I could do a calculation based on the above statistics for 1964. But I am looking for an anecdotal story on this - my father used to talk about 6 (no reruns, brand new releaseed in last 2-3 months) movies running simultaneously sometime in the 60's and how he watched them all in the span of 2 days. Obviously, some of those would have been the 26th time or 27th time watching :-).
I do not remember the year or the movies. This was in Chennai.

Based on one more info you are providing ( the no of times your father had been watching), it has to be either 1961 or 64.

That list had atleast 3 all-time great movies which he raves often about so I think it must be 1964. This discussion happened when I was in School(a good two decades ago) so I dont exactly remember the movies. Of the 1961 and 1963 list, the only movies making his rah-rah list are Pava Mannipu, Paasa Malar(1961), Paar Magale and Kungumam(1963).
So 1964 it must be and the biggies must be
Pudhiya Paravai and Navarathri and ????. Even as I conclude this deduction(thanks to Murali's encyclopaedia of reference), it clicks. Pudhiya Paravai was definitely one of the 6. So it must be 1964. Question is what that 3rd biggie could have been?

Saw " Kulama Gunama " for the first time, in C Channel.

A very ordinary film and IMO, KSG is always too melodramatic & makes the artistes to do over the top performances most of the time. It's hard to recollect any songs. NT has done justice to the character, as always.

I wished Nambiar could have done more such roles.

Murali-sar, we all know the greatness of NT.

But your "sathanai" series shows how much we have taken all those success for granted. It really opens up our eyes...asking ourselves the history as we know it. History can be revised, with proper and additionally found facts.

And I am seeing it now...I am glad that I have crossed over to become NT fan. I can see very clearly the injustice done to NT, the no 2 factor that haunted him the rest of his life. It is not so, and it is a duty of fans like me to clarity this whenever the subject is brought up by non-NT fans.

I have a personal experience kind of question for all Sivaji fans:

What is the first movie of Sivaji in which he impressed you with his histrionic skills?

For me it has to be Manohara. I saw the movie when I was around 11 or 12, around 1977. It was an interesting movie per se and I would have probably liked it even without the fire spitting dialogs. (Invisible man, revenge, conspiracy...) But Sivaji was astounding in that movie. I vividly remember the court scene where he confronts his father. The energy he brought to that scene was unbelievable. I didn't even understand the later part of his dialog, I was so engrossed in watching him. His presence, his aura, was the only thing that mattered for 10 minutes or so...

I am much older now, and I haven't seen the movie again. Perhaps I won't be as impressionable again. But that was a great moment!

Saraswathy Sabatham - my favourite of APN/NT combo. It drove home a valid point at the end, and I find the film highly entertainment, no less in weight than the usually praised heavyweight, Thiruvilayadal.

Yes, and we get generous dose of NT's walking too.

While Thiruvilayadal remains snippets or sketches, this is one whole movie on a single plot. Which is greater?

And I can relate to NT's character...as he is more cerebral. I ain't a warrior or very rich, but I can think a little. So, you end up rooting for him and yes, at the end you know who actually wins...even though it was resolved diplomatically.

But who else can play this very literate person. A brain man, rather than an emotional warrior or an arrogant rich person. NT pulled it off magnificently.

Of course, his take on narathar offers another variation to many Narathars we had in the history of TFI.

Re-visited " Pattikada Pattanama" & noticed some interesting Madurai dialects.

In one of the scenes, Manorama would say " landhu" which has recently become very popular after PV & SUPU - of course, Vadivelu too uses it quite often.

In the scene, where JJ says that she doesn't know how to wear a saree and NT helps her. He finally comes out sweating and says, " Thaali kattumbodhu kooda ivvalavu kashta padala - Javuru vaangittaya.." . First time, I'm hearing this word.

The first actor who was awarded to Padma shri award was MGR in 1960. it was the time that Hindi agitation in tamil ndau was at pinnacle and the award was written in hindi. So MGR did not accept the award. this is what i heard and red from sources.

Sorry to say that what you have quoted is not right. MGR was never given Padmashree award. He was only awarded Bharat Ratna but it was done posthumously on 26th Jan 1988, a month after he passed away. Probably you are talking about the Bhaarath award given to him in 1972 (Best actor award for the year 1971 for Rickshawkaran) and there was a problem with it's language. Again Anti - Hindi agitation was at it's peak only in 1965 and not in 1960.

I have wondered why Sivaji never got the national award. Were all South-Indian actors ignored during his peak or was it just Sivaji? Can some senior hubbers throw some light on this?

I have felt that Sivaji's movies would always have a scene or two that would let him "perform" (some might call it "show off" or "go berserk") irrespective of whether it makes sense or not. For example, in Karnan, when his son is brought in, Sivaji will get emotional and literally go berserk. He will "perform" his act oblivious to his wife. He wouldn't even console his wife. Looked so out of place. I have seen this in several movies. The rest of the cast will just be mute spectators till he completes his act. I wonder if this is what went against him.

Are there movies where his performance is consistent right throughout and is award worthy? Was there ever a buzz that he would win the national award for a particular role? Are there specific instances where his performance was clearly better than the award winner?
