app,
Yes, some of those 'rapapaa' sounds take the sheen off the songs but the songs are good songs. I keep listening to 'thennipaayum' quite often. A very well made song. Especially the way he suddenly drops in the anupallavi is superb ('neela vinnin') . Rather than the recording or synth issues, I wish Raja somehow either gets rid of these 'rapappaa' sounds or make them more contemporary so that people are not put off by it. (Ofcourse people like me will anyway ignore it and listen to the songs but I am sure it spoils the song a bit for many people)
Here is the link to 'thenni paayum':

listening to an album which i would rate as part of IR's top 10!
"Abhinandana" !!!!!!
speechless ! the bass line, combined with the outrageously innovative melodies with stunning interludes make this an absolutely unforgettable album!
to this day, it is 22 long years since I heard this album first time in Hyderabad on a lazy afternoon! and it has NEVER FAILED to affect me the way it did that first time around!
fantabulous! how the heck does IR manage to make this album so contemporary ?? is it the bass line that makes it this rich and lush and complete ??!! WOW !
intha album irrukkara feelingla oru 10% NEPV albumla kidhacchidhunnaaley podhum yenakku!

forewarning reg the video - pls close your eyes and only listen to the song, and watch it only at your own risk!
and now "Attention everybody" from Coolie no.1 - how does this man manage to infuse melody in the charanam after beginning with an almost tuneless pallavi - the way the melody springs out at "eppudu nee vasam" (from 1:59 to 2:10 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IgUAY5Zvukin) the first charanam! so beautiful!
and the second interlude is freakout percussion following "illa aithey podhaa seelam" (from 2:37 to 3:10) - percussion, guitar, brass (?) and what not !! and then back to the breezy charanam and again the lilting "maguvaa magaada anipinchaali" part (3:29 to 3:40) !! wow!!

I've posted a little earlier about cutting 3 CD's with hits of post-IR MD's (per preferences of kids) but inserting an IR song or two in each of them to help myself as antidote.
The song sequences in one of them- that got played in the van yesterday - was like this :
-adiyE kolluthE (vAraNam Ayiram)
-yellE lamA (7Am aRivu)
-vizhi moodi yOsiththAl (ayan)
-andha arabikkadalOram (bombay)
-chikku bukku rayilu (gentleman)
-OyAyiyE AyiyE (ayan)
Now came my antidote :-)
vA vA pakkam vA (thanga magan)
What I found interesting is that with that excellent audio system in the minivan, this song that's almost 30 years old, sounds as modern / contemporary as all those others listed above!
Including the recording / sounds
(BTW, all these were in "reconstructed CD format" via Windows media player, using the tamilwire.com MP3's...)

Out of curiosity, I've included 'yArO yArukkuL ingu yArO' of YSR too in one of the CDs.
Sung by SPB-KSC
If YSR sticks to good singers, he can be a decent MD!

Just heard two completely different songs from my collection.
1. "Vidhaitha Vidhai thaLiraai ezhundhu arumbi varum pozhudhu"
"விதைத்த விதை தளிராய் எழுந்து அரும்பி வரும் பொழுது "
A rare gem in my opinion, this song starts with an energetic (and long) prelude and flows with some surprising twists and turns, merging multiple genres, using a predominantly acoustic sound. It appears to have been composed when IR was in a wacky frame of mind.
Sung by Deepan Chakravarthy and B. S. Sasirekha, from the film, Ethanai KONam, ethanai PArvai.
2. The second song is the very popular, 'EngengO sellum en eNNangaL" 'எங்கெங்கோ செல்லும் என் எண்ணங்கள்" from the film Pattakathi Bhairavan!
Come to think of it, such heavenly songs have been gifted by IR to such atrocious movies, which most importantly didn't do any justice to the song itself, with their lousy visualisation/ choreography.
The prelude, the mellifluous melody, the superb singing by SPB and Janaki and of course the divine interludes, especially the scale change in the second interlude, wow! You don't want the song to end. Such songs have a mood-uplifting quality, regardless of which culture you come from and which language you understand.
Found this Youtube link. It also features a short BGM that appears prior to the song, which is a bonus of course.
