Why not view it as this.......sivaji's greatness is well known,and I )the friend) am raising a statue despite all these oppositions.....

I did not skim through your posting my friend, indeed, went to your blog and read the full version too...which is why I have mentioned the part of socio political economics.....if the politician in the CM wants to encash on his friendship let him have his kicks. My feeling is that the Government must do it at their expense.....the Pondicherry Govt did itfirst for Sivaji ( JJ announced a grant of few grounds for a manimandapam)....the Andhra Pradesh Govt did it for M.S.Subbulakshmi and I am happy they did so...anyway as you say it is a point of view....The CM's, yours and mine.
Indeed as I post it.....I get the news that a Lorry has banged into the Statue.....hope it is not true or too bad.

Just got the news that the Statue is unharmed and safe....just the fencing around it has been hit...no problems....thank God.

The Shakespeare professor's name is Sundaram. (Mr. Raghavendran mentioned this some time back). He lent his voice to the "to be or not to be" Hamlet soliloquy in Rajapart Rangadurai. Quite disappointing not to hear that in Sivaji's voice. It would have been grand.

But in Caesar I think it was Sivaji himself. More informed hubbers like Mr.MuraLi can confirm.

Yes Sir. I personally visited the spot. A lorry while negotiating the turn from Radhakrishnan Salai towards Kamaraj Salai had hit the fencing made of Iron grills and one or two small pieces of grill had broken. No damage done to either statue or the podium. Sun News had needlessly created a tension.

As you say being the friend of Sivaji is a honour to Kalaignar. To say that just Sivaji is a friend, he raised the statue - this version remains and it is difficult to interpret in its intended version. Whether Sivaji is a friend of Kalaignar or not, his statue should be erected at any cost. That's what you come to say I believe and I too fully agree to it. At the same time, we should not forget how much mental turmoil Kalaignar faced for doing it. And as a true Sivaji Fan we should sincerely appreciate his tough stand for completing the task. That's what every body here means and that's why we appreciate Kalaignar. Kalaignar rightly argued at the function, and asked Adhu enna vaikkakkoodaadha silaiya? And had the objections come from the opposition camp of NT, it would have been understandable. But the objection came from the so-called Gandhians/ congressmen. Both in principle and biographically NT is close to Kamaraj and Gandhi. His birth day falls one day before Gandhi. His death anniversary comes in the same week of the birth day of Kamaraj. This is biographical. We know how a true follower of Gandhi and Kamaraj NT is. That's why Kalaignar rightly pointed out and he aptly chose the place.
If you take it in this perspective, you might become more clear of the situation.

While the varippanam line of Bhoori has been rightly condemned, I agree that harping on my friend hence I kept statue is demeaning to the great artist. It is just an attempt to try and gross benefits out of people who happened to be his friend. But it looks less insincere than my naarpadhu aandu kaala nanbar after cheru vaarufying for 15 years against that nanban

I have nothing against the govt erecting statues for icons. I understand your point about practical realities - it is hard to object to a chief minister saying things like this in a public forum, especially when the end result is highly desired. It is hard to swallow, though.

Since about 15 years ago when I listened to chinnan chiriya vanna paravai ennaththai solludhamma sung on stage during a Thaipoosam festival in Batu Caves, I have been completely floored by the excellent singing by TMS and S Janaki. The song seems like a competition between two vidhwans and both TMS and S Janaki had given all thier best in the song. Repeated hearings only increased my desire to see the action on the screen but my search for the film was fruitless. Until today that is....

Story begins with Vijayakumari awaiting for her murai maaman, Sundaram (SG). She sings poonthOtta kaavalkkaaraa poo paraikka iththanai naalaa. Note the lyrics: this is the reason I maintain that new songs can never compete with the olden day songs. How beautifully Kannadhasan scripts of a woman in love awaiting her lover!!!

We learn that Sundaram is going to the States to further his studies. The titles come on with the fabulous kungumam mangala mangaiyar kungumam - sung to perfection by Soolamangalam Sisters - in the background. In the song, Kannadhasan pays tribute to Sivaji's mother in the line: raajamani ennum annai mugaththil milirum mangala kungumam! :thumbsup:

When he returns from the States, Sundaram meets with despair written on everyone's face. He learns that his mother (Rajamma) is now a widow without kungumam! He is told that his father had commited a crime, jailed and had comitted suicide. Sundaram leaves for Bombay for business. While in the hotel room, he comes accross Rangarao shooting and killing a jewlery merchant. Sundaram takes the gun from Rangarao ( :huh: ) and claims to be the killer! He then escapes to Madras.

In Madras SSR is made the inspector in charge of the crime. Sundaram meets Sharada on the road. kaalangal thOrum thirudargal irunthar sings Sarada. He then seeks the wife and family of the jewler and gives her money to get by. To escape the police Sundaram dons a lady's dress with a big kungumam. Sivaji will be in his element here. :rotfl:

He meets Rangarao and takes him to his friend Muthuraman's house. When he meets his mother in Madurai, the righteous woman tries to turn him to the police. Sundaram once again escapes and returns to Madras. Sarada's father (Sahasranamam) advertises for a home tutor for his son. Sundaram comes in maaruvEdam as thamizh teacher Kaarmegam and joins the household. In the meantime Inspector SSR has eyes for Sarada!

Slowly but surely Sundaram and Saradha develop feelings for each other. thoongaadha kannendru ondru thudikkindra sugamendru ondru thaangaadha manamendru ondru thandhaayE nee ennai kandu. At the end of the song Karmegam removes his wig and make up and Saradha sees the real Sundaram.

SSR tries many ways to catch Sundaram but all his plans fail. In one scene he enters Muthuraman's house while Sundaram is there. Our master than dons another look and acts as Muthuraman's father. :lol:

Later Saradha asks Sundaram the reason for his dual personality who refuses to clarify but instead sings the masterpiece: mayakkam enadhu thaayagam mounam enadhu thaai mozhi. :thumbsup: Thinking of his running away from th epoolice he sings: naanE enakku pagai aanEn en naadagathil naanE sirai aanEn, thEnE unakku unakku puriyaadhu, andha deivam varaamal vilangaadhu. He also contemplates about his promise to marry Vijayakumari and now his feelings for Saradha: vidhiyum madhiyum veramma, adhan vilakkam naandhaan paaramma, madhiyil vandhaval neeyamma, en vazhi maraithaal vidhiyamma! Hats off to Kannadhasan! And of course KVM and TMS.

To catch Sundaram, SSR comes as a beggar to Muthuraman's house (where Vijayakumari now stays), but Sundaram gets the one up by appearing as another beggar! Yes, five avathars in one movie!

Just as I was wondering when my beloved song will appear, Saradha is asked to do a katcheri and Sundaram/Karmegam follows. She sings chinna chiriya vanna paravai ennaththai solludhamma. Against my expectations, it was not a competition song and was just a song performed in a concert. :( At the end of the song, SSR recognises Karmegam as Sundaram. Sarasha comes to his rescue and switches off the lights to enable Sundaram to escape.

In the meantime, Sundaram's mother is adamant in wanting to give up Sundaram to the police. Sundaram promises to give himself up when he gets Vijayakumari to agree to marry Muthuraman. The police arrive and corner the house. People start running away and by mistake Vijayakumari is shot dead! As a last request she asks Sundaram to place the kungumam on her forehead.

Sundaram is brought before the judge. He admits to his crime and request to be punished. Rangarao appears and there is a complete twist to story...... best seen on the screen. :D

'குங்குமம்' படம் பற்றிய விளக்கம் நன்றாக உள்ளது. ஒவ்வொரு பாடலையும் நன்றாக விவரித்துள்ளீர்கள். 'குங்குமம்' டைட்டில் பாடலில் காண்பிக்கப்படும் காட்சிகள், நடிகர்திலகம் அமெரிக்கா சென்றபோது எடுக்கப்பட்டவை. ஆனால் படத்தின் கதை கொஞ்சம் குழப்பமானதுதான். சட்டென்று புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாதது (ஒருவேளை எனக்குத்தான் புரியவில்லயோ..?).

'சின்னஞ்சிறிய வண்ணப்பறவை' முழுப்பாடலையும் படித்தபோது, மறைந்த சகோதரி ஜெயந்தியின் நினைவு வந்து கண்களைப்பனிக்க வைத்தது.

Except for certain inconsistencies (much detailed in earlier postings by others including Murali-sar), I find Kungumam to be a vastly underrated flick.

Good write-up. I was expecting a bit more analysis on the story and the performance though.

1. First of all, I am not offended by anything that has been said so far. In fact, I feel kind of glad - that Sivaji fans feel so strongly about Sivaji.

2. For the record, I am not a hard core fan of Sivaji. I like him as an actor, but I think for a person of his talent, there were too many junk movies from him!

3. For the record, I am not against a statue for Sivaji either. I think he is a true icon, a great icon, and statues for icons are quite justified.

4. For the record again, the tax money line being quoted out of context. The previous line is "if you want to erect a statue for your friend, it should be done with your money!" Do read the lines together. :-))

5. I have to ask you this question - several of you feel offended by the line "why is our tax money being used" taken OUT OF CONTEXT from a NOBODY. And none of you feel even a tinge of offense from the CHIEF MINISTER repeatedly saying that he felt it was his duty to erect a statue to his FRIEND? You don't feel that it is wrong of Kalaignar to make this Sivaji's identification? Hmm. Do read the transcript - he repeatedly emphasizes his friendship, and finishes off by saying that it was his duty.

6. I understand Shri Mohanraman's viewpoint about practical reality - I partially agree with him. He explained that if Kalaignar wants to get some mileage from this, it is a small matter. After all, he did face enormous difficulties before the statue get erected. I still think trying to get some mileage out of this is in bad taste. Shri Ragavendra also expressed views simlar to Shri Mohanraman, though he didn't quite interpret Kalaignar's comments the same way I did.

7. I have great respect for Madam Saradha's views. But I don't quite buy this argument of part of Sivaji's tax money being used to erect his statue. I am sure Silk Smitha too paid lot of taxes, but I would oppose any move to erect a statue for her! I think so would Madam Saradha!

''இவர்தான் சிவாஜியின் அண்ணன், தங்கவேலு'' என்று என் நண்பர் சொன்னார்.

மணி சரியாக எட்டரை. ''ஸாரி, ஸாரி... ரொம்ப ஸாரி... உங்களைக் காக்க வெச்சிட்டேன். உட் காருங்க'' என்றபடி வந்தார் சிம்மக் குரலோன். அவர் நெற்றியில் அரை அங்குல அகலம், இரண் டரை அங்குல நீளத்திற்கு ஒரு விபூதிக் கீற்று.

''நீங்க எட்டு மணிக்கு வருவீங்கன்னு ஏழு மணிக்கே என்னை எழுப்பும்படி என் மனைவி கிட்டே சொல்லியிருந்தேன். அவங்க எட்டு மணிக்கு தான் என்னை எழுப்பி னாங்க. ராத்திரி படுக் கிறபோது லேட்டா யிடுச்சு. அதனாலே கொஞ்சம் தூங்கட் டும்னு இருந்துட்டாங்க போலிருக்கு. ஐயாம் வெரி ஸாரி!'' என்றார் மீண்டும்.

அப்போது கோயில் குருக்கள் ஒருவர் உள்ளேயிருந்து வந்து, ஹாலுக்குள் நுழைந்து, ஓர் ஓரமாக வாசலுக்குப் போனார்.

''இவர்தான் தெருவிலே இருக் கிற நம்ம பிள்ளையார் கோயிலில் பூஜை செய்யும் குருக்கள்!'' என்றபடியே வாசல் பக்கம் திரும்பிப் பார்க்கிறார் சிவாஜி. 'கேட்'டில் ரசிகப் பெருமக்கள் கூட்டம் கூடி வேடிக்கை பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதைப் பார்த்து ரசிக்கிறார்.

அப்போது, குட்டையான ஆசாமி ஒருவர் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே கையில் பொட்டலத் துடன் ஹாலுக்குள் நுழைகிறார்.

''வாங்க, வாங்க! பார்த்து நாளாச்சு! எப்போ வந்தீங்க? (எங்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பி) இவர் நம்ம ஓல்டு ஃபிரெண்டு, குப்தா. திருப்பதியிலே காண்டீன் நடத்த றாரு. கோயில் பிரசாதம் கொண்டு வந்திருக்காரு. ''நீங்க திருப்பதி கோயிலுக்குக் கொடுத்த யானைக்குட்டி ரொம்ப நல்லாயிருக்கு...''

''அஞ்சாந் தேதி என் பெண்ணுக்குக் கல்யா ணம்! மெட்ராஸ்லேதான். யு மஸ்ட் கம் வித்தவுட் ஃபெயில்.''

காரியதரிசி போல் பக் கத்தில் இருக்கும் குரு மூர்த்தியைப் பார்க்கிறார் சிவாஜி.

''ஒண்ணாந் தேதி யிலேருந்து எட்டு நாள் பம்பாய்ல இருக்கோம்.''

''ஐயாம் வெரி ஸாரி குப்தா! பம்பாய்ல ஏழெட்டு நாடகங்கள். எட்டு நாள் கேம்ப்...''

''ஒரே ஒரு நாள் வந்து விட்டுப் போக முடியாதா?''

''இம்பாஸிபிள்! என் பிரதர்ஸை கண்டிப்பா வரச் சொல்கிறேன்...''

போன் மணி அடிக்கி றது. குருமூர்த்தி பேசி விட்டு வருகிறார். ''பத்து மணிக்கு ரிகர்சலாம்'' என்கிறார்.

''இன்னிக்கு சாயங்காலம் ஜஹாங்கீர் நாடகம். அதுக்கு ரிகர்சல். நான் போய் என் வசனங்களைக் கொஞ்சம் பாடம் செய்யணும். இந்த நாடகம் போட்டு ரொம்ப நாளாச்சு. ஒரு நாடகத்துக்கும் இன்னொரு நாடகத்துக்குமிடையே எத்தனையோ சினிமா டயலாக் பேச வேண்டியிருக்கு. அதனாலே இதைக் கொஞ்சம் 'பிரஷ்ஷப்' செய்துக்கிட்டா போதும். சக்தி கிருஷ்ணசாமி இதுலே வசனத்தை கொஞ்சம் 'பொயட்ரியா' எழுதி இருக்காரு. அதனாலே கொஞ்சம் கஷ்டம்...''

நான் மூலையிலிருந்த புலியைச் சற்று நேரம் உற்றுப் பார்த்துவிட்டு சிவாஜியிடம், ''இந்தப் புலி...?''

''ஆமாம். நான் ஐதராபாத்தில் சுட்டது... அதோ அந்த 'பான்த்தர்' கூட நான் அடிச்சதுதான். ரெண்டு வருஷமா நான் வேட்டைக்கெல்லாம் போறது இல்லே. ஷூட்டிங் இல்லாட்டி வீட்டுலேதான் இருப்பேன். நான் 'ஹோம் பேர்டு'' என்றவர், 'கோல்டு பிளேக்' சிகரெட் எடுத்துப் பற்ற வைத்துக் கொண்டார்.

''உங்கள் வீட்டில் ஒரு சிறு தியேட்டர் இருக்கிறதாமே...''

''ஆமாங்க, வீட்டுலே இருக்கிற வங்க பார்க்கிறதுக்காகத்தான் அதைக் கட்டினேன். வாங்களேன் பார்க்கலாம்'' என்று எழுந்து நடக்க ஆரம்பித்தார் சிவாஜி.

'சரி, தியேட்டர் இருந்தா இவங்க குட்டிச் சுவராயிடு வாங்க'ன்னு தியேட்டரையும் கலைச்சுட்டு, அவங்களையும் பெங்களூருக்கு மூட்டை கட்டி அனுப்பிச்சுட்டேன். அங்கே நம்ம சிஸ்டர் இருக்காங்க. அவங்க ஹஸ்பெண்டு ரொம்பக் கண்டிப் புக்காரர். அவர் கிட்டே பசங்க கொஞ்சம் பயந்து படிப்பாங்க. இங்கே இருந்தா நான் அவங்களை கவனிக்க முடியறதில்லை. வரவங் களும் போறவங்களுமா... பசங்க படிப்பதற்கு ஏற்ற இடமா இந்த வீடு..?''

திரும்பி வீட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்து முன் ஹாலுக்கு வரும் வழியில் சிவாஜி கையைக் கட்டிக் கொண்டு, ஒரு கோயிலின் கர்ப்பக் கிரகத்தை நெருங்குவது போல் பய பக்தியுடன் ஓர் அறைக்குள் நுழைந்தார். அது பூஜை அறை என்று நிணைத்தோம். ஆனால், உள்ளே காலடி எடுத்து வைத்ததும், அங்கு நடிகர் திலகத்தை ஈன்றெ டுத்த தாய் திருமதி ராஜாமணி அம்மையார் கட்டிலில் அமர்ந் திருப்பதைக் கண்டோம். அருகில், தந்தையார் சின்னையா மன்றாயர். இணையற்ற கலைஞர் ஒருவரை திரையுலகிற்கு அளித்த அப் பெரியோர்களை வணங்கினோம். பிறகு, சிவாஜி தம் மனைவியை அன்புடன் எங்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்தார். கண்ணில் சாந்தமும் உதட்டில் புன்முறுவலும், நெற்றியில் பெரிய குங்குமமும் துலங்கிய அவரைப் பார்த்தபோது, 'கை கொடுத்த தெய்வ'த்தில் விஜயாவிடம் சிவாஜி, தமிழ்ப் பெண்கள் எப்படியிருக்க வேண்டும் என்று சொல்கிறாரே... தம் மனைவியை மனத்தில் வைத்துக் கொண்டுதான் அப்படிச் சொன்னாரோ என்று நினைக்கத் தோன்றியது.

போட்டோ எடுக்கும்போது சிவாஜி, புகைப்படக்காரரிடம் ''ஒயர் அறுந்திருக்கு, பாருங்க'' என்று சுட்டிக் காட்டினார். போட்டோகிராபர் உட்பட அங்கிருந்த யாருமே அதைக் கவனிக்கத் தவறியபோது, சிவாஜி மட்டும் அதைக் கவனித்ததில் வியப்பொன்றுமில்லை.

எதையுமே கூர்ந்து கவனிக்கும் சக்தி படைத்தவன்தான் சிறந்த ஓவியனாகவோ, எழுத்தாளனா கவோ, நடிகனாகவோ ஆக முடியும் என்று கூறினார் சிவாஜி. தொடர்ந்து, நடிப்புத் திறமையைப் பற்றியும் பேசினார். ''திறமை இருந்தால் ஒருத்தனையும் ஒருவ ரும் அமுக்கமுடியாது. பிரதர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மாதிரி கத்திச் சண்டை போடறேன்னு ஒருத்தர் ரெண்டு பேர் கிளம்பினாங்க... முடிஞ்சுதா? அவரா மத்தவங்க திறமைக்குக் குறுக்கே நின்னாரு?'' என்று குறிப்பிட்டார்.

குருமூர்த்தி வந்து ரிகர்சலுக்கு நேரமாகிவிட்டது என்று ஞாபகப் படுத்த, எல்லோரிடமும் விடை பெற்றுக்கொண்டு போர்டிகோ வுக்கு வருகிறார் சிவாஜி. கார் வந்து நிற்கிறது. 'கேட்'டில் நின்ற ரசிகர்கள் கூட்டம் கை தட்டுகிறது. சிவாஜி அவர்களுக்கு வணக்கம் செய்கிறார். பின்னர் பளபளக்கும் செருப்பில் அவருடைய கால்கள் 'நைஸா'க நுழைய, காரில் ஏறி ஒத்திகைக்குக் கிளம்புகிறார்.

1. இந்த வருடத்தில் அமெரிக்க அரசாங்கத்தின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று அந்த நாட்டுக்கு சுற்றுப்பயணம் மேற்கொண்ட நடிகர் திலகம் அமெரிக்க நாட்டிற்கு விஜயம் செய்தார். அந்த நாட்டின் நயாகரா நகரம் அவரை ஒரு நாள் மேயராக பதவியளித்து கௌரவித்தது. இந்த கெளரவம் அளிக்கப்பட்ட முதல் இந்திய கலைஞன் நடிகர் திலகம் மட்டுமே.

அமெரிக்காவில் நியுயார்க் மாநிலத்திலும், கனடாவில் ஓன்டாரியொ மாநிலத்திலும் 'நயாகரா' என்ற பெயரில் நகரங்கள் உள்ளன. அவற்றில் அமெரிக்காவில், நியுயார்க் மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள நயாகாரா தான் சிவாஜியை ஒரு-நாள்-மேயராக்கி கௌரவித்தது என்று படித்த ஞாபகம்.

இதற்குப் பின்னர் நான் திருச்சியில் இருந்த போது (1991 அல்லது 1992) இருவர் உள்ளம் ஸ்டார் திரையரங்கில் (A/C) வெளியிடப்பட்டு மாபெரும் வரவேற்பை பெற்று 4 வாரங்கள் ஓடியது . :D
