Usha, thanks for hosting Sumam Prathi sumam. Tune-la irukku magic. Start to finish, there are only high-points. Janaki's humming before second stanza, you think this is the high point of the song, and then in the stanza, the cute stiletto "venuva veedhiya eviti aashalu", you think the tune cannot get better; then you get "aa veLa naalo, ee gola..."; you think there thats, well, for want of a better word, or***m. Then comes "kaadhu mahima...". It's just one knockout punch after another.
It's like a boxing champion knocking out the same opponent 33 times in the same match. Rasaiya, konjam gap koduppa brilliance-ku song-la. mela mela adukkitte pona epdi thaan rasikkaradhu...
Plum,
Wow. What a description!! I have felt like this in many songs, particularly those that Raja gave for Malayalam. "Poo Kathinodu", "Konji Karayalle", "Ritubedha Kalpana" and so on.
Suresh, for me, this is the one song that got out that feeling. Poongathinodum settles into middling simplicity in the charanams. Konji Karayalle - definitely comes close but the tune is plain-jane there. Here, the tune is a bejewelled, bedecked sinuous maiden(Prabhu Ram, ok, KNNP territory)...
I think I have messed up the lyrics, though, and between "VenuvA vIdhiyA" and "A vEla nAlO", there is a linking passage equally beautiful. Lyrics correct-a sollungalaen...

Plum,
I generally consider the ever increasing melody in the charanams as one of the major hallmark of Raja's great songs. This is quite unlike many of the other MDs, who either come up with some very melodic stuff and maintain it throughout or come up with a lovely pallavi only to bring it down in the charanams. I was listening to 'Kadal Katrin' from Malayalam 'Friends' today and this thought passed through my mind, especially when Jesudas goes to the high pitch during the charanam, "Angakale". What a build up!! Maybe Usha should post this song one of these days.
I was thinking exactly the same when listening to 'kAlaththai vendRa' from UO during this morning commute :-)Quote:

No wonder he is the king of BGM!
Very true app_eng. I too love that shenoy bit. Infact the shenoy leads to the words conveying marriage. His aesthetic sense is impeccable.
Suresh, thanks for the lyrics.

As a pacifist, now I know what it is when you get into a scrap with a champion. Killer, this man, Raja.
Very often, and very commonly, people refer to music as the soothing balm, and melody that puts you to sleep is a description that even acclaimed carnatic singers claim as the proof of the excellence of music.
This song contradicts all that as do many others of Raja. Raja kills us every time; we are masochists, Raja fans; Andha maraNa adiyil dhaan sugame...

Plum,
Lovely description :) Very true. We all want that 'marana adi'. We prefer to be knocked out of our senses rather than be lulled into sleep.
Why is Raaja special to me?
simply because we have often heard the term 'leaves you breathless', but Raja practically does it for me - right from 'MEtti oli Kaatrodu' to 'Neramidhu' to till date Kooda varuviya. The way he does it is a mystery to me.
When I listen to 'Dheemi Dheemi si', when shreya starts the ' kuch paane lagi' to the fast passage and completes with violin moving on to the awesome interlude - It is like a rollercoaster taking one loop and leading to 360 degree loop back to back. This relentless movement naturally draws the breath out of me.
Jai, that's true. Breathless describes how you feel when Raja unveils magic after magic in the course of 2.5 minutes. I have felt very many times like someone has pinned me down and held me by force - oru hallucination level. Epdippa describe paNNaradhu.
Sumam Prathi Sumam running through the day in my mind, and I havent even heard it for years. Note by note, I can recall...

And he completes the Shenoy Bit just before the line begins 'Thirumana isai olithaan thinam thinam olikirathey' emphasising that the male is recalling the sound in his mind while having a dialogue with his lady love. why not along the line instead of before the line? It only shows that 'Raaja' is very scientific in understanding that the mind thinks before speaking.Quote:

suvai,
An excellent song. It is indeed by IR. 'Oru Yathra Mozhi' is an outstanding soundtrack. One whose 'suvai' goes up every time you hear it.
Hi Suresh nga!
I am glad it is IR's music...:-)
one wants to keep listening to it ileengala?!! thats how i felt...even though i don't understand malayalam....a very nice song for sure. IR music ku "suvai" jaasthiyaaga ketkanuma?:-)
Very true suvai. You want to keep listening to it. I have listened to these songs a zillion times now but when I clicked on the link you gave, I was once again hooked and couldn't shutdown the system until I completed listening to all the songs, though it was late in the night. I think many of us can blame Raja for giving us so many sleepless nights!!
Suvai,
Thanks for the response.

Usha,
Nice song. Lovely tune. The constant beat reminds me of some songs of Chiranjeevi like 'Malli Malli'. The charanam opening is very nice. Can't get an hang of the raga. Seems to be a combination of more than one raga.
Usha,
In the link you have provided there is a song from the film Rajkumar, 'Tolichupu Cheli Rasina' (Song 25). This is the Telugu version of 'alai meedu tadumarudhe oru odam'. Hearing it for the first time. An interesting duet, with the male voice singing Telugu lyrics and the female singing Hindi lyrics!!!
Hi Usha nga!
In the last link the 17th song I hear as this " O.. naTana mayUri vayyAri.." is it the song u wanted us to hear?
I dont see "abba ropa menta" as a start of a song in the link.
I will look for it again.
:-)
