On the occasion of Indian Independence Day tomorrow, I am posting some patriotic film songs.
Mere Desh Ki Dharti - UPKAR (1967)
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri praised Manoj Kumar's earlier film Shaheed and enthused him to make a film on the Jai Jawaan Jai Kissan slogan. The slogan shaped into Manoj Kumar's official debut as a director for Upkar, where he believably played both a jawan and a kisan. A huge hit, Upkar made Manoj an authority on screen patriotism.
Music : Kalyanji Anandji; Singer : Mahender Kapoor; Lyrics : Gulshan Bawra;
Featuring : Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh, Pran, Prem Chopra.

Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada - PURAB AUR PASCHIM (1970)
Purab Aur Paschim is a 1970 Indian film. The movie was produced and directed by Manoj Kumar, and was his fourth film on Patriotism. The film received generally positive reviews. Deepa Gahlot of Bollywood Hungama wrote "By linking the story to the freedom struggle, Manoj Kumar was saying that freeing India from British rule is not enough if Indians do not feel proud of their Indianness."
Music : Kalyanji Anandji; Singer : Mahender Kapoor; Lyrics : Indeewar Featuring : Manoj Kumar, Saira Bhabu, Madan Puri.

Kar Chale Hum Fida, Jaano Tan Saathiyon - HAQEEQAT (1964)
The movie was based on the 1962 Sino-Indian War. It won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film in 1965. This song has become synonymous with patriotism in India. (It means: We have sacrificed our lives and bodies for the Nation, now the Nation is in your hands, take care of it.)
Music : Madan Mohan; Singer : Mohammed Rafi; Lyrics : Kaifi Azmi; Featuring : Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra, Priya Rajvansh, Sanjay Khan, Vijay Anand.

Vande Mataram - ANAND MATH (1952)
This is a 1952 Hindi patriotic-historical film directed by Hemen Gupta, based on Anandamath, the famous Bengali novel written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1882. The novel and film are set in the events of the Sanyasi Rebellion, which took place in the late 18th century in eastern India, especially Bengal. This song played an important role throughout the Indian Independence Movement and was eventually declared the "National Song" (much more powerful than national anthem) at the time of Independence in 1947. Kumar's tune for Vande Mataram is still considered an important version of this popular and widely interpreted song.
Music : Hemant Kumar; Singer : Lata Mangeshkar; Lyrics : Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya.
Featuring : Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Geeta Bali.

Vande Mataram - A.R.RAHMAN (1997)
Vande Mataram is a 1997 studio album by Indian musician A. R. Rahman. It is the largest selling Indian non-film album to date. The album was released on the Golden Jubilee anniversary of India's independence. A critical and commercial hit, the title song from the album is one of India's most popular songs of all time.
The album was met with overwhelming responses. Rahman became the first Indian artist of popular music to go international when Vande Mataram was released simultaneously in 28 countries across the world. Rahman himself performed live at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi on the eve of the Golden Jubilee of Indian Independence to a packed audience that comprised the then Prime Minister of India, Inder Kumar Gujral.
Music : A.R.Rahman; Singer : A.R.Rahman; Lyrics : Mehboob; Producers : A. R. Rahman, Kanika Myer Bharat, Bharatbala.

SHAAN (1980)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...20px-Shaan.jpg
Shaan was directed by Ramesh Sippy after the super success of his previous venture, Sholay. The story was written by Salim-Javed. The film was expected to match the success of Sholay but failed to do so. The film however, ran to packed houses in its re-runs and made a lot of money. Ramesh Sippy did obtain the services of Sholay's music composer, R.D. Burman, whose songs for the film provided it with a Best Music nomination at Filmfare. The songs became super hit in the year 1980. The usage of synth and electric guitar is just superb in this movie. (Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.)

A magnificent composition by R D Burman that is strangely obscure in spite of his enduring popularity to this day. Maybe it's because it's sung by Rafi than the usual favourites of the RD camp.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAek1_h5aFY
Baharon ke Sapne is as such a great soundtrack. Lata Mangeshkar also has two great solos.
Happy Vinayaka Chathurthi ! :)
In reading about Indian festivals I came to understand that large scale celebration of Vinayak Chathurthi began in Maharashtra.
Here is a Marathi song in praise of Vinayaka by Aruna Sairam:

I was searching for songs in Sur Sangam (1985), the Hindi remake of SankarabaraNam (1979). I found this song by
Rajan and Sajan Mishra in Malkauns:
Aaye Sur Ke Panchi Aaye.....

If you like here is a Jugalbandi:

^ "Aaye Sur Ke Panchi Aaye" -> first time I'm hearing it and its a nice song; but I somehow prefer the original Sankarabharanam, maybe due to repeated listenings.
On the occassion of Bharat Ratna M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI's 97th Birth Anniversary today, here are some songs from MEERA (1947), the Hindi version of the original Tamil film Meera (1945). The film was a success in both the Tamil and the Hindi versions. The Hindi version of the film had an introduction by the "Nightingale of India", Sarojini Naidu. The film was screened at various film festivals such as Prague Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival. IBN Live included the film in its list of 100 greatest Indian films of all time.

Hari Tum Haro .....( set to Darbari Kanada)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCzxL5RMjUA
I listened to her rendition for the first time in 1966! This song was requested by Mahatma Gandhi himself.
^ Lovely bhajan by M.S. From the comments section at Youtube : Gandhiji loved this Bhajan very much. On Gandhiji's 78th birthday in 1947, which turned to be the last birthday of his life, M.S.Amma sang this Bhajan in front of him. He appreciated her very much. When Gandhiji was assassinated 3 months later, this Bhajan came there with the report. When M.S.Amma heard this, she suddenly collapsed.

A moving song! :(
Today is Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar's birthday, and I'm posting some of my favorite songs by her, though it's quite difficult to select just a few songs from the thousands of hits she has rendered. There can be no lover of Hindi film music who is not moved by her mesmerising voice. Her songs are especially nostalgic for me as they remind me of my teenage and college life in Delhi, when I used to watch films with my friends. BTW I'm posting the songs in separate posts as it would be easier to index them.
