MGR refuses to fade from Tamil Nadu election scene.
He is like Elvis Presley or the Beatles. But, the fading magic of the 20th century rock and roll icons is no comparison to the MGR phenomenon. Even 26 years after his death, the yesteryear matinee idol dominates the political canvas in Tamil Nadu.
At public meetings and political events, it is MGR film songs that provide the musical theme. At campaign venues as the crowds wait for political leaders, MGR lookalikes keep the audience entertained. Even these fake MGRs evoke such passion that the crowds want to shake their hands or touch them.
AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, leading a solo show for the party founded by MGR, invokes her mentor's name all through her campaign and belts out popular numbers from his films to motivate cadres. On March 3, when she launched her campaign in the temple town of Kancheepuram, Jayalalithaa signed off with the MGR number "Achcham enbathu madamaiada...Anjamai dravidar udamaiada..." (Fear is foolishness... Fearlessness is a property of Dravidians) from the 1960 blockbuster 'Manaathi Mannan'.
A couple of weeks later, her arch rival and DMK leader M K Stalin, campaigning near Madurai, took a dig at Jayalalithaa using the same song, accusing her of trying to wriggle out of the ongoing trial in the disproportionate assets case against her. At almost all the halts during his electioneering, DMDK chief and actor Vijayakanth - another claimant to the MGR mantle who calls himself Karuppu (black) MGR - and his wife Premalatha demand to know why Jayalalithaa has not named flagship schemes of her government - Amma canteens, Amma pharmacies, Amma mineral water - after MGR.
MGR acolyte Panruti S Ramachandran, who rejoined AIADMK recently, says: "MGR films portrayed simple values of life -like don't steal even if your mother is starving. The relevance of these values remains and so does his memory."
In January 2011, four months ahead of the assembly elections, DMK chief M Karunanidhi had sent son M K Stalin to pay floral tributes at MGR's memorial on the Marina. The party justified the show of obeisance saying, "DMK workers know the difference between MGR the man and MGR the political opponent". A few years earlier, Karunanidhi unveiled a museum for MGR near his memorial. Several portraits that were on display showed him with MGR. There was just one blurred picture of Jayalalithaa with her mentor.
In 2008, when Jayalalithaa accused Vijayakanth of trying to grab the MGR legacy from her, the actor shot back, "I never said I am MGR's heir. But I am following in his footsteps like Ekalavya in Mahabharata. MGR is my political guru." The MGR effect on this Lok Sabha election may be subtle, but the reverence for the man remains, be it among his followers or his political rivals.
