I totally agree with A2A here. It is very difficult to compare actors of one era from another. Technology, Taste and Maturity of audience change significantly from one era to another. So we should stay away from comparison. Within era it is ok but comparing different era will not bring any solid conclusion.

I agree with your arguement but not many actors are capable of satisfying all the generations. Again I am not a big fan of Nagesh either. On the same note I am not convinced that Vadivelu comedies can be timeless classics. And I would argue the same thing if somebody says old actors are far better than new actors.

We can judge only based on the contemporary taste and whether the old artists passes the test of time. Gounder , in spite of belonging to the previous generation still holds the fort among the youngsters. His popularity is very evident in the internet and corporate world. Gounder is just an anti-thesis to your idea that taste differs between generations.

I think - Comedians who are natural and spontaneous will continue to entertain people for a long time. MR Radha is a solid example.

The people who grow up in sixties are my father's generatio and they are the one who had enjoyed nagesh comedy and they are still enjoying it. But they do not show their fanatism in HUB/forum/online/corporate world since they have grown up. many of them already retired from industry. Unlike them, we grow up watching gounder's comedy and use his dialogues in day to day life because we are in different age group. Just a reply for usae of gounder's dialogue in corporate world, the corporate culture had changed a lot in the past few decades. Gounder is atleast ten years youner than Nagesh in industry and i do not want to say anything about vadivelu.

Nagesh, his dialogue delivery and timing = superb. Great character actor, and especially delicious when doing negative roles. But slapstick, body language, beginning from Chandrababu, right up to Suruli, all rooted in Jerry Lewis. Nagesh himself never shied from acknowledging that. In older age, he shined because, not of his body language, but his delivery.

Annan/VV are original. Down the road, Annan will be remembered, not santhAnam.

Agree with Saai, look at MRR's comedy, still awesome. And he's a goddam original. We still watch him, not MRR Vasu. Or any other imitators if there are any.

Jerry Lewis:nagesh=Goundamani:sathanam

Ridiculus comparison thala. MRR & goundamani's comedy's are sargasam at peak....Even very few younger generation knows MRR's comedy since it is not shown as often as current generation comdies. It doesn't mean that he is inferior to the current generation comdedians. Off late, the current generation comedies are well blown out of proportion due to media.

Jerry Lewis' body language. Which means Nagesh 50% original. Annan = 100% original. Santhanam = diet coke lite version of Annan. My point is, the more original you are, the more you will be remembered. Have you watched Jerry Lewis' films? After watching, you will no longer be impressed with Nagesh's physical side of comedy. But the dialogue delivery/timing part yes, Nagesh is awesome. Now VV, the hero of this thread, is pure original. He will be remembered for long time.

There is no doubt VV is original. Infact, like Nagesh continued acting into his 70s, if there is one current comedian who'd do that, it is Vadivel because he has solid fundamentals as a character actor.

On this pure "original" thing. How do we know for sure if somebody is 100% original, as against 70% original? Real life la (or some stage performer) yaraiyavadhu paathu influence airukka mudiyaadha? Or more than one, for that matter?

Of course, i get Groucho's point - Vadivel Balaji-a rasikka mudiyaadhu (like i find Chaplin Chellappa unfunny now), i know. It's just that there is an overemphasized correlation of influence on (lack of) originality/creativity. As in, it's difficult to envision a world where someone is "100%" original.

Same old argument (IMHO): Led Zeppelin vs some Ghazal dude's "original" comps or
Raaja's "Veetukku veetukku vaasappadi" or Rahman's "Konjam Nilavu" vs S.A Rajkumar's patented original "Rosappu sinna rosaappu"

I actually did not use originality word - I used - natural and spontaneity. In old comedies, the preparedness is very evident. "Look this is a funny line" timing and some unfunny slapsticks. This "ahA eeii" is what I called spontaneous and natural...that which comes with the flow...like a tea time fun.

The above factor is very tightly related to the originality and I think thats what Groucho mean too

yes it is ferfaamans and the impact it made on us that matter. but original naa, unga defenition padi paathaa kooda, the 1st guy who brings on cinema screen, what he saw on stage or real life is generally considered original. And also, there are many many such original thingi he makes. One general note is, all this is madurai behaviour. may be or may not be.
