5:38 pm - June 21, 2014
The man of few words, the man of simplicity, Ilayathalapathy, actorVijayis been addressed by many such names but fondly is known asIlayathalapathy. Born to a film industry based parents S. A.Chandrasekhar, the director and his wifeShoba Chandrasekhar, a singer; it was easy for him to enter the cine world but to get himself a recognition part from being a director’s son wasn’t that easy.
Vijaystarted his career as a child artist produced by his father includes from Vetri to Idhu Engal Needhi, actorVijayhas spent 2 decades of life in the cine industry. He has gone through to several ups and downs in these 20 years but still he has made a special place for himself in the industry and in the audiences’ heart, let’s tour through few such movies which gave him a breakthrough of his career:
ActorVijaywas introduced to the industry as a male lead with the movie ‘Naalaiya Theerpu’ 1992 was written and directed by his fatherS A Chandrasekharand produced by his mother Shoba Chandrasekar. The movie was a box office disappointment andVijaywas not considered as an actor; public saw him only as a director’s son and couldn’t make a place in people’s heart and since then till 1996 he had a struggle period where he had to prove that he is in the industry cause of his talent and because he is son of a director but he failed to do so till‘Coimbatore Mappillai’. On the eve ofVijay 40we would take a look at his journey from a New Face to Thalaiva.
The first breakthrough-
The year 1996 brought him all good luck and success the movie‘Poove Unakkaga’written and directed by Vikraman and produced by R B Choudary became the first breakthrough of his career and got him his career’s first ever blockbuster flick. He proved his acting abilities, his dancing skills and made a place in the same audiences’ heart who criticized him earlier, after this movie there was no long a disappointment forVijay, he took stable and firm steps ahead to reach the place where he is today. AfterPoove Unakkaga, he did a series of story and flaunted his acting and dancing abilities in movies like‘Love Today’,once more, Nerukku Ner,etc.,
The first award-
In the year 1997, he signed a movie‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’which was remake of Fazil’s Malayalam movie‘Aniyathipravu’the commercial and box office success of this Malayalam flick inspired Fazil to remake a tamil version of the movie. After considering many lead stars of that time Fazil signedVijayas he was impressed by his performance in movies like‘Poove Unakkaga’, ‘Love Today’and‘Nerukku Ner’.‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’brought actor the first ever award of his life after a struggle of 5 long years, he was honoured with theTamil state film award for the best actor, ‘Cinema Express Award’ for Best Actor, Roja Duke’s Best Actor. The movie critics who just couldn’t stand him few years back greeted him with Praise garlands they said“Vijaybrought the calm character of love to existence.” Later the flick was remade in Hindi as‘Doli Saja Ke Rakhna’ starring Akshay Khanna and Jyothika.
The first new age love story-
By now actorVijaywas declared as a chocolate & the lover boy of the industry, in 2000 he decided to try a new concept in the romantic genre itself and thus opted to doS J Surya’s ‘khushi’withjyothikawhich was considered as a new age love story with a loads of drama and masala. This movie brought him an unbeatable mass appeal and stardom. The movie was commercial hit and made 200 days gross in the box office, in the same year he was honoured with the MGR award for Shining star. AfterKhushihe gave five back to back hits and reached to a higher level.
The first Commercial blockbuster-
Gilliin 2004 was again a remake of telugu Blockbuster‘Okkadu’directed by dharani, with this movie he collected an enormous female fan following, this also became his first family drama and commercial movie. The enhanced acting ability of actorVijaywas clearly visible with this movie the movie became the highest grossing Movie of the Tamil cinema, the critics rated the movie as 3.5-4, they called it a Blockbuster,‘ghilli’becomes a must watch andVijay’sperformance in‘Ghilli’fetch him three awards for best actor by Madras corporate club, Film Today best actor and movie was won several other awards. After thisVijaydid a series of family drama films like‘Thirupaachi’ Sivakasietc, After‘Gilli’ was called as the nextSuperstar.
later in the year 2007 ‘Pokkiri’ became another blockbuster hit but after‘Pokiri’he saw a series of disappointments though‘Vettaikaaran’and‘Kaavalan’, which was an average hit,‘Nanban’in 2012 directed by Shankar become his first ever film to be without an action masala and it was also considered as a comeback of his career.
The first Change over-
Vijayby now created a clichéd genre for him, which worked really well but was also bringing him down with an image that he isn’t a versatile actor, but once he is challenged for something he just breaks it down and that’s how A R Murugadoss’ ‘Thuppakki’2012 happened. Ilayathalapathy was showered with applauses by the critics they said “Most of the characters are made to look dumb asVijaysteals all the attention”, “a fully loaded festival package fromVijay”, “Vijayadds immense value to it by his performance”,“Vijayis stupendous in the role of an army officer. He brings a lot of energy to his character and thrills the audience in action sequences” and it went on, the movie was rated from 3.5-4. It was truly a breakthrough of Ilayathalapathy’s career.
We wish theIlayathalapathyall his success and a long and prosperous life ahead, Happy birthday Thalaivaa!

Just saw the picture a few pages ago taken in a cinema with the SUPERSTAR tag with Vijay's name in it.
Rajini will always be SS. Kamal will always be Ulaga Nayagan. Sivaji will always be Nadigar Thilagam. Vijay will always be Ilayathalapathy. He may take Rajini's spot but not his name. Sorry, major petpeeve of mine. It's just so frustrating that people don't get it.

Alrighty mighty....great work from all who posted on this thread the last week or so.
It was nostalgic and it was wonderful.
Thank you folks for the efforts and special thanks to Kumaran whose passion in posting updates on Vijay has always been amazing.
I am sure this day would be the beginning of something spectacular for Vijay.
Vijay, give atleast 10 more years to movies and movies only, work with all talented directors/scripts and continue entertaining us, the way you have been for the last 20 years.
I am sure there will be desperate souls/hypocrites trying to undermine and ridicule you with unwarranted 'Appa' taunts and abuses, but I am also sure that you will just keep going on and on and let your performance do all the talking.
Happy Birthday wishes to the undisputed king of commercial cinema, Illayathalapathy Vijay.
