desire a sin; And the act of God, is it just - Who shall stand at the Gate of Guilt, O! Judicious of All!"
Stranger : You cannot withdraw yourself like the Vampire by being tactical. My need is knowledge and not answers to your questions.
Siente : We all play a game. We are conditioned to choose sides. And we stick to our choice not considering the Truth. We start to fonction in a way that whatever happens to our choice happens to ourselves. We are programmed with the fact that the other side is always at fault. This diversity is what makes us feel alive.
Have you ever taken notice of the tiny rope attached to a tiny pole buried to the ground that binds an elephant ? The huge mamal does not pull itself free, but just cradles left to right standing near the tiny stick to which it has been attached to. A slightest pull from the gaint and the rope would tear into pieces. But the elephant stays being attached. The reason is that the elephant shall never try to get free. When the elephant was very young and much smaller, the same sized rope was used to tie it and, at that age, the tiny rope was enough to hold the small elephant. As the elephant grew up, it is conditioned to believe that it cannot break away. It believes that the rope can still hold it, so it never shall try to break free.
Stranger : Aren't we all the same, simply striving for development. Toiling to get what keeps us happy. Answering to all the needs in every which way possible. None can escape this self assgined fate, neither the tail nor the biting mouth.
Siente : The night stays longer than I thought keeping its darkness close to its heart. I need to rest. But before I retire, I shall tell you two stories. Remember, I am just the messenger. I deliver only the message. Decoding it is your task. Wisdom is the only way out, my child. It can save, gain and serve. Use it wisely as all its properties are true. None with thier spit of lie can blind the One who truly posses wisdom.
An aging king was depressed as he had no sucessor. In his final quest in search of a noble queen, he announced that his palace was open to all and those who came, can fetch whatever they want. The people entered the well of treasure and grabbed all oranaments, vessels and jewels made of gold. The King noticed a young woman standing in the corner. She was quite noticeable as she was the only one not moving. The King approached her and enquired why she as not plundering the palace. "Why hold on to the branch, sire, when I can reach the root ?", she replied. The king was so pleased with her and married her. The same evening he died and she became the ruler of the kingdom. She passed her first order and the ministers sent soldiers to every house and brought back all the wealth that was taken away from the palace. Her wisdom gained her both power and richess overnight.
A King believed in astrology and was very much interested to know his future. He invited the astrologers from around the world, fed them nicely and would ask them to predict his future. He rewarded them with diamonds and pearls when they spoke high about his horoscope. As soon as they predicted the misfortune, the king severed their head. The news about the King slaying the astrologers for speaking the truth reached the ears of a noble saint. He walked into the king's palace and started telling the king about his fortune and how blessed the people were. The king adored the way the saint presented to him his past and future. As the saint started to speak about the misfortune, the king, out of fear of severing his head, warned the saint by asking him, "Noblest Saint, have you ever predicted your own death". "Yes, O! King, who rules the land. My death shall take place an hour before your death", replied the saint promptly. Wisdom not only saved the saint but also gained him the strenght make the king accept the truth.
Stranger : Truth has no side. Justice does not take sides. But judgement, yes. Outward judgement often fails, inward judgement never. An individual's conscience and his judgment is the same thing; and as the judgement, so also the conscience, may be erroneous. Materialistic gains, without fairness, coats venom on the tongue that primarily poisons the individualistic values. But none with thier spit of lie can blind the One who truly possess wisdom.

Petta - Mysteries of a Masterpiece
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachmen...0&d=1547659246
Here is the structural framework (three act structure) of the movie Petta that tries to elaborate the form used to tell the story. It tries to determine the key conflict by defining the main characters while including briefly the setting and the events. The below account does not explore character backgrounds and personalities, neither registers the duration of each ACT; and the Resolution is kept low key in order not to expose the cinematic experience – ‘watch the feature in theaters’.
Inciting Event: Goons equipped heavily with sharp weapons assemble on the aisle before the huge wooden door shutting them from accessing the altar room of the Great Church. Hearing noises from inside, the goons excitedly discuss that their comrades have pulled the line of life of The Warden, who is their assigned target. But the picture through the painted glass windows portrays a different account of happenings. Looking at the men landing hard on the classical organ and shattering the instruments into pieces just like their bones being crushed by the fall, they panic. After discovering that their target is taking their associates for a ride of their lives, they hurriedly use a pew to break the wooden door open.
A silhouette passes by behind them extinguishing the burning candles. A mysterious man stands holding a candelabrum and moves swiftly towards the new pilgrims of the church. While efficiently handling the violent group by hitting them hard with broken objects, the mysterious man is taken by surprise when he is hit hard with a metal object on the head. Before he could react, another blow to his head throws him to the ground. The proud vanqueror calls his boss to inform him that their target is down. He repeatedly confirms the Fall of The Warden, when ... (watch the feature in theaters).

The opening event of the film does not initiate the main conflict, but is used to move the characters into a normal world. However, it is the turning point of the First Act, which briefly opens the main character.
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachmen...6&d=1547659222
First Plot Point: Through an angel's eye view, we see Kalli arriving at the shelter house of the Great Church. With a slap of his palm on the wooden table, he quickly takes the role of The Warden, and turns chaos into peace. When the civilization resumes to normal, he positions himself on top of the floor as an overlord and orders the students to assemble in front of him. While the young men shuffle, The Warden scrutinizes the gathering next moment his eyes start to float over tears.
Keyword : Nalla miratra kuzhandha
The first plot point has nothing to do with the conflict either. It is about the strange relationship between The Warden and a student. But, once again, it turns around to move the other characters into the normal world.
First Pinch Point: The protagonist (the mysterious man who does by two names Kalli and The Warden) encounters a conflict. He becomes a nightmare for an influential man in the estate. This minor conflict does not expose the main character yet. The character arc of Kalli/The Warden is redrawn keeping intact the mystery behind the personage. Three men observe Kalli/The Warden discretely, when one of them predicts him to be completely dangerous pointing at his seating posture. He bids that the mysterious man knows being watched and will turn around to surprise his watchers. They continue their watch, and … (watch the feature in theaters). To eliminate their nemesis they attack the shelter house of the Great Church at night. When the Warden realizes the assault, he confronts the bushwhackers trapped in the corridor, when ... (watch the feature in theaters).
Keyword : Ullay Poo Daa
Again, this dispute is not the main conflict but is used to introduce the main conflict. It opens the Inciting Event and brings a closure to the Act One by triggering the Act Two. In native language, at the interval, the main conflict has not yet been established.
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachmen...9&d=1547659239
Second Plot Point (Midpoint): We get a nice moment, in which the mystery surrounding the main character that made the audience to gravitate for Kalli/The Warden is revealed. The main character’s background is exposed with indications to deduce the personality which is an extreme opposite to the initial introduction. Petta’s past and his relationship with other new characters who build up the conflict are elaborated. Several characters enact with the main character to cook up the main conflict that eventually lands them all at a funeral.
Keyword : Yennakum thaan kovam varuthu
Second Pinch Point : Murder at the Moaning (watch the feature in theaters). What seems to be a disaccord between two families, turns into social disunity, and ends up creating a friction leading to vengeance. The witness to the cold blooded murder vows revenge orchestrating a distressful incident.
Keyword : Ottu Ketiyada Nathari
It’s during the Act Two various characters are brought into action that are key to the main conflict, while the characters from the first third of the film have nothing to do with the main conflict.
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/attachmen...7&d=1547659230
Third Plot Point: After the revelation, Petta fixes his objective – to find and kill his long time nemesis. He picks up a five men crew and sails to the City of Doom to confront his opponent. The Act 3 is primarily driven by few newer characters who were absent until now in the story or have made a brief appearance during Act One. Analyzing his enemy’s strength and evaluating the risk on attacking him at his own fort, Petta charts a strike plan.
Keyword : Sweet Sapadaporom!
The ACT 3 begins with a songs sequence illustrating the moves taken by Petta. The Third Plot Point is a classic narrative where we get proximity of a low moment (mostly conveyed in the score) but the whole event is a small spot of light (just as the green optical presentation pointer used by one of the character) for the spectacular climax. Even though it may look like a character development happening during the ACT THREE (mainly between three characters (The Good, The Bad, The Ugly)), it sets up a stage to resolve the conflict.
Third Pinch Point : Petta decides to divert the security around his enemy’s fort by initiation blasts around and inside his house. Petta and his men enter and take the strong hold into their control and ... (watch the further sequence in theatres).
Keyword : Petta Parrak
Climax: Petta makes yet another revelation (watch the feature in theaters).
Keyword : Kambili Siddhar
Climactic Moment: Petta pulls out his revolver.

Petta - Dead Don't Bite

The crow couple, Kaaka and Kaaki, had their nest built on a tree near a river outside the palace. Their happiness doubled when Kaaki laid eggs and Kaaka waited for them to hatch to take his kids for a fly around the palace area. Usually one parent stayed to gaurd the nest, while the other went to pick up food. That evening Kaaka invited Kaaki to have a meal together. When they returned all the eggs were gone. Kaaka flew away to wither his pain, while Kaaki wept at the foot of tree when she saw pieces of egg shells near a hole at the bottom of the tree. The crow couple monitored the burrow and one night they saw a serpent crawling out. The serpent silently climbed the neighbouting tree and stole the eggs. The next morning the crow couple watched the parents moaning over their lost babies with soreness in their eyes.
"My sufferings have transformed into weakness", Kaaki said, "We sit helpless while seeing the serpent destroying our family".
"We shall move far far away, my dear", Kaaka consoled, "Where there will be no one to disturb our harmony".
"There will always be a serpent crawling beneath our feet", saying so Kaaki flew away unable to control her grief.
Kaaka sat and watched the palace, thinking about ways to fortify his home. He knew he cannot win the serpent at war. With tears of vengence enveloping his eyes, he saw the queen walking from the palace to the river surrounded by heavily armed bodygaurds. She took her bath in the river and left back to the palace. This routine happened daily - the couple crow watched a new family crying on top of the tree - unable to support the tragedy, Kaaki flew away and Kaaka watched the queen taking her bath in the river.
One day Kaaka realised the pattern. The princess walked with jewels decorating her body. Her maids gently removed them and placed them near the river. Once the queen had taken her bath, the maids helped her to wear the jewels back. Kaaka smiled.
The next morning, Kaaka stopped Kaaki from flying away and asked her to stay back.
"For what my dear, to see yet another family shattered", she spoke dejected.
"Sirapana, tharamana sambavangala inemel dhaan paaka pora (Wait here my love, to witness the glorious end of the serpent)", saying so Kaaka cirlced around the area where the maids placed the queen's jewels. Men with spears gaurded the jewels, and between their safety circle, Kaaka dived in with full force cutting the wind with his chest and picked up the queen's prestigious ring. Kaaka soar high up, but started to fly lathargically allowing the king's men to chase him. When he reached his home tree, he dropped the ring in the serpent's hole.
One of the gaurd let his hand inside the burrow to look for the ring. He fell back crying loudly and the moment later, he laid dead. Shocked, the others saw a serpent's head peeping out of the hole licking the deadly air with its split tongue.
From the top of the tree, Kaaka and Kaaki saw the serpent receiving devastating wounds, its body punctured by the sparp spears of the king's men.

Petta - Flourish to Fall
The violent night turns chaotic when sirened vehicles approach the hostel building and the man in charge briskly walks onto the corridor, which was scattered with scared students. Without waiting to take his breath he asks to a ramdom student, "Where is he ?" Learning that the Mysterious Man is lying wounded on the floor above him, the man in charge collapses on the bench that hugged the wall. It was the turn of the replier to shoot the question, "Who is he?" The man in charge takes his time and what begins as a chuckle turns into a chortle as the reply.
Another man, miles away from where the Mysterious Man laid bleeding, utters a name inbetween his maniacal laughter.
Yet another bearded man, miles away in distance and time from where the Mysterious Man laid bleeding, calls out the same name.
The nameless unify to name the Mysterious Man. And Petta Parrak it is.

"How do you intend to kill him ?" he asked his son Jithu.
"With explosives. He may have escaped last time. If I don't succeed this time, you may bury me", Jithu replied.
"Bury you is what I shall do if you fail this time", he smiled at Jithu.
***---***
"Have you known your mother", he asked Jithu.
"She died while giving birth to me", Jithu replied
"Jithu, I am your father", he declared to Jithu.

"Am I your son ?", Jithu asked his father seated on the floor by his feet.
"Of course you are, my child", late came the reply. "Did you meet him", he asked Jithu.
"Yes", affirmed Jithu.
"Lies is what he is. If lie wants to lie, it shall callout his name. Beware of him, the one who alleges himself to be your father", he tapped Jithu on his shoulders.

"To reach the belly of the beast, you should get through its mouth", Jithu told his father. He walks into the mouth of the beast with explosives and plants one right inside the belly of the beast.

"'Yen kooda sernthu koothaadum nezhalum'", Petta laughed derisively. "The Dancing Shadows. Have you ever noticed your shadow dancing under the street lamplight", he asked him. Singaram looked around as though the words to coin his reply were hanging all around the room. Before him to his left was Anwar. Before him to his right stood Jithu. Right in front of him Petta stood looking straight into his eyes without a blink.
Seeing Singaram having no words, Petta charged to exhibit the energy of words, "Right under the light, the shadow is the densest, but also the tiniest. When you start to move, the shadow slowly grows infront of you. It becomes bigger and bigger, but also, thinner and thinner. As the shadow grows longer and thinner in front of you, another shadow emerges behind you that grows bigger and bigger behind you. When the shadow in the front thins out, the shadow behind gets closer and closer to you as you reach the the light of the next lamppost. Let's say that the man standing underneath the first lamppost is you when you murdered my family. You felt strong and content. You started to flourish as the shadow in front of you grew bigger just like your pleasure in killing, but at the same time pain was on its way, represented by me as the shadow behind you growing bigger and stronger as the shadow of fame in front of you gets thinner and shorter. We are now at the midpoint between the lampposts. The pain is so great it outweighs your delight. And with every step forward your pleasure dissolves and I intensify behind you. Finally, the pain is so unbearably intense that I have to act, so when you reach the point with the next lamp in zenith, I kill you. In between the lampposts, you flourish to fall, just like the dancing shadows."
Singaram looked bewilderedly at Jithu and then at Petta.

"What you said is point Jithu. But before entering the mouth of the beast, one has to face the beast first. Being alive after facing the beast is like rebirth", Petta lectured Jithu. Looking at the confusion on Jithu's face, Petta continued, "An unknown saint once told - A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and there ain't no running from it". He pulled Jithu gently and thrusted his shoulders with both his hand to make him sit on the sofa. He pulled a flipped chair nearer to Jithu and sat on the blade of the seat and held to the legs of the chair as a support. Seated over his new throne, Petta looked down straight into the soul of Jithu and said, "A lie that is half-truth is the darkest of all lies."
