Without the golden voice of TMS , I wonder whether the 2 giants Nadigar Thilagam and Makkal Thilagam would have reached this far ! I mean, still they would have achieved success but it was TMS who had been instrumental in giving maximum impact to their acting. Without songs, our tamil film industry ( why tamil, the entire Indian film industry ) cannot survive……as through songs only, powerful thoughts are being conveyed to the audience………… TMS LIVED AND BREATHED LIKE SHIVAJI AND MGR. Right from THOOKU THOOKI , the great singer had given precise voice modulation for both and I wish to pick some special ones which had deep impact on us :
1. SINDHANAI SEI MANAMAY :
From Ambigapathi …..Just observe the body language of Shivaji and the modulation when TMS moves from a normal level to high pitch. Terrific variation when he sings….Andhagan varumbodhu avaniyil yaar thunai …..
2. MULLAI MALAR MELAY :
Indeed another splendid song . A pure kaanada ragam based composition and TMS at his best , giving on dot impression as if Shivaji sang this song !
3. PONAAL POGATTUM PODAA :
A totally crestfallen Shivaji , having lost his dear wife , screaming uncontrollably and venting his frustration through power packed meaningful song realizing the harsh realities of life….
4. YAAR ANDHA NILAVU :
From the movie Shanti, altogether different song, a sort of western type and TMS once again comes up with his best for Shivaji. This was one song which TMS was reluctant initially as it had some western resemblance but came out outstandingly well ultimately.
5. PONNAI VIRUMBUM BOOMIYILAY :
TMS echoes the love and bondage between loving life partners. You can clearly hear the fondness of Shivaji over Sarojadevi as she acts a care taker of a handicapped husband with all the care and devotion
6. ANDHA NAAL NYABAGAM NENJILAY VANDHADHEY :
From Uyarndha manidhan, TMS ran full length and breadth of the recording studio to give the impact of Shivaji singing the song after a brief jogging ! Such was his commitment to the success of the song and no wonder it was a super hit and even now , its being seen and listened to with awe !!
TMS laughs , cries, sheds tears, talks like Shivaji !! great presentation.
7. PALOOTI VALARTHA KILI :
A unique song which TMS sang on watching the previous recording which was sung by MSV ! You can hear the stress that TMS gives to each every word and breathes fire all through the song…venting the frustration of a Father who feels let down by his son ….
8. AMMAMAA THAMBI ENDRU NAMBI :
From Rajapart rangadurai, TMS echoes the emotions of a poor stage play artist who longs for love and affection out of his family members
9. POOMAALAYIL OR MALLIGAI :
An evergreen duet song for dedicated Shivaji fans ! ask any Shivaji fan and this song will come under top 10 on romantic moods of Nadigar thilagam
10. PAATUM NAANAY BHAVAMUM NAANAY :
Splendid rendition, TMS breathed like Shivaji in this song ! Naan asaindhaal asaiyum agilam ellamay….arivai manidhaa un aanvam peridhaa ! vow …unforgettable lyrics….
11. AAHAA MELLA NADA MELLA NADA :
This is another song reserved for hardcore Shivaji fans as he will be at his romantic best with Sarojadevi
12. ENGAY NIMMADHI :
You will not get a better song than this when it comes out echoing your frustration when the whole world goes against you and you have little hopes of survival …what a terrific song by TMS !! only TMS can give such an impact
13. ISAI KETTAAL PUVI ASAINDHAADUM :
From the movie Thavapudhalvan, a reminiscent of the great Tanzen, a lovely song through which TMS makes the candles lit and its another Nadigar thilagam special for you !
14. VANDHA NAAL MUDHAL :
A very meaningful song, Shivaji sings while riding on a bicycle….being heard extensively even today.
15. ENNAI YAAR ENDRU ENNI ENNI NEE PAARKIRAI
From the one and only Paalum pazamum, TMS expresses the feelings of a husband dearly missing his old life partner
16. PAAR MAGALAY PAAR :
The song is so striking ….. echoes the heartburn emotions of a Father who is crestfallen for having lost his dear dear daughter ……
17. AVAL PARANDHU PONAALAY :
Once again, its paar magalay paar only, this time, more striking ……Just listen when TMS takes over from PBS with the words….aval enakkaa magal anaal …..naan avalukku magan aanen ….splendid rendition….
18. KANN EDHIRAY THONDRINAAL
From Iruvar ullam, Nadigar thilagam exchanges thoughts on the most ideal woman that he came across in his life
19. CHELLA KILIGALAAM PALLIYILAY :
Along with a fleet of children , Nadigar thilagam acts as a care taker and dear uncle , making them sleep …..another gem of a song from TMS
20. YAARADEE NEE MOHINI :
A suave Parthiban character , an interesting Villain portrayed by Nadigar thilagam in Uthama puthiran and TMS is on dot here…..the voice will be filled be youth …youth …youth….
21. DEVANAY ENNAI PAARUNGAL :
Every Christmas / Good Friday, this song appears by default ! actually , TMS was not called for …for the English phrases that appear in between …after experimenting with various singers from his group, Mellisai Mannar came back to TMS himself and he completed with aplomb….
22. MUTHUKALO KANGAL :
From Nenjirukkum varai, another song known for lyrics and splendid rendition …..Sandhitha velayil sindhikka veyillai …thandhu vitten yennai…. an evergreen melody
23. MALARNDHU MALARAADHA PAADHI MALAR POLA
You need any other song to convey fondness between two blood relations…a brother and a sister…….just listen to the lyrics…kannin mani pola…maniyin nizal pola…kalandhu pirandhomadaa….indha mannum kadal vaanum maraindhu mudindhaalum marakka mudiyaadha daa…..uravai pirikka mudiyaadhadaa……
TMS goes into a very base level to sing this part....
24. MAGAARAJAN ULAGAI AALUVAAN
From Karnan, its another beauty for Shivaji…… indha karnanukku mattum enna idhayam illayaa ?? TMS poses questions….
25. AGARA MUDHALA EZUTHELLAM ARIYA VAITHAI DEVI
From Mahakavi kalidas, this movie is another landmark for Nadigar thilagam....... a dumb Kalidas suddenly opening out with flurry of words and look at the dedicated effort by TMS in this song !
Music directors, from time to time, experimented with other great singers like KJY, SPB, AMR but none could match with the vocals of Nadigar thilagam precisely like that of TMS’s
For Shivaji, TMS was like unsaid rule for loooooong…. As age caught up with Shivaji, so also for TMS….. IR had to resort to Malaysia Vasudevan who tried his best to match in the 80s…..
TMS’S VOICE WAS LIKE AN OXYGEN TO A NADIGAR THILAGAM SONGS
balaji,
One more excellent post :D
Balaji,
A great list of songs from Sivaji and TMS Combination. I love all these songs. A small correction - the song 'Agara mudhala Ezhuthellam ...' is from the film 'Saraswathy Sabatham' just after able to speak Sivaji sings the song in praise of Saraswathy. I don't know whether MKKalidas a song with the lyric start 'Agara ...'
Kalnayak
You are correct... Agara mudhala is from SS only... I think Malarum vaan nilavum is from mahakavi kalidas .......
Thanks for pointing out....
Superb posts balaji....keep this thread alive....let the flow continue.
the song also has each line starting with a, aa,e,ee, u, uu etc. Imagine the greatness of the poet.APN would have taken just 4 or 5 angles with NT sitting down and the full song gets over....no gimmicks...just plain good lyrics, plain good music, plain good singing and plain good acting.
Another song from a mythological "thiruvilayadal"........"paartha pasumaram, padithuvitta...." the philosophy of life in such simple words...no "nokias" and "strawberrys" and singers singing in totally bad tamil. For people who love NT, the tolerance level goes down when we hear tamil being murdered.TMS was not a tamilian, by birth he was a Saurashtrian...he mastered the accent....why can't there be proper training in pronounciation.Sorry for digressing......."eesan potta kanakku maravillai, poi vizhuntharu"...
mr.mohanram.....why dint shivaji do movies in his 60's like deniro or al pacino or others...only devar mahan to prove his talent!
nobody offered him or he dint do the roles which doesnt fit his status?
he could have been utilized...what a performance in devar magan...

AVAL PARANDHU PONAALAY :

oh yeah...... just see how TMS sweeps over from PB with his MAGNETIC VOICE.
But i cant agree, that IF NOT FOR TMS shivaji's song would be LIFELESS.

Hi all,
This is my first post in this thread though I have posted a few in other threads. I felt very sad that I missed this till now.To make up,
I had been reading this thread in one go and I felt rejunevated.Great inputs from everybody.Being an avid NT fan I wish to contribute(!) something to this thread. Let me start with some trivia and that too some answers for some questions asked in this forum.
Regarding Sivaji-Lakshmi combo, people missed one movie
Unakkaka Naan- 1976 release produced by Balajee.
Somebody had quoted that in 1970, E.Vandhal & Sorgam got released on the same day and both ran for 100 days and had asked whether any other actor had done this?
Buddies, no actor in Tamil cinema had done this and our NT had done this not once but many times.
1.1967- Deepavali- O.V.Oravu & Iru Malargal - both 100 days.
2.1970- Deepavali- E.Vandhal & Sorgam- both 100 days.
Other occasions when two films were released and one among them became a hit was
1.1959- Deepavali - Bhaga Pirivinai- 216 days
Aval Yaar -Not successful
2. 1971- Ap 14th- S.En Sundari- 100 days
Praptham- 50 days.
The only time NT was not sucessful was
1982-Deepavali- Parichaiku Neramatchu & Oorum Uravum.
But the best part was even when he was in the evening of his carreer, he was not afraid to release his 2 films on the same day.The occasion I am referring to is
1987-Aug 27- Jallikatttu- 100 days
Krishnan Vandhan- 50 days.
See it was not a festival day like Deepavali or Pongal. The Tamil cinema had at that time firmly established RK & KH and VK,SR,Prabu and Karthick. But still NT had no hesitation. When the so called BO kings released movies pnce in 6 months or 1 yr, NT was totally different. He proved quality and quantity can co-exist.
Another proof for the above trait was
1959- 2 films-VBKBomman & B.Pirivinai -both 200 days
1961- 3 films- Paava Mannipu,Paasa Malar & Paalum Pazhamum- all silver jubliees(ie)175 Days+. Remember this films ran in all major centres and not as noon show in 250 seater theatre in Chennai.
Unlike present day heroes who are in good in acting but fail in BO, NT was good in both. There is still a lot that can be said on this.
Regards
PS: While talking about Jallikattu, one interesting info is that was the first and last movie of Sivaji which had MGR as the chief guest for the 100th Day celebration. [Dec 5th- 100th day celebration and Dec 24th- MGR passed away]
Welcome to the hub murali :D . Have fun
There was a sentence in this thread which said Manian(IP) could not believe that Sivaji, the single person is playing all the roles. I too have felt not once or twice but 100 times when I see Deiva Magan, especially the scene when all the three come in the same scene.( I avoided the word meet because the third Sivaji doesn't know about his elder brother and his presence in that room.I think Saradhaa started that famous dialogue but stopped.
The prelude to this scene is appa Sivaji sensing that his elder son is alive goes to meet Major and hands him a blank cheque for his son. initially Major refuses, but Sivaji says that only his son has got the right to reject it.
The next scene Appa Sivaji is sitting in his room. The son comes in.On seeing him Appa gets up slowely. He is seeing the son for the first time.See the father's face, Thigaippu, Santhosam, kutra unarvu all just flash thro' his face.
Then the son asks" Ennai theriyutha? Kannan.Neenga koopidu naan theringikka vendiya perai, naan solli neenga puringikka vendiya nilamai".
Father in an emotion choked voice says "Kanna"
Son " Ethukka intha cheque-i koduthinga"
Father " ellam un ethirkalathirkathan"
Son" Ethir kalam? appa naan ungalai onnu ketkalama?
Father again emotinally " Keluppa"
Son in a pleading voice asks " Oru kudumbathilae Ambilai Pillai Poranthaa athuvum Thalachan Pillaiya Porantha romba Santhosa paduvangalame, Unmaiya"
Father " Amam, Unmaithanppa".
Son's face will immediately turn hard and he will raise his voice" Illa,Poi." Father will have a startled look in his face.
Son's voice now will have anger and sadness " Neengalum ennai mathiri thane porantheenga. Neenga azakai illai inu ungappa ungalai thookiya pottar? Illayae, ennna ungappa oru ezhai, avarukku idhyam irundathu ana engappa periyaa panakkarar avarukku idayam irukka vendiya idathilae irumbu petti than irundathu. Evvaluvu avamanam(sobs) evvalu peru ennai kanda udanae nayyai thruatharthupole ennai adichu viratinangaa. Ithukku padilae ennai neenga konnirukalame"
Unable to bear any more, the father bursts out " athaidhanda naan cheyya sonnen ana andha muttal Raju(Major) athai cheyyama vittutan." Having said that he realises his mistake and says "Kanna intha ulagathilae naan patta kashtam nee padakoodathuinu than ithai ellam chenjan"
At this time the door opens and the elder son goes and stands behind an almirah. The Father regains his composure and sits in his chair. The younger lovely looking second son (NT,41 at that time will look like a 30 year old in this role) will do a cat walk like nadai and start " Daddy"
Father gouravathodu " mmm--"
Vijay(Younger Sivaji's name) in a hushy tone " Panam Venum"
Father loudly " Enna"
Son will have a shirk and the voice will still go down " Koncham Panam venum".
At this moment father will burst out " Panam! Panam! nee ennai pakka varathe panathukkathana"Here Sivaji will convey the agony of a father who expects love from his son but which is not forthcoming
Vijay " No dad, en hotel-ilae"
Father will not allow him to complete and shout " Hotel!Hotel!Damn your hotel. Ellathaiyum izuthu moodu"
Vijay character in an apologetic tone " yes, yes.ellathaiyum close panna than --" he will stop mid sentence as his eyes will focus on the blank cheque lying on the table. His face will turn happy and
" Naan varuvenenu cheque ready-ya vachiruntheegala daddy " and will take the cheque. Father avan eduthira poranae endra bayathil "yei athai edukathae" endru soluvar. Athey samayam avar thirumbi kannan -ai parpaar. Kannnan Sivaji thalaiyai mattum atti eduthu kollatum enbathu pola seyvar. Ithai ondrum gavanikkatha vijay Sivaji avar kariyathilayae kannaga cheque-i ethukondu "thanks dad" endru solli vittu oru flying kiss koduppar.
Appa Sivajiyo oru dharma ankadamana muga bavathudan iruppar
Kannan Sivaji santhosathil almirah-vai kuthuvar.Moondru perumae ore framil ithai seivargal.
Intha scene, they would have taken as a mask shot. Athavathu the film would be divided into 3 parts, they would have picturised Vijay Sivaji blowing a FK(at that time the other 2 portions would have been covered with the black pad), then Kannan Sivaji reacting with the kuthu (now the 1st and 3rd portion would be covered) and then the appa Sivaji's reaction would have been picturised
See our NT had to perform all the three times showing 3 different emotions and at three different times. Not only acting talent but you require a clear idea about the camera work and speed and more than that timing. It has to synchronise. If kannan character does his part earlier than Vijay character, the scene is gone. See how exceptionally well he has done that. Now coming back to the scene ,Kannan will come out and say in all happiness" Paarthingala Appa yaarukku poyi cheranamo, avanukku cherthirichu. Enppa unga asthikkum asaikkum irukkarae ore magan thambi, avanai enppa satham podareenga" Udanae Appa Sivaji oru athangathoda
" ore payyan, ore payyan inu romba chellam koduthu valathithuta avangamma" stopping suddenly realising his mistake solvar" ungamma. Avan cherkai sariillainu kelvipattan
Serakoodathavangalodu sernthu avan pathai maari poyiduvanonu bayama irrukku " Immediately Kannan Sivaji will say " Thambikku entha abathum varamae naan pathukiran.en uyire koduthavathu thambiyai kappathuven"
After assuring his father Kannan Sivaji thanake urithanae style-il idathu kalai lesaga valaithu idathu kaiyai mattum uyarthi " varen" endru sollivittu povar.
God.I have seen this film 10 times in theatre, 100 times this scene in TV,but while watching all those times I have always felt that all the three are different persons.Appa mela kopam and sankatam varum.Kannan mel parivu and anbu,Vijayay romba rasithu santhosam thonum.
What an acting! To borrow the great poet's words,
Here was an actor ! When comes another?

PS: Sorry if my post is too long. Couldn't avoid because DM simply makes me right. second sorry if I have missed any dialogue.

Excellent recap of Deiva magan... everyone had their own favourite NT in this movie !
You know, even the director ACT felt somewhat different ( he explained / exclaimed once )
ACT says .....
When NT is about the play this terrific scene which you explained.... as NT has to take up character by character, ACT felt as if the character himself is walking right in front of him !
When ACT saw Shivaji, one shot he could realise that he is going to play the role of that Father ...followed by the first son and finally the second son....
The body language of NT was changing at rapid pace inbetween shots....and it was astounding sight for ACT .....
Indeed its one of the best scenes played by NT
My favourite in this scene was the Father character as he will be fretting and fuming and feel humbled in front of his first son......unable to control his anger / emotions....
great to see your extensive posting...keep it up friend
Dear S.B.
Thanks a lot. Let us all build a " web " castle for our one and only NT.
Regards
PS: I also remember having read ACT's interview you had mentioned.

Actually Raghu is working on this and the idea has just conceived.
I wish we all join together and create a website for Nadigar thilagam
Mr. Mohan ram I request you to provide all valuable inputs and advise to build the site
Murali.Lakshmi,balaji and others,
I can't explain how much happy I am by seeing all these discussions and posts on our NT..keep up the good work.

As usual Nadigar Thilagam Amazed me with his one second mannerism in many times...Jayalalitha was working at sivaji's house ..Sivaji liked Jaya and wrote a letter to her and ask Major sunderrajan (his servant) to pass it to Jaya ..Later sivaji got a letter from jaya saying she decided her life and will convey him in person ..Jaya came to sivaji and said she took a decision and decided to get married..while sivaji thought It is him ,she is planing to marry ,finally realised it is muththuraman who is his close friend ..siavji hide his disappointment and bless jaya ..This time major came and try to give the letter to Jaya..Sivaji took the letter and said "Ithu oru kaalavathiyana kaditham"..then jaya leave..major asked "Enna ejaman..neengale neradiya pesi mudichiteengala?" ..Sivaji just says "Aha" with his immitable style...can feel that mannerism only if you watch it..

In the quoted scene, S.P.Chowdry walks in to the dining room. KRV & Pramila are seen sitting around the dining table. Seeing all the food left untouched,
SPChoudry " Lakshmi, Sappidalae?"
KRV " Oru naal sappidalaena uyira poidum?''
SPC turning to Pramila " Vimala, Sappidalae?"

With this he will start to leave the room and KRV from behind will call " Ennanga, sappidalaya?"

The scene you mentioned from Avanthan Manithan was a superb one, unforgettable. Sivaji a widower will love JJ and JJ though having high regard for NT will neverthless be drawn towards muthuraman via his daughter (Muthuraman also a widower). Just as you said NT will write a letter to JJ and give it to Major. While major goes in search of JJ, she will come to Sivaji's house.
On seeing her NT " Lalitha, vaa'' endru sollivittu kalyanathai patri pesa arambipar. In the course of the conversation NT will ask " manaviyai izathanvanga marumanam pannuvathu thappilai-ingriya"
JJ will reply that she is ready ti marry a widower.
NT with so much happinees on his face will ask " Lalitha ,nee padichava, panbu niranjava, unnai manaiviyaga adayara alavukku--"
Cutting him short JJ will ask " Chandru(MR's character) thakuthi illathavarinu ninaikreengala "
Struck by the words NT-in mugathai parka vendumae, athirchi, ematram, thigaippu ellam minni maraiyum.
He will control himself and bless her. At that time Major enters and on seeing JJ " inga irukeengala ? ungalai engayalaum thedarthu? " he will try to give the letter, when NT interferes and gets the letter and tores it. JJ leaves and as you mentioned Major will ask " Ellam pesi mudichuteengala ejaman?''
At that moment NT standing on the staircase facing camera will turn and say "Aha" a gesture which is only to be seen and enjoyed. Major, thinking that NT & JJ are going to get married will speak out with enthu. Cutting him short NT will say " Kalyanam Chandrukkum Lalithavirkkum ".
Major in an emotional tone " Naan muttal, ejaman, muttal"
NT will immediately reply " Nee muttal illadae, un pechai kettu konjam avasarapatten paaru, naanthan muttal" and will start climbing the staircase.
An unforgettable scene, unforgettable dialogue and an unforgettable gesture oozing with style.
Thanks for Joe for making me remember the scene
