No way, Backiaraj had nothing to do with tik tik tik (don't believe IMDB etc, I've followed this movie right from first ad till release, one of the asst directors has some association with my cousin).Quote:

Initial part of Mouna geethangaL was featured in Kumudam as a new-attempt-thodar-kadhai (with movie stills themselves instead of pics) and was immensely popular -ended as "meethi veLLiththiraiyil" - and definitely had a hand in the movie's success. (It became a trend later on, Kamal's Vikram was featured similarly in Kumudam as well, written by Sujatha).
Gangai Amaran was the MD and the songs were huge hits too(Janaki singing 'dAddie dAddie' in little-boy voice was a regular in radios and so were 'mookkuththippoo mElE' and 'mAsamO mArgazhi mAsam').
His next two movies had IR as MD but didn't do as phenomenally as mouna geethangaL (indRu pOi nALai vA & vidiyum varai kAththiru, both in the same 1981 I think).
By this time, there was no BR-BkR working together. BR had a few sumArs / flops (NMP / KE / N) after BkR left him, till the sleazy alaigaL Oyvathillai changed his fortunes.
There were many, including mags, who started attributing "more-than-necessary-percentage-credit" to BkR for prior movies of BR also, like 16V / KPR / SR / PV.
It was pretty obvious that the emotional BR was unhappy about it (though BkR kept referring to him as "gurunAthar") and there were even rumors that the two weren't in good terms, jealousy of the older man etc during the period 1980-83.
andha 7 nAtkaL too came out in the same 1981 with huge success (MSV music, songs were hits) and BkR's glory totally outshone BR at this point of time.
BR's Tick Tick Tick came in the same 1981 (my first year in college, in the new "Sona" theatre in Trichy) and wasn't a success, despite the huge talk about the Kamal movie thanks to Madhavi's bikini stills. OTOH, Backiyaraj was riding among successes.
Next year -1982 - he had dArling^3 (real-life-love developed with PoornimA J and married her after his 1st wife died) and this movie was a success too, with Shankar-Ganesh as MD. (Oh nenjE nee thAn). Same year brought a much bigger hit in TNP - the first mega hit of BkR with IR as MD and songs immensely popular.
BkR's peak was in 1983 with the biggest career hit - murungakkAi mudichchu (IR / AVM / Oorvashi). He appeared invincible at that point of time, as a director / hero / writer.
He has never tasted such scale of a success ever after as a hero / director / writer.
His re-association with BR was in dhAvaNikkanavugaL (1984) where BR acted in a scene as "director". It was a BkR movie where BR had only the guest appearance and apparently any "problems" between them have evaporated. Meanwhile, BR had success with his maN vAsanai, after a terrible flop vAlibamE vA vA.
oru kaidhiyin diary happened in 1985 where BkR once again wrote for BR and was a hit. (I think BkR remade it in Hindi with Amitabh as Akhri rAsthA and not BR).
So, DK was before OKD but it was a BkR movie with BR as guest actor.
OKD was the real re-association, BR the director and BkR the writer.
Based on current BO comparisons, some may wonder how reliable are the above statistics (relative hit levels of movies).
These weren't based on Rupees/PaisE accounts :-)
Typically, most movies got released in similar# of theaters those days (even big towns like Trichy had a single theater release / Chennai corp limits had 4/5 only). There weren't huge variations in # of seats (Madurai Thangam / Trichy Kalaiarangam and other 70mm kinds were exceptions and not the norm).
So, BO comparisons were based on 50 days / 100 days / silver jubilee etc - in how many cities - and such only :-) and from dinathanthi kind of ads in memory.
Also, the impact of movie personalities in TN (again "those days") should not always be measured in terms of roovA-naiyA paisA / BO etc. (It's even more applicable in the case of music when one talks about "hit" rate).
It should be measured in the amount of "sensation" it created among the general public. How much time it occupied in their conversations / what new "trends" it started in the community (big speakers in village tea stalls / insistence of public going in buses with cassettes / mushrooming of recording centers / MD getting pics on wall posters etc, for e.g.)
That way, at least for a year or so (peak during the mundhAnai mudichchu days) - Backiaraj had possibly the #1 rating in TN among all cine-personalities, including star actors (even MGR declared that he was his vArisu).
