Bahubali, directed by SS Rajamouli, is a big, sweeping epic that runs for close to 2 hours and 40 minutes. Spanning generations, going back and forth between the present and the past, alternating between vastly contrasting landscapes, it’s an ambitious work from a visionary filmmaker who skillfully blends a tale of old school palace politics with modern VFX to deliver a consistently watchable blockbuster.
Smuggled out of the kingdom of Mahishmati as a baby and raised by tribals in a village located at the foot of a waterfall, Shiva (Telugu star Prabhas) is the Bahubali of the film’s title, a human with god-like strength and valor. After repeated attempts to scale the mountains and climb up to the top of the waterfall, Shiva finally achieves his goal, only to encounter Avanthika (Tamannah), a female warrior and member of a rebel group.
Their frankly silly romantic track – in which he distracts her with a snake while tattooing her shoulder, or undresses her systematically while giving her a makeover – is the weakest link in the film, stretching out an already overlong first half. Avanthika leads Shiva to his destiny beyond the walls of Mahishmati, where despotic king Bhallal Dev (Rana Dagubatti) is installing a 50-foot gold statue of himself.
Rajamouli gives us a terrific interval point, and the film moves briskly in its second half, when it goes into flashback mode to reveal a familiar story of family conflict within the royal household, and Shiva’s true identity. The piece de resistance of the film is a roughly 30-minute war sequence achieved through a combination of special effects and thrilling in-camera shots. You’re riveted by the action, and by the drama that unfolds on the battlefield, leading to an explosive finale. Prabhas and Rana, each flexing his tree trunk-sized biceps, puts up a great show.
Save for a few unconvincing bits, including an escape from an oncoming avalanche that looks completely fake, the VFX in Bahubali are more sophisticated than what we’ve seen in most Indian films. Art director Sabu Cyril employs them niftily to give depth and scale to his magnificent sets, and cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar gives us beautiful vistas combining the real and the computer-generated more-or-less seamlessly.
But the film’s secret sauce is Rajamouli’s expert handling of the simple but dependable screenplay, his ability to whip up rousing moments, and his skill at mining emotions from even clichéd scenarios. He is aided by an impressive cast who’re at the top of their game, including Ramya Krishna as just queen Sivagami, and Sathyaraj as Katappa, loyal senapati of Mahishmati. Rana Dagubatti has a strong presence, and invokes fear by simply bulging those eyes. Prabhas lets his hulking physicality do the bulk of work for him, but brings much by way of performance through his sheer intensity.
From the tropical landscapes of Avatar and the bloody battles of The Lord of The Rings films, to the images from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana that it evokes, Rajamouli’s film hat-tips to its various influences without ever stealing from any. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Bahubali given that I watched a Hindi dubbed version of the original Telugu film. Rajamouli is indeed a visual storyteller, and he brings the curtains down on this first part of his two-film saga with a curious cliffhanger. I can’t wait for Part 2, which comes next year.
I’m going with four out of five for Bahubali. It’s exactly what a blockbuster should be. Hugely entertaining, without ever being dumb.

Review: SS Rajamouli's BAAHUBALI - THE BEGINNING Is A World Class Epic

The word epic gets thrown around a lot these days. Thanks to meme culture, the word has been misused and overused so often that it has lost much of its meaning. However, for a film experience like S.S. Rajamouli's Baahubali - The Beginning, there is no more appropriate term. This film, the first of two planned features, does nothing by half measures. Every aspect of Baahubali - The Beginning is oversized, however, where that may bloat some films with less judicious aspirations, Rajamouli makes sure that every moment counts, and I've never seen a two-and-a-half hour film with so many clearly memorable moments.
Recounting the story of Baahubali - The Beginning is a bit of an exercise in futility, mostly because it's only half told by the time the end credits roll. However, in short, it's an origin story, the classic Hero's Journey, as described by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). The hero in this case is the humble yet inexplicably driven Shivudu, played by Telugu film star Prabhas with a dopey smile and shoulders like an ox. His journey seems to mark all of the phases of the monomyth, the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, the supernatural aid, etc... I get the feeling that if there are parts of the myth that aren't addressed in the film, it's only because Rajamouli has wisely tucked them into Baahubali - The Conclusion, due in 2016.
Along the way, Shivudu encounters strange new worlds about which he's only dreamed, as well as romance, action, and revenge. While Baahubali - The Beginning hews fairly tight to the established and expected structure of Indian masala filmmaking, Rajamouli's singular talent is making these concepts and tropes which are identifiably Indian, and even specifically South Indian, and molding them to fit his own vision, which is light years broader. The Tollywood veteran will see all of the tropes and definitive markers of that industry's patterns, but the newbie will look right past the formula to the meat of the film, which is an exceptionally tricky balancing act that no Telugu filmmaker has yet mastered. None other than Rajamouli.
Indian regional films are typically so culturally specific that outsiders are repelled by them almost immediately, with inside joke after inside joke whizzing over their heads and leaving the uninitiated viewer feeling flat at best, and alienated at worst. Rajamouli's talent, apart from his remarkable imagination (which we'll address later), is making films that work for both his home audiences and those abroad who are adventurous enough to take the plunge. The last great example of this was 2012's Eega, a film for which I have shown no hesitation in expressing my utter and complete devotion. That film was recognizably south Indian, but something in it was so universal that it was able to play to appreciative audiences in festivals around the world with no problem.
Baahubali - The Beginning's most obvious and acknowledged influences come from Hindu mythological stories, though the film itself isn't slavish to the religious conventions like many Tollywood productions. This arena is not a new one for Rajamouli, in fact, he's been dipping his toes in the period film waters for years. First there was the socio-fantasy film Yamadonga (2007) starring Jr. NTR, in which a young petty thief tricks the God of Death into relinquishing his throne. However, it was the next major effort, 2009's Magadheera where Rajamouli truly stretched his creative legs. He created an entire world for an extended flashback in this classic reincarnation story starring Ram Charan, mostly known in the western world as the film where the jeep jumps into a flying helicopter with predictably explosive results. Baahubali - The Beginning feels like the culmination of those experiments, only with even greater results.
Even though Baahubali - The Beginning is clearly a product of a career that has been building to this point, it's important to note that the film connects with its audience on a more visceral level. 99% of you will not have seen Magadheera or Yamadonga, but you will have seen something like John Milius's Conan the Barbarian, Ron Howard's Willow, John Woo's Red Cliff, or Peter Jackson's adaptations of Tolkien. These are the kinds of worlds that Rajamouli's film inhabits. Whereas the fictional settings of those English language films are mostly identifiable as medieval Europe, Rajamouli sets his film during a similarly unnamed time period in what is identifiably India. Apart from the change in scenery and language, the films are more kin to each other than one might expect. We get the parental issues of Conan, the reluctant heroism and impish charm of Willow's Val Kilmer, and the outsized scope and battle sequences of The Lord of the Rings or Red Cliff. However, with Baahubali - The Beginning, we get something more, a true heart and soul, rather than what is often empty manipulation.
While Baahubali - The Beginning may not match up to the adrenalin output of George Miller's Mad Max Fury Road, it's not entirely out of that ball park in several ways. Both films rely heavily on worlds constructed almost entirely within the minds of their creators, though Miller has had almost 35 years to build his and Rajamouli did it in two. Another truly impressive, and progressive, trait of both films is their treatment of women as not only action heroes, they are also widely seen and acknowledged as figures of authority. Granted, Tamannah as the warrior Avanthika, does fall for Shivudu even as she's trying to kill him, the character of Ramya Krishnan's Sivagami is more than able to strike fear into the hearts of her enemies and friends (when needed). No one will talk about this film as a feminist action spectacular with Prabhas in the lead, but it certainly puts a solid foot forward in that arena.
Indian films, in general, have gained a nasty (and not undeserved) reputation as bloated and too long for their own good. At two hours and thirty nine minutes, it seems like it'd be easy to pin those labels on Baahubali - The Beginning as well, however, the film wastes not a single frame. Even during those moments when it feels as though the film may be meandering, it is for a purpose. One thing that truly separates this film from its English language spiritual forefathers is its conviction to create a world that feels lived in and real. The best way that Rajamouli does this is by developing his characters into people to which the audience can relate. Each of their actions relies upon an experience in their past, and Rajamouli wants to put that background knowledge in the hands of the audience so that in the end, these are our friends, and it works beautifully, even as the film stretches beyond the comfort zone of most filmgoers.
The structure of Baahubali - The Beginning even manages to mimic the structure of many south Indian films, but especially Rajamouli's own Magadheera. Even though Magadheera was split between the modern day and the 17th century, its origin-flashback-conclusion structure is something that Rajamouli recycles to even greater effect in Baahubali - The Beginning. I've complained more than once about the incessant and ridiculously long flashback sequences in Indian films, however, this film makes it work, even better than in Magadheera. Westerners might be put off by the mention of an hour-long flashback sequence, but trust me when I tell you that it's worth every minute.
It isn't only the structure of the film that works incredibly well, it's also the execution, which could have been disastrous. With a film like this, on a scale never even attempted in Indian Cinema, the probability of spectacular failure in terms of technical execution should have been incredibly high. However, Rajamouli is one of India's greatest trailblazers in terms of incorporating visual FX into his worlds in a photorealistic way. Tamil Cinema's Shankar is a visual wiz, but his work is based on cartoonish exaggeration, Rajamouli wants it to feel real. It felt real enough in Eega that audiences around the world sympathized with a housefly. The FX in Baahubali - The Beginning are on the cusp of being on par with Hollywood's finest, but here Rajamouli manages to use his FX to greater effect than Hollywood typically does.
Rajamouli's reliance on FX is not to distract the audience, it is to augment the reality that he has created. Anything that he can build practically, he builds, we saw that in the behind the scenes gallery we posted back in May. When Rajamouli's imagination extends beyond those earthly limits, he nudges the truth a bit with some help from his FX team. Is it always perfect? No, there are a few shots where the FX didn't hold up 100%, but I certainly found myself more enamored with the story than wondering how they accomplished any particular shot in the film. Isn't that what visual effects are designed to do, anyway, to disappear in service of the story? Mission accomplished.
What it all boils down to is that SS Rajamouli is a director with a heart as big as a house, and ambitions bigger than you can imagine. His films redefine what the scope of Indian Cinema can mean, both in terms of this kind of epic story as well as who the audience for this largely regional cinema is. Baahubali - The Beginning is a film for the child in everyone, the one who wants to believe in heroes and derring-do, and for the adult in everyone who wants to believe that they can be the hero of their own story, that they just need the right motivation. I've waited all summer for a great film, and Baahubali - The Beginning is the first film that feels to me like it hits all of those notes. When Hollywood comes knocking on Rajamouli's door, don't say I didn't tell you first.

SS Rajamouli has made what is India's answer to Hollywood mythological epics. This film is on the same level as a Troy or Alexander, only Rajamouli's vision far exceeds anything ever tried even in Hollywood. But to limit the appraisal of Bahubali to just studio blockbusters from the West would be unfair. In truth, this film is unlike any other Indian movie. Its level of grandeur is only rivalled by its sense of achievement. Watching this film is an exhilarating experience. It makes you believe that anything is possible.
The story, like any Indian mythology, deals with a rightoeus king. You're introduced to Shivudu (Prabhas) at the very beginning when he's just a few days old. Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan) is on the run, trying to protect Shivudu from the King's guards. In what is reminiscent of Lord Krishna's story, she gives her own life but surrenders the young child to a caretaker family. As Shivudu grows up some unknown calling drives him to climb a treacherous water fall. When he eventually scales the mountain face, his true lineage, the love of his life and the very purpose of his existence is revealed to him. Bahubali's tagline is called 'The Beginning', naturally this is supposed to be the introduction to the lead character and his story. There's a second part coming soon, which will reveal the climax of Shivudu's story. But Rajamouli should've just released the two parts together, in one long but epic film. Because the open ending in Bahubali does have a bitter after taste. The story just stops abruptly. Leaving the viewer with a high and dry feeling. It would've been better to wade through to the end.
Much before the anti-climactic end, you have a whole saga that explains who Shivudu is and the awesome back story of his father Amrendra Bahubali, a great warrior and king. There are epic battles, there are mind blowing scenes of CGI. There are locations that mesmerise you with the surreal beauty of nature. But it's all held together by a run-of-the-mill reincarnation and revenge drama. The exact story we've all heard of a million times since the Mahabharata. That is really the Achilles's heel of Bahubali.
But what the story lacks in originality, the director makes up for with his audacity. Rajamouli's vision and execution is beyond brilliant. He may have a stellar cast, but Rajamouli is the actual hero of this movie. The man with a vision to show our culture's history in all its glory. The visuals and the ideas at work in Bahubali are truly herculean. You will have never seen such striking scenes. The action choreography, the sets, the locations, the characters, the fights and the settings are all magnanimous. They'll sweep you off your feet. The man who thought all that up deserves a standing ovation.
The CGI allows Rajamouli to execute his ideas. Some of which are really far fetched and creative. Scenes of Prabhas climbing the mountains, or of Tamannaah running through the woods, or that of the action packed avalanche or even the stunning battle scenes with Rana Daggubati are a pure delight to watch. Yet on occasions, the CGI leaves a little room for improvement. The CGI recreated animals like the bull or an elephant don't quite look authentic. But those are just momentary glitches. Rest of the way, this 2.5 hours CGI fiesta impresses you beyond measure.
Just as swashbuckling are the performances by the cast. Prabhas and Rana Daggubati as the hero and anti-hero lead the charge. Their hulking demeanour and larger-than-life screen presence holds your attention. Tamannaah, Anushka Shetty and Ramya Krishnan all lend able to support to the two leading men. Veterans Sathyaraj and Nasser showcase the best of their talents too. Their combined efforts infuse the wizardry of Rajamouli with actual human emotions.
Bahubali is truly an epic experience. Had the story not been so jaded, this would've gone into the history books as an all-time classic. But that's not the case. It has its set of storytelling flaws, but even those are overshadowed by Rajamouli's ideas and execution. This is definitely worthy of being India's most expensive film. It's a definite movie watching experience.

Right from its opening frames, ‘Baahubali’ holds out many promises: of adventure and romance, love and betrayal, valour and weakness. And it delivers magnificently on each of them. This is full-tilt ,fully-assured filmmaking of a very high order. ‘Baahubali’ is simply spectacular.
Many films have scale and spectacle. ‘Baahubali’ also has a story. And enough hooks to keep us engrossed through its close to two-and-a-half hours of running time. You can see S S Rajamouli’s varied influences in places : James Cameron-like dreamy vistas of hill, waterfall and greenery, Ang Lee’s flying-through-the-air-acrobatics, Peter Jackson’s stretching-out-for-miles crowded battlefields, J R R Tolkien’s plug-ugly trolls who talk in guttural tongues, many characters and situations from Mahabharat and Ramayan. And, in a Bollywood hat-tip, to the long-suffering mother in ‘Karan Arjun’!
But Rajamouli makes sure that the references do not overwhelm his epic, which has a beleaguered kingdom, kings and queens, faithful slaves, jealous brothers, beautiful women and strong men. And the strongest of them, ‘Baahubali’, which means, literally, ‘strong of arm’.

Strapping Shiva (Prabhas) has a strange fascination for a faraway mountain peak, where he can see the outlines of a castle. His attempts at leaping across cliffs first leads him to the beauteous Avantika (Tamannaah) and her group of rebels, and then to the distant kingdom which has the tied-up-in-chains-for-twenty-five-years Devasena (Anushka Shetty), suffering the indignities heaped upon her by the cruel King Bhallala (Rana Daggubati) and his father (Nasser).
Rajamouli doesn’t bother giving us a date for the film. It is closest to a ‘period’, part myth, part everything else. Which is a good thing because we don’t go looking for parity in costume and architecture. It is set in the director’s own imagination, and what a wonderful thing that is, full of gorgeous visuals (just those waterfalls make you feel like you’ve been drenched), and a story-telling technique that eschews unnecessary sophistication just for the sake of it, but is robustly elegant all the same, and keeps things ticking space.

Prabhas plays it just right: his Baahubali has a sprightly ‘moochh’, and is mightily muscular. So is Daggubati, whose spread of shoulder and chest is even more so. The women step in to be fiery and authoritative, as well as, sigh, submissive. When Ramya thunders, she is quite something; Tamannaah displays a mean kick before simpering, and the ladies step aside to let the men, and ‘maar-dhaad’, occupy centre-stage.
I have to say that I dread long-drawn skirmishes between armour-clad armies (having suffered through Jackson’s never-ending battles) because they turn so turgid and dull so fast, but the battle-scenes in ‘Baahubali’ are completely engrossing. There’s just one place that I tuned out, and that was a ‘romantic’ song which feels unnecessary and superfluous to the proceedings. But it is quickly over, and we are back to the action.

Rajamouli’s ‘Magadheera’ posted notice of a director worth watching: I saw the film much after its release, and was impressed by the re-creation of the past ( the present, full of silly banter between a standard-procedure hero-heroine, was same-old). And then came ‘Eega’, a terrific, fun-filled tale of a vengeful fly. With ‘Baahubali’, Rajamouli has combined his gifts, of staying firmly in the past, and filling it with heightened drama and colour-drenched visuals.
I can’t wait for the second part, which, we are told, will be out in 2016.

நாம் பார்த்து ரசித்த மன்னர்கதைகளின் புதியவடிவமாய் வந்திருக்கிறது பாகுபலி. இதற்குமுன் பார்த்த படங்களை விடப் பிரமாண்டமாகவே இருக்கிறது என்பதுதான் இதன்பலம். ஆட்சியதிகாரத்தைக் கைப்பற்ற நடக்கும் சகோதர யுத்தத்தின் காரணமாக அரண்மனையை விட்டு காட்டுக்குள் வந்துவிட்ட பிரபாஸ் மீண்டும் அரண்மனைக்குச் சென்றவுடன் என்னவெல்லாம் நடக்கிறது? என்பதைத்தான் நெஞ்சம் அதிரச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள்.
தொடக்கத்திலேயே மிகப்பெரிய அருவியின் முன்னால், முதுகில் அம்பு தைத்தநிலையில் கைக்குழந்தையுடன் ரம்யாகிருஷ்ணன் வரும் காட்சியிலேயே படத்துக்குள் நம்மை இழுத்துவிடுகிறார்கள். ரம்யாவின் மறைவும் அந்த நேரத்திலும் அந்தக்குழந்தையைக் காப்பாற்றிவதோடு அது எங்கிருந்து வந்தது? என்பதை விரலசைவிலேயே சுட்டிக்காட்டி மரணிப்பதும் படத்தின் போக்கை நமக்குச் சொல்லிவிடுகிறது.
ஆதிவாசிகள் கூட்டத்தில் வளர்ந்திருந்தாலும் நாயகன் பிரபாஸ், மன்னர் பரம்பரையைச் சேர்ந்தவன் என்பதைச் சுட்டுகிற மாதிரியே காட்சிகள் இருக்கின்றன. அவர் எங்கிருந்து விழுந்தாலும் அவர் உடம்பில் ஒரு கீறலும் விழாது என்பது உட்பட மிகைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் இருப்பினும், பிரபாஸின் உடற்கட்டும், அலட்சியப்புன்னகையுடன் ஒவ்வொரு சவாலையும் எதிர்கொள்ளும் விதமும் அந்தக்காட்சிகளுக்கு நியாயம் செய்கிற மாதிரி இருக்கின்றன.
சிவலிங்கத்தை அவர் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு போய் அருவியில் வைக்கும் காட்சி சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு. அவ்வளவு பெரிய மலையருவியை பிரபாஸ் ஏறிக்கடக்க முயன்று தோற்பதும், அதன்பின்னர் தமன்னா திரையில் வந்ததும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து மலையருவியைக் கடக்கும் காட்சிகள், கண்ணின் கடைப்பார்வை காதலியர் காட்டிவிட்டால் மண்ணில் குமரருக்கு மாமலையும் ஒர் கடுகாம் என்கிற பாரதிதாசனின் வரிகளின் காட்சி வடிவமாக அமைந்திருக்கின்றன.
துரோகத்தால் வீழ்த்தப்பட்டதோடு திறந்தவெளிச்சிறையில் சங்கிலிகளால் பிணைக்கப்பட்டு கைதியாக இருக்கும் மன்னரின் மனைவியை மீட்கும் போராளிக்கூட்டத்தில் ஒரு போராளியாய் நடித்திருக்கும் தமன்னாவுக்கு இந்தப்படம் நற்பெயரைத் தரும். போராளியாகத் துடிப்புடன் செய்லபடுவதோடு பிரபாஸோடு காதலில் கசிந்துருகும் காட்சிகளில் ரசிகர்களைக் கவருவார் என்பது நிச்சயம். ஓரிருகாட்சிகள்தாம் என்றாலும் பிரபாஸ், தமன்னா காதலில் இளமைப்போதை நிறைந்திருக்கிறது.
ஓரிரு காட்சிகளில் வயதான கைதியாக அனுஷ்காவைக் காட்டிப் பெரும்பாவம் செய்துவிட்டார் ராஜமௌலி. (அடுத்த பாகத்தில் அதற்குப் பிராயச்சித்தம் செய்துவிடுவார் என்று நம்பலாம்)காயங்களும் தழும்புகளும் கொண்ட ஒப்பனையோடு, என் மகன் வருவான் என்று மிகநம்பிக்கையாகச் சொல்லும் அனுஷ்காவும் வரவேற்புப் பெறுகிறார்.
பல்லாளதேவராக நடித்திருக்கும் ராணாவின் அறிமுகக்காட்சி, ஜோதாஅக்பரில் யானையோடு மோதும் ஹிருத்திக்ரோஷனை நினைவு படுத்தினாலும் அதைவிடச் சிறப்பாகக் காட்டெருமையோடு மோதுகிறார் ராணா. அவருடைய நூறடி உயரச்சிலையை நிர்மாணிக்கும் காட்சியும் அதற்குள் பிரபாஸ் வருவதும் சிலிர்ப்பு.
ராஜவிசுவாசியாக வருகிற சத்யராஜ், நன்றாக நடித்திருக்கிறார், பாகுபலீலீலீ என்று வேகமாகப் போய் மண்டியிடும் காட்சியிலும் இறுதியில் வருகிற போர்க்காட்சியிலும் சபாஷ் சொல்லவைக்கிறார் சத்யராஜ். ராணாவின் அப்பாவாக நடித்திருக்கும் நாசர், எள்ளல் சிரிப்பிலும் கடுப்புப் பார்வையிலுமே நடித்து தன் இருப்பைச் சிறப்பாகக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்.

இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு வருகிற போர்க்காட்சிகள், இதுவரை வந்த போர்க் காட்சிகளின் உச்சம் என்று சொல்லுமளவுக்குக் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஹெலிகாப்டர் மேலிருக்கும் பெரிய விசிறி போல தேரின் முன்னால் கத்திகளை விசிறிபோல் சுற்றவிட்டுக்கொண்டு ராணா வரும்போது நாசரோடு சேர்ந்து ரசிகர்களும் ரசிக்கிறார்கள். இன்னொரு பக்கம் ஒற்றைக்குதிரையில் பிரபாஸின் சாகசங்களும் வியக்கவைக்கின்றன.
அப்பாவி மக்களைக் கேடயமாக எதிரிப்படைகள் பயன்படுத்துகிற நேரத்தில் பிரபாஸ் எடுக்கும் முடிவு உண்மையான வீரர்களுக்கான இலக்கணம். போர்க்காட்சிகள் பனைமரங்களுக்கு இடையே நடப்பது போல் காட்டியிருப்பது படத்தை தமிழுக்கு நெருக்கமாக்கிக் காட்டுகிறது.
சாகறதுக்குள்ள அவனைப் பார்த்துவிடமாட்டோமா என்று நீயும், இன்னொருமுறை அவனைக் கொல்லவேண்டும் என்று நானும் ஆசைப்படுகிறோம், இரண்டுமே நிறைவேறாத ஆசைகள் என்று ராணா பேசுவது உட்பட கார்க்கியின் வசனங்கள் படத்துக்குப் பலம் சேர்த்திருக்கின்றன.
கீரவாணியின் இசையில் உருவான பாடல்கள் நன்றாகக் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருந்தாலும் படத்தின் வேகத்துக்குத் தடைபோடுகின்றன. பின்னணிஇசையில் அவர் திரைக்கதைக்கு இணையாகப் பயணித்திருக்கிறார் என்று சொல்லலாம்.
ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் செந்தில்குமாரின் உழைப்பும் சிறப்பும் ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும் தெரிகிறது. மலையருவி, மகிழ்மதி அரண்மனை, போர்க்களம் ஆகிய எல்லா இடங்களிலும் அவருடைய பங்கு மிகப்பெரிது.
ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும் கடும் உழைப்பு தெரிவதும், காதல், வீரம், கோபம் உள்ளிட்ட உணர்வுகளைக் காட்சியழகோடு சேர்த்துக்கொடுத்திருப்பதும் இயக்குநர் ராஜமௌலியின் பலம். மையக்கதை புதிதல்ல என்றாலும் காட்சிகள் வடிவமைப்பில் ரசிகர்களுக்குப் புதியஅனுபவங்களைக் கொடுத்திருக்கும் ராஜமௌலியைப் பாராட்டலாம்.
கடைசியில் சத்யராஜ் பேசும் வசனத்தின் மூலம், இவ்வளவு பெரியபடத்தை இது முன்னோட்டம்தான் கதை இனிமேல்தான் இருக்கு என்பது போலச் சொல்வதற்கு ஒரு துணிவு வேண்டும். அது ராஜமௌலி குழுவினருக்கு இருக்கிறது.

Once upon a time, there lived a mother. Her hair was matted and grey. Her eyes were wild and bloodshot. Her chants were wild and hopeful. “Mera beta aayega…,” she kept saying, while shuffling around. Her feet were in thick chains for 25 years. It sounds a little bit like Karan Arjun, but this is SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali. And despite how clichéd some of its elements may be, this film is the work of South Indian cinema’s wildest imagination and it takes steps towards of mythic proportions in Indian fantasy.
Baahubali is about sheer, jaw-dropping, hypnotic spectacle. Released simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, the film’s budget is a whopping Rs 200 crores, making it the most expensive film made in India. Going by the sheer grandeur, it is little wonder that Karan Johar snapped up the Hindi version.
The hero’s real name is Shiva (Prabhas Raju). He has the strength to carry a huge Shiva lingam and to pull up a 450-foot tall, gold statue. He can dislodge huge boulders and use one as a luge when there’s an avalanche chasing him and his lady love. No wonder then that the greatest warrior of the land does a Michael Jackson-esque slide on his knees and bows before Shiva with a worshipful cry of “Baahubali!”

But first, Shiva must show off his awesomeness. So he makes the perilous climb up to the kingdom of Mahismati to woo Avanthika (Tamannaah). She is a vision in white. No, she is not Raj Kapoor’s Mandakini, but a wuxia-inspired heroine, beautifully framed in captivating shots under waterfalls. When Shiva does find her, she attacks him with a sword. This leads to a dance-like duel, which begins with him disrobing her and ends with her falling in love. Naturally.
But Shiva has more ordained for him than simply getting the girl. He doesn’t know this, but the old woman waiting for her son is actually his mother, Devasena (Anushka Shetty).
Devasena is held captive by the well-oiled, evil king, Bhallala Dev(Rana Daggubati), whom she had once rejected and who just happens to be Shiva’s uncle. Bhallala delights in torturing Devasena. She collects wood for his pyre.
Initially, Baahubali works like a musical, setting Shiva and Avanthika’s romance in the most outlandish of lands and exotic sets. The real fun and action begins afterwards, when Shiva is told of his father, Amarendra Baahubali and the plot rewinds to a world of palace intrigue and war.
We see a majestic Sivagami refuse throne but rule like queen, while sitting on the regent’s seat with two babies suckling under her pallu. One is her own son, Bhallala. The other is Shiva’s father. Years roll on, the boys grow into well-matched, powerful princes. A ferocious tribal enemy attacks and a spectacular battle follows.
This is the point where you forget the story. It’s not weak, but it doesn’t really matter Watch Baahubali for the moves. The hero gets on a horse in the middle of a crowded battlefiend, the camera takes the shot up-close, and it’s VFX techno power at its most awesome. The soundtrack by M.M. Kreem, one of his finest, sets the mood and matches the soaring, balletic action movements.
Action, camera, VFX, sound – that’s Baahubali’s magic formula. Particularly during the war with the primitive and terrible Kalakeyas (for whom Rajamouli has concocted a new language. Take that Dothraki-fans), the technological sophistication is worth applause. The camera plays eagle to reveal an enormous aerial view of men on horses racing against men on feet. A stunning side angle shot of silver arrows in a line sets the ball rolling. The background score continues to add to the magical visual display.
And there are the haunting shots that Rajamouli weaves into his storytelling, like the sight of a headless body stumbling on a cliff, against a backdrop of apocalyptic thunderclouds.
But really, forget the story. In Baahubali, watch the moves.

STORY: A baby boy is miraculously found alive in the middle of a river by a few villagers. They raise him as their own. Named Shiva (Prabhas), the boy grows up to be an adventurous commoner until his past comes back to haunt him. Turns out, Shiva is royalty and heir to the Mahishmati kingdom. Son of the noble king Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas in a dual role) and queen Devasena (Anushka Shetty), he must now fight the evil king Bhallala Deva (Rana Daggubati), who tortured his parents and forcefully seized their kingdom.
REVIEW: Touted as one of the most expensive films to be made in India, this highly anticipated part one of the two-part period epic, manages to enthrall you with its sheer scale and grandeur. Painstakingly made, paying acute attention to detail for the minutest of sound and visuals, Rajamouli (Eega, Magadheera) , who spent three years making this ambitious film ensures that the larger-than-life execution matches his grandiose vision. Though this swashbuckling adventure relies heavily on CGI and VFX, it doesn't lack emotional resonance. It manages to be much more than a blood-soaked romp. The heart of the film lies in the simple thought that good is mightier than evil.
However, the elaborate battle-scene climax makes the film a spectacular watch nonetheless. Very rarely has an Indian film managed to achieve this feat. The casting is terrific. Ramya Krishnan in her short but substantial role is flawless as the feisty Raajmata. Tamannaah does the action bit well. Prabhas and Rana Daggubati are outstanding. They hugely contribute to making this routine good vs bad film a visual extravaganza...entertainment guaranteed. The scene which sees Shiva singlehandedly erecting a giant gold statue of Bhallala Deva is jawdroppingly iconic. Take a bow S.S. Rajamouli.

பாகுபலி... இந்த ஆண்டு முழுவதும் பேசினாலும் தீராத பிரமிப்பு இந்தப் படம். டென் கமாண்ட்மென்ட்ஸ், லாரன்ஸ் ஆப் அரேபியா, க்ளாடியேட்டர், அவதார் என பிரம்மாண்டத்துக்கும் செய்நேர்த்திக்கும் ஹாலிவுட் படங்களை இந்தியர்கள் உதாரணம் காட்டி வந்த காலம் மலையேறிவிட்டது. இதோ.. நம்மிடமே ஒரு அழுத்தமான அற்புதமான உதாரணம் இருக்கிறது... ராஜமவுலியின் பாகுபலி! இந்தியாவின் ஒவ்வொரு பகுதியிலும் எத்தனையோ மகா சாகசக் கதைகள் புதைந்து கிடக்கின்றன. கரிகாலன்கள், ராஜராஜன்கள், மருது சகோதரர்கள், மகாபலிகள், புலிகேசிகள், அசோகர்கள், கனிஷ்கர்கள் என வம்சங்களைத் தோண்டத் தோண்ட கிடைக்கும் கதைகளுக்கு நிகராக எத்தனை அதியுச்சக் கற்பனைகளும் இருக்க முடியாது. அந்த அழுத்தமான நம்பிக்கைதான் இந்த பாகுபலி. ஈர்ப்பான காட்சிகள், சம்பவங்களற்ற பிரம்மாண்டத்துக்கு எந்த மதிப்பும் இருப்பதில்லை. ஆனால் பாகுபலியில் ராஜமவுலி காட்டியிருக்கும் பிரம்மாண்டம் கதையோடும் காட்சிகளோடும் இயல்பாகப் பொருந்திப் போவதால் ஆச்சர்யத்தில் வாய் பிளக்கிறோமே தவிர, பிரம்மாண்டத்தை மட்டும் தனித்துப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. உலகிலேயே பிரமாண்டமானது, அழகு மிக்கது இயற்கைதான். அந்த இயற்கையை இன்னும் பேரழகுபடுத்திக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள் ராஜமவுலியும் அவரது ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் செந்தில்குமாரும். அதிரப்பள்ளி அருவியை நேரில் பார்த்தபோது கூட வராத ஆச்சர்யமும் ஆனந்தமும் இந்தப் படத்தில் கிடைத்தது. கோட்டையும் கொத்தளமும் போர்க் கருவிகளும் போர்ப் படைகளும்... ஒரு கால எந்திரத்தில் பயணித்து பாகுபலியின் காலத்துக்கே போன உணர்வைத் தந்தன. எங்கும் சிறு பிசிறு கூட தெரியாத அளவுக்கு அத்தனை நேர்த்தியாக காட்சிகளைச் செதுக்கியிருக்கிறார்கள் ராஜமவுலி அன்ட் டீம். ஏ.. அப்பா.. எத்தனை தத்ரூபமான ரத்தமும் சதையும் தெறிக்கும் மாபெரும் யுத்தகளம்! இந்தப் படத்தில் நடித்த யாரும் அந்தப் பாத்திரத்தை மீறி இம்மியளவுக்குக் கூட மிகையாக நடிக்கவில்லை. பிரபாஸ், ராணா, சத்யராஜ், நாஸர், ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணன் என ஒவ்வொருவருமே வாழ்நாளில் சொல்லிக் கொள்ளும் பாத்திரத்தில் வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். தமன்னாவின் அழகையும் நடிப்பையும் பாராட்டி இன்னும் நாலு பாரா எழுதலாம். ஒளிப்பதிவாளரின் தோளில் கைபோட்டுக் கொண்டே வேலை வாங்கியிருப்பார் போலிருக்கிறது இயக்குநர். ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும், இப்படி ஒரு கோணத்திலும் இதைப் பார்க்க முடியுமா என்ற பிரமிப்பு மேலோங்குகிறது. எம்எம் கீரவாணியின் இசை இந்தப் படத்தின் காட்சிகளுக்கு இன்னும் உயிரோட்டம் தருகிறது. 2.40 மணி நேரப் படம்... ஆனால் 'என்னங்க.. படம் அதுக்குள்ள முடிஞ்சிருச்சே... அந்த இன்னொரு பார்ட் காட்சிகளையும் சேர்த்தே ரிலீஸ் பண்ணிருக்கலாம்!' என்று சிலர் அடித்த கமெண்ட்தான் இந்தப் படத்துக்குக் கிடைத்த உச்சபட்ச பாராட்டாக இருக்கும் என நம்புகிறேன். நூறாண்டு கண்ட இந்திய சினிமாவுக்கு மகுடம் சூட்டியிருக்கிறார் எஸ் எஸ் ராஜமவுலி. அடுத்த பாகம் எப்போது வரும்? ஆவலுடன் காத்திருக்கிறது இந்திய சினிமா!
