M.S.Subbulakshmi ------98th birthday
I read a couple of articles about MS in The Hindu about her 98th birthday. Here is a song from Meera:

Tidbit:
I also read about India's Mars Orbiter launch. It comes a litle late after the US, the USSR and Europe. Still, it is an achievement to be proud of. That brought back memories of my teaching days. I taught courses that came under ECE and CS. In one of the courses my introductory lecture went like this:
What made computers possible? I listen to the answers and tell them ---"positional number system".
That is something unheard of even though they have been using it. Then I ask:
Who invented the positional number system? I wait and tell them---"Indians". That comes as a surprise.
Then I ask them: Imagine designing a computer with Roman numerals? Impossible!
There is some claim that Babylonians invented it. But, their base was different, not 10.
That is something to be proud of.
I usually give some history of technology and end the introductory lecture with this statement:
You never had it so easy.
There is still a little bit of vathiyar in me. If you don't like this tidbit, let me know. I won't do it again! :)
