IPOH: THE Ipoh India Social and Cultural Association organised a celebration to commemorate the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR)'s 96th birthday recently.
MGR, who was born on Jan 17, 1917, was an actor, director and film producer. He passed away at the age of 70 in Chennai, India, due to kidney failure. He was also Tamil Nadu's chief minister.
His popularity did not diminish after his death. He has many fans worldwide as he was known for his charity and contribution to India's movie industry.
Some of his popular movies included Manthiri Kumari (1947), Malaikallan (1954), Nadodi Mannan (1958), Rickshawkaran (1972) and Ulagam Sutrum Vaalibhan (1973).
The night started off with a slide presentation of MGR's life.
The highlight was the MGR Showmanship, a show which saw six performers impersonating their idol.
They came on stage dressed like MGR as they acted, sang and danced.
The event also saw the association honouring three people who excelled in movies, social work and politics.
They were P. Niragamugan for his role in movies, A. Govindarajoo (social work) and Datuk G. Rajoo (politics).
Tokoh Guru Malaysia Datuk Seri N. Selvamany presented the recipients with a shawl, garland and souvenir each.
Also present was Datuk S. Veerasingam, the special adviser to Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Association chairman P. Palaiya said the commemoration was the first time the association organised a grand function in memory of MGR.
"In addition, the association also donated packets of rice to 200 less fortunate families in the state," he said.
Guest-of-honour was Perak Goldsmiths and Jewellers Association president, Datuk Amaluddin Mohamed Ismail.

சேலம் மாடர்ன் தியேட்டர்ஸிசில் "மகேஸ்வரி" படப்பிடிப்பில் நடித்துக்கொண்டிருதேன். அண்ணன் மக்கள் திலகம் எம். ஜி. ஆர். "அலிபாபாவும் 40 திருடர்களும்" படப்பிடிப்பில் கலந்து கொண்டு விட்டு புறப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார் அப்போது நான் அங்கே நின்று கொண்டிருந்தேன்.
காரில் ஏறும் சமயத்தில் திடீரென்று என்னை மக்கள் திலகம் எம். ஜி. ஆர். அவர்கள் அருகில் அழைத்து "தம்பி ! கணவனே கண் கண்ட தெய்வம்" படம் பார்த்தேன். மிகவும் நன்றாக இருக்கிறது. சண்டைகள் எல்லாம் புது மாதிரியாகச் செய்து இருக்கிறீர்கள். காமெடி பைட் நன்றாய் இருந்தது. சீரியஸாகவும் பைட் செய்யணும் என்று மனம் திறந்து பாராட்டி தனது பண்புள்ளத்தை காட்டிக் கொண்டார்.
அடுத்தவர்களிடத்தில் உள்ள திறமையை மதித்து பாராட்டி வாயார வாழ்த்தும் பண்பு அவரிடம் குவிந்திருக்கிறது
ஒரு மனிதனை பற்றி தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்றால் அவனுடைய நண்பனை அறிந்துகொண்டால் போதும் என்று கூறுவார்கள் மக்கள் திலகம் எம்.ஜி. ஆர். மன்றத்தின் பண்பும் அத்தகையதுதான். சென்னை பிளாசா தியேட்டரில் அண்ணன் நடித்த "படகோட்டி" திரைப்படம் பார்க்க மாட்னி காட்சிக்கு நானும் சாவித்திரியும் சென்றிருந்தோம். இடைவேளைக்கு முன்பாக சென்று விட வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தோம். ஆனால் படம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த விறுவிறுப்பில், அதை மறந்து விட்டோம்.
திடீரென்று இடை வேளை வந்து விட்டது நாங்கள் எழுந்து வெளியே போக முடிய வில்லை. ரசிகர்கள் கூட்டமாக எங்களை சூழ்ந்து கொண்டார்கள். குளிர் பானம், சாக்லேட், பிஸ்கட் என வாங்கி கொண்டு வந்து "சாப்பிடுங்கள் ..... என்று அன்புடன் உபசரித்தனர். அண்ணன் படத்தை பார்க்க வந்ததால் அண்ணனைப் போலவே அவர்கள் உபசரித்தனர். படம் துவங்கியதும் அவரவர் இடத்துக்கு அமைதியாக சென்று விட்டனர். படம் முடிந்து எப்படி கூட்டத்தை சமாளித்து வெளியே செல்வது என்று தயங்கி கொண்டிருந்தோம். அப்போது என்னையும் சாவித்திரியையும் சுற்றிலும் வந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மன்றத்தினர் அரண் போல் சூழ்ந்து நின்று கொண்டு, ஒரு இராணுவ கட்டுபாட்டுடன் எங்களை சிறிதும் சிரமப்பட வைக்காமல் காரில் ஏற்றி வழியனுப்பி வைத்தனர். அவர்களுடைய பண்பாடு, ஒழுக்கம், கட்டுப்பாடு ஆகியவைகளை காண எங்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது. அண்ணன் எம்.ஜி. ஆரின் பண்பை அவர்கள் பிரதிபலித்தனர்.

Thank you very much for your nice pictures captured and posted.
Kovai always prove MGR's Fort by setting Records both in Cine Field and Political Field. Even the Black & White Movies of our beloved MGR, quite often re-released (without any time gap) creates new Record in collections.
It is not flattery but a fact that still MGR Movies alone are saving the Theatre Owners, in not closing, by virtue of the present day conditions.
Similarly, the Party led by M.G.R. when he was alive, with clean sweep captured almost all the Assembly Seats in the District during the Elections, he met.
Even now he is the Vote Banker for his Party, as assessed by the Media and Political observers and viewers.

The tallest among the camp elephants, Rathi acted in hit films like 'Nalla Neram', starring late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran and 'Annai Oru Alayam' which had Tamil superstar Rajnikanth as its hero, to name a few.
The elephant would be buried tomorrow by 6 AM and a large pit is being readied for it.
Ameer Haja, Deputy Director, MTR, said, all elephants in the camp would be brought near the pit and would push the body into it as per practice.
