RC :)
I used to go on bus from Bhuvanagiri (a town near Chidambaram) to Cuddalore to get to my college(eventhough I used bus for only 3 months) and this song would be played in the bus everyday.
Appo kettathoda sari, ippathan indha paadalai thirumba ketkkiren!
Nice pick indeed NeelD, thanks for the song!
madhu & Jack, thanks for the info.
SN23,
Thanks for the storyline. Ravichandran couldn't have been that aged in 1978. He was like 20 in Kadhalikka Neramillai and was very handsome.
I wish Thyagarajan had stayed an actor few more years, like 10 more years or 15 more years. He can pair with any heroine he wants. If he had stayed longer that would have delayed his son's entry and saved me from few years of torture.
bobgalee,
anbE oru Asai gItham is a lovely song. It is still somewhat popular. That is why I went with the rare song thAli seyyattumA. Please check your pm about submitting songs to POW.
Usha, thank you.

Pick #527
Song: vAn vanthu thEn sinthum
Film: Engal Thaaikkulame Varuga
Music: Chandrabose
Singers: S.Janaki, K.J.Yesudas
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1986
It is kind of amusing how these days some MD comes up with an average melody and everyone celebrates it like it is a big deal. Listen to the beautiful light classical vAn vanthu. One of the best from Chandrabose. SJ and KJY in their best forms. I am quite surprised that this song was actually overlooked and has become rare. May be it should be re-released. It will become a superhit.
This song reminds of another nice light classical "thalaivA nI vA" by Chandrabose for the film Puthiya Paathai, but was not featured in the film and went overlooked.
This song is a nEyar(priya32) viruppam.

Hi Neel..
nice pick. But I dont think its a rare one, as its aired often in many radio stations. IMHO CB is better in melody than kuthu songs.
This song proves it. :P
Thanks NeelD for featuring my request :) !
Well in this particular song, you can feel the 'chemistry' of both singers' voices. Lovely song!
Dear Neel,
Nice song. Nice rendition by KJY and SJ.. Rare pair..
madhu, I am glad to learn that it is not exactly rare. But it feels good to host a request and to highlight a nice song. :D
priya32, you are welcome.
Usha, thank you.
Pick #528
Song: vA vA vasanthamE
Film: Puthukkavithai
Music: Ilaiyaraja
Singer: Malaysia Vasudevan
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1982
Jyothi shot to fame as T.Rajendar's heroine in "Rayil Payanangalil". Like many other heroines of TR she made a name for herself too. But just not a successful career. After pairing with Rajinikant in Puthukkavithai she retained the film title as part of her identity. I came across Jyothi few years ago in "Kadal Pookkal" playing mother to a teenage girl.
I had been searching for a Jyothi song for the last few months but couldn't find any rare ones. So, I settled for this popular and beautiful song by IR. So soothingly sung by MV the emotion is contagious. One of the best songs by MV. It takes me back to those damp mornings and slushy roads of my hometown and the vasantham coming from the radio flowing through the windows on to the streets...
This song is dedicated to the memory of "Puthukkavithai" Jyothi.

Neel, if you present something in memory of someone, it means that the someone is no more among us.
NOV: pudhukavithai Jothi passed away few months ago. She was suffering from Cancer, it seems!
:omg:
my condolences :(

NOV,
I realized you did not know, after I replied. The news did not get a big coverage in the media.
Neel: One of the excellent songs of MV (one of very few soft melodies he sang). His voice very well suited Rajini.
Talking about Jyothi, she was prominent in the group of mature-faced heroines. Mudivalla Arambam is also a Ok sort of Jyothi's movies. Her cameo role in Nenjangal pairing Vijayakumar was also good.
"Jyothi in Pudhukavidhai" received lot of criticism from movie-lovers and media. That too "Rajini's jodi" made Vikatan to write "vEru yArumE kidaikaliyA?". But she did a good job, especially in the 2nd half.
Her demise, after the mourn on departure of Padmini and Srividya, was not observed/posted in many media. It seems she suffered from the no-chance-of-recovery arakkan called Cancer. She was not even 50 (or just 50), I guess, when she passed away.
Again thanks for sharing one of my fav MV's songs.
Neel, for tomorrow, consider hosting aadhaaram neeyE ganapathy naadha (mOdhagamum adhirasamum pannuvOm) from varuvaan vadivElan, in conjunction with vinaayagar chathurthi.
the song is quite unique with AR Ramani Ammaal singing in her usual bhajan style and Sirgazhi in his rich carnatic stye. :)

Song: alaiyAga Adi

A rare and beautiful solo by SJ. I believe Sri Chamundeswari Mahimai was originally made in Telugu or Kannada and dubbed into Tamil. It starred Sarojadevi in the lead.
