nice movements in the interludes and when suresh wadkar joins asha in the charanam it reaches a different level. for Vidyasagar fans this will remind them of "Malare maunama" The second interlude violin passages are typical ilaiyaraaja...Quote:

I thought Deemi Deemi (Siva) or Kaise kahoon (Nandu) is the best of songs Raaja has given in Hindi. But this one...Quote:

'aaro paadunnu doori' from 'Katha Thudarunnu'. Probably the best song of last year for me. 'anadala lokam' gives it a close run for the money. That now reminds me. Need to listen to 'anadala lokam' now.

Oomakkuyil - Thaazhampoo Thaalil Nin (IR/ONV Kurup/S Janaki)
It's one of the 'perfect 10' S Janaki chechi song all the way and Maestro knows it. This is what is called 'Singing'.
SJ starts with beautiful la la la humming which directly sets the mood of the song without going into the song. That's Chechi! What a start! After the flying start, observe the prelude before the pallavi. Second time when she sings Thaazhampoo, she elongates it to improvise it, how sweet. Violins, flute and guitar sets the melody race in the interludes. Soothing long interludes.
In charanams the bass track provide the perfect counter melody and the way the bass guitar finishes at the last line of charanam is a beauty (goosebumps), only Maestro can do it.
Typical Balu Mahendra picturization.
Rant: Current generation singers should learn from S Janaki how to get the perfect feel for a song. This song is a perfect example. They all sing beautifully, but they somehow I don't find this kind of feel in most of the songs. May these kind of songs does not come at all to showcase their talent.
This song is in loop now, very breezy and haunting too. S Janaki. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

A day of new finds, thanks to contributors of this thread :ty:
Never heard "Kaise Kahoon" before  beautiful interlude with violins...
Really enjoying "Thazhampoo" from Oomaikuyil
Prabu starrer Aanand..
Raaja was (is) way way ahead of his times - the tunes of "Anand" are shining proofs of this point ...what a mind blowing album..
V_S,
I heard 'thazhampoo' first in Violin Vicky's blog. Wonderful description by you. This song is divine with the bass guitar out of the world. Coincidentally have been listening to this song for the past two days and as usual when I listen to it I can listen to it just one time. It has to be heard over a period of a few days before we can move on to another song.
Glad you all enjoyed the Thaazhampoo song. Terrific song!
Sureshji, as you correctly pointed out, I still could not come out of the song.
'thoorakkizhakku uthikkum maanikka chempazhutha, naan ingu eduthu vechchEn veRRili thaambalathil' - I think this is a malayalam IR song. Can anybody confirm ?

Kiru, I think you were referring to this song (Dhoore Kizhakkudikkum) in Chithram (starring lalettan)?Quote:

If so, music is by Kannur Rajan. There are some good classical songs in this movie.
Two Chitram songs - dhoorE & eeNam were quite IR'ish :-)Quote:

Yes. I have heard a few Kannur Rajan songs which have the influence of Raja. I have heard that he was a big fan of Raja's music.

Now compare these two songs and there is a small resemblence, isn't it? :)
Thanks all, I have been taken the second time by another MD operating in the same idiom. What can I say , it has all the elements of IR's music, the harmony, the tabla+guitar chords driven charanams etc. Maybe I was too confident that I did not look for some counterpoints which IR seems to leave as a signature here and there in a song. Anyways, good job by rAjan. He does seem to like IR, the second song that comes up in youtube has a prelude just like pudhu pudhu arthangaL song.
Listening to this song, probably recorded by someone during a function. From the movie 'Ramarajyam'. Wonderful.

Probably Suddha Dhanyasi ragam.
Thank u suresh.......
Pollatha Madhana Paanam. Ilaiyaraaja can do any genre when the script demands it, but he prefers his own style normally. This song is a briliant composition set in lavani genre.
great pick!! it is similar in style to your recent pick of achadicha kaasa in the "manipulation thread". Song set in one genre which is casual and then ending with an intriguing orchestral piece. looks like you are on to something here... keep em coming...Quote:

Lyric writer Ilaiyaraaja too comes to the party here.
Fantastic lines and since he is the lyric writer here, conjures up a beautiful passage for the verses and the shrill flutes to strike up a counterpoint that really is magical.
Sadhana sargam - has the sargam in her name to go along with the sadhana which reflects on her crystal clear diction. Awesome singer and a well deserved national award for her...
Several heard recently but having a block writing about those. All gems vonly but I am unable to articulate.
- degam siragadikkum(naane raja naane mandhiri): overlooked in the presence of the mesmerising mayanginEn solla thayanginEn, the pleasures of this expression of first flush of love in a female with Chitra's youthful, energetic, apposite singing is a revealation
- isaiyil thodangudhamma(hey ram): what beauty! This is a Picasso painting, Beethoven Symphony, Thyagaraja composition, all rolled into one. And the lyrics by thalaivar himself are awesome too. Since Feeyar has written an incomparable short post on this, I will not attempt to.
- raasavE unnai vida mAttEn. What a soundscape Raja paints here. The second interlude with (what is that instrument) playing a fast sequence of notes as though a bee were buzzing about a flower extracting honey, followed by a soulful (synthetic) flute and Janaki humming "Aaaa" upto kikkI kinni endru vaNNa kiLi - sheer divinity. You are actually inside the heart of a woman in love at that point. The song, besides being a lovely melody, orchestrates to the point of minute emotions, and brings longing, flush of love, world around looking beautiful just in the flush of love, desparate sense of attachment and yearning to hold on to that love and a lot more. Who said music cannot substitute writing? No amount of writing can do justice to what this song accomplishes.
- heard sumam prati sumam again(after a long time..infact last time i wrote about it, I hadnt heard it in a long time, and this is the first time I am hearing after that also which means a pretty long time). What a divine beauty of a song! Give me this, and give me menaka, ramba and urvashi on the other hand(ofcourse youth versions of those - they must be several million years old now, no?) and I'll choose this song any day of the week
More later
Plum  , do you have the link for P_R's post link on this?Quote:

Plum,
Nice to see you back in action. Even if it is a Limited Edition :) Need to listen to 'rasave unnai vida maaten' and 'degam siragadikkum' in more detail now. And ofcourse, I can't forget your lovely post on 'sumam prati sumam sumam'.
While I understand your love for that song it true that by choosing the song over pretty maidens, you have proved you are no longer 'youth' :D :D
Engeyo poitteenga! Excellent post Plum. What a beauty of a song! Plum in front :DQuote:

The native/ethnic sounding part seems to have been added/twist provided to make the very stylish drums+guitar driven song more down to earth or appealing to the local audience (the risque lyrics also should :-) ). SPB sings with aplomb, like a real hero singing.
This combination of drums is what I miss in recent outputs, compared to these type of songs .. the rhythm is not very imaginative.
Gangai Amaran music sir, also suttufied from Telugu original I think :-)Quote:
