in the above poster "viraivil isai", i can see four names in small font - not sure which one of them is the actual music director. shouldn't the music director be the hero in an "isai veliayeedu" poster?

Doing the second part after 2 decades is such a risky attempt! Audience taste has changed , it may have been an "awesome" movie in the 90's ( I liked it, and the songs were very good), but to cater for the current generation the story/direction/dialogue / editing / camera work MUST accommodate the current era, else the film will head for a disaster.
I am sure Karthick being a "veteran" Actor is aware of this , hope it will not be another "Jai hind 2 " !
That depends on how Amaran 2 is scripted. Amaran's story has great potential to be developed into a film which explores the underworld. More than the story, it is the execution and screenplay that matters and if the director is smart, it will certainly be successful. The story may not necessarily be connected to Amaran-1. It could be a extension of Amaran's character into the current underworld with a new story woven around that character.
Amaran supposed be to released with Thalapathy and GUna but released in 1992 pongal with mannan.
Amaran had big hype at the time. if they had released in 1991 deepavalli it would have ran well (just guess). all the hype went down by the time it released in 1992. it was considered as flop/disaster. I do not know why people write as this movie was blockbuster at the time. Most of his movies released in 1992 had very good music: Unna Nenachen Pattu Padichen, Nadodi Thendral, Nadodi Pattukkaran, Deiva Vaakku.
Back to the Future in Tamil - served with masala! :)

That is correct, Amaran bombed big time, the hype leading to release was tremendous, there was a song vethala potta sokkula na which was very popular prior to release. When the film released it was just crappy content. I think after this movie karthik steadily declined.
Yes, the movie bombed ( there were even plans to name it Chakravarthi) and there were murmurs that Rajini was made to sing in Mannan in response to Karthik singing in Amaran...
But Karthik quickly bounced back with several family-oriented and comedy-based hits....
Also I guess Amaran is Karthik's 100th movie.. the only actor(atleast 80s & 90s) who tasted BO success in its 100th movie is Vijayakanth..
That was Kaathirukka Neramillai another flop starring Kushbu and Sivaranjani.
Of all Karthik movies, Amaran had the biggest ever hype. Pre-release hype, advance booking were phenomenal. Amaran and its songs(especially vethala) were common topics of discussion for schoolgoers. If it had clicked, Karthik would have gone places. By the way who is this Rajeshwar? He directed many movies with Karthik in 90s, like Vigneshwar, Idhayathamarai. And now Amaran-2.
Amaran was a super hit movie. It ran 100 days in Madurai cinipriya theatre. I don't know from where you all getting information.
vigneshwar was not his movie. r.raghu directed it.
for more info on rajeshwar, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K._Rajeshwar
chakravarthi was another movie altogether starring karthik and bhanupriya - which too bombed.
karthik had two movies release on the same date jan 15, 1996 - ulaththai allitha and kizhakku mugam. in my hometown, kizhakku mugam ran for less than 3 days and ullathai allitha ran for a week or so. after the theatre replaced ullathai alli tha, the movie went viral and was re-released few days later to become a block buster.
Captain Prabakaran ?? If so the name it self was the reason for the BO success, I vaguely remember ( was quite young)watching this movie in London, the cinema was packed with Eezha diaspora , but IIRC the movie was no way related to the "Real" Parabakaran, hence many were disappointed ( again cant re collect much memories though) !
