The song is 'Maragada megham sindum mazhai varum neram idhu' . I rate this song as one of the best songs of MSV in the late 70's(which started getting rarer). Could anybody tell which raagam is this song based on?

RamaniChandran)

Mythila, Moolakadhai for NTVK was written by Maharisshi. Very well written and there were some masala added for the movie later, esp the one-sided love of JJ for SaratBabu.

Thavikkudhu Thayangudhu was a JC number?? he had lot of good songs in late 70s. I love the song for the sheer melody - melody songs with lengthy lines are the most diff to compose.

Saravanan, Where ,in the hell did you hear these exquisite numbers? You know, sometime mid 80's 1986 or 1987, I have just heard this song ONLY ONCE in my life time thru Coimbatore radio station and got instantly attracted to it. I used to and can still sing only the first 2 lines of 'Yaar thoorigai'. It seems to be a lost for ever song.
To me, IR's non hits are more precious than his hits.Especially the songs with a female voice in them.
To quote a few, 'Ninaithaal inikkum' from kalyanaraman set to abheri raagam with very interesting interludes, sung by SJ
'kotti kidakkudu selvangal bhoomiyile'- a melodious sudhadhanyasi , sung by Chitra in 'theerthakaraiyinile'
'uyire ' Oh!! what a song in GowriManohari raagam, sung by SJ from film (1985 period)'Mella pesungal'.This film has other good numbers like 'Sevvanthi pookalil seitha veedu' by UmaRamanan, Deepan and 'Kaadal saagaadhu' by SJ and MV.

My God, when I read the lines "Maragatha Megam sindhum mazhai varum neramidhu" I tried really hard to get the tune to which the lines were set and finally I got it! Believe me it's been nearly twenty years since I either heard this song or tried humming it. That sent me on a nostalgic trip to the days when amidst bitter exchanges we used to hoist our favorite MD's flag up. Time was when I used to literally die by MSV and those days are "NinathalE Inikkum" even now. It was only later it became crystal clear to me that Maestro Ilayaraja is a talent not commonly seen. I would like to list the following songs of MSV that I am still very fond of. Where possible I have also listed the movie names.

The december pookal song was actually sung by chitra and yesudas-sorry about the mix up.

I am glad mythila mentioned the 'Theertakarayinile' song by chitra-the song has a fabulous start, i mean the music - just an ensemble of violins. Also there's an other song by SPB -Theertakarai odathile then podigai sarathile-also a good one. I think the film starred roopini and mohan.

The songs from the movie 'Ninaikatherinda maname' were all very good, though the movie flopped.
