Maarappu sEla.. lovely! :musicsmile: Crazy things happening in the interludes and some topnotch bass lines! I like the jumpy tabla+synth drums percussions as well.

Hearing Chinnavar album for the last two days. I bought it recently (Aditya music have released this along with 'Senthamizh Paatu' and 'Pandithurai') An album worth having.
I have heard 'andhiyile vaanam' (who hasnt ;) ) earlier but the other songs I was not too familiar with. The album is a strange one if I may say so. The director seems to have told Raja that there is only one situation for all songs and he wanted similar type of songs. All songs are duets, all of them very rhythmic, not melodic. Almost as if in every song the hero and heroine are teasing each other. No solo, no melodious romantcic song, no teasing song, no sad song. All songs must be the same!!! That's how I see these songs. And the genius that is Raja gives so much variety in such a constricted situation.
'andhiyile vaanam' is well known. Excellent rhythm makes it instantly catchy. 'Gunutur Gongoora' is superb. Didn't think Raja would use this ragam for such a song. Which ragam is this? Head to the other thread to find out :D . Next comes the song that Plum spoke about 'Kadalora Kavidhaiye'. If it hasn't already got into the freakout Raja thread, it needs to go there pronto. It is as if the fisherfolks are singing a western choir song!!! I laughed out loud when I heard this song. No one is more subversive than this man and no one is more iconoclastic than him. How can you mix and mash such different genres and yet come out with such lovely song!! Next comes the Mayamalavagowla stunner, 'kottumkali kottu'. This is a stunner. When I wrote on twitter that I was listening to 'Chinnavar', @kanapraba immediately replied with this song saying that one one else other than Raja can dream of this. Next is the song which KV alluded to earlier, 'maarapu chelai'. As KV says the instrumentation is very interesting. Especially the synth + tabla part for percussion and the mild chorus in the background. Then come two super energetic numbers, both featuring Malaysia, 'padagottum pattamma' and 'uttalangirigiri maama'.
Who could have thought so much variety can be given when all song situations seem to be same!!! Listen to the full album here:

You sure it is Gamanasrama. Generally in Gamansrama you hear a lot of 'Poorvi Kalyani'. Here I hear more of Panthuvarali / Kamavardhini (especially in the pallavi). Ofcourse the charanams deviate from the raga.Quote:
