Kamal Haasan was recently seen at the inauguration of the 19th Kolkata International Film festival where he was noticed interacting with the press. Kamal in the interactive session mentioned that film festivals were his temples of learning.
When the actor was asked if he attended the film festival in Kolkata because the West Bengal government did not ban the release of the magnum opus Vishwaroopam, Kamal replied saying that he is not a political animal.
He said that the state supported him because they felt he was right. Kamal also stated that he had received similar support from the state when there were glitches during the release of Hey Ram.

All nations and individuals suffer the dilemma of choosing between the virtues of valour and that of tolerance. The 21st century world citizen is even more compelled to choose one or the other by peer pressure. My experiment in practical living has educated me to guess that a judicious blend of both is most is the most pragmatic course.
Till civic duties are fully understood and inculcated in us by truly enlightened parenting, righteous wrath and valour will be the most joy producing path. A lifetime of tolerance, if not equally reciprocated by our cohabitants, is a life wasted in compromise of sometimes serfdom.
The modern Indian’s dilemma, even today, is to combat the nation’s emergencies through tolerance or a slightly faster yet violent route of valour. The height of valour is Ahimsa, opines Gandhiji. How many can scale that height? I wonder.

‘There is no separate pedestal for the performer’
"................What I am saying is, you tell them that you will not sell alcohol to people below a particular age… like that there should be adult entertainment. We must treat adults like adults.
I am not talking only about sex. I am talking about politics. There should be political freedom. The kind of freedom that was available in Periyar’s time is not there for Kamal Hassan. Even if you are bold, you don’t have freedom. Even Veeramani [leader of the Dravidar Kazhagam, founded by Periyar] does not have it.
We have made the borders tighter and tighter and tighter. Because we think everybody has a voice and everyone can raise it for any reason. We are almost gagged. The undercurrent of my film Thenali is about the sufferings of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.
I took it in a subtle manner. Madras Cafe showcased one side of the story. Even if I wish to take a film on the other side of the ethnic issue, I will not be permitted to do so. For that matter, no film on the Sri Lankan issue could be contemplated.
Here there is no freedom of expression. I, as a film artist, have no freedom, which writers such as Jayakanthan and Periyar enjoyed many years ago........"

7-11-2013 அன்று கமல்ஹாஸனுக்குப் பிறந்தநாள். அவர் புதியதாகக் கிழக்குக் கடற்கரைச்சாலையில் குடியேறியிருக்கும் இல்லத்தில் சிறப்பு அழைப்பாளர்களான நண்பர்களுக்காக ஒரு சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ந்தது.நான் சென்னையில் இருந்தேன் என்றாலும் ஒரு தயக்கம். எனக்கு பார்ட்டிகளில் ஈடுபாடில்லை. முக்கியமான காரணம் அவற்றில் எப்படி நடந்துகொள்வது என்று நாட்டுப்புறத்தானாகிய நான் இன்னமும் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை என்பதுதான். ஆனால் நண்பர் தனா என்னுடன் அவரும் வருவதாகச் சொல்லி உற்சாகமாகக் கிளம்பியதனால் செல்லலாமென முடிவெடுத்தேன்.
மெட்ராஸ் டாக்கீஸ் அலுவலகக் காரில் இரவு ஒன்பது மணிக்கு கமல் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றேன். வாசலில் அவரே நின்று அனைவரையும் வரவேற்றுக்கொண்டிருந்தார். கட்டித்தழுவி வரவேற்றார். நான் நினைத்த அளவுக்குப் பெரிய கூட்டம் இல்லை என்றாலும் எங்குபார்த்தாலும் பிரபலங்கள் என்பது ஒரு திகைப்பை உருவாக்கியது.
தமிழ்த்திரையுலகில் எனக்கு முதலில் அறிமுகமான நண்பர் கமல்.2000 வாக்கில் விஷ்ணுபுரம் வாசித்துவிட்டு ஒருநாள் என்னைத் தொலைபேசியில் அழைத்து ‘நான் கமலஹாசன் பேசறேன்’ என்று அறிமுகம்செய்துகொண்டார் ‘உங்க தீவிர வாசகன்…’
எனக்கு அப்போது யாரோ மிமிக்ரிசெய்கிறார்கள் என்ற எண்ணம்தான் இருந்தது. என்ன பேசுவதென்றும் தெரியவில்லை. அவரே அந்நாவலில் வாசித்த பல நுட்பமான இடங்களை விவரித்துப்பேசினார்.
அதன்பின் இத்தனை நாட்களில் என்னுடைய அத்தனை படைப்புகளுக்கும் உடனடி வாசகராக அவரே இருந்திருக்கிறார். கொற்றவை அவரை பெரிதும் கவர்ந்தது. தொடர்ச்சியாகப் பலமுறை கூப்பிட்டு அதைப்பற்றி பேசினார். அதன்பின் இன்றையகாந்தி. கடைசியாக அறம். அவரைக் கவராத படைப்பைப்பற்றி அவர் பெரும்பாலும் வாயைத்திறப்பதில்லை.
அவர் நட்சத்திரம் என்பதனாலேயே நான் அவரைப்பற்றி இன்றுவரை ஒரு வரிகூட எழுதியதில்லை. அவரை நேரில் சந்திப்பதையே கூடுமானவரை தள்ளிப்போட்டு வந்தேன். நேரில் சந்தித்த தருணங்கள் எல்லாமே உற்சாகமானவை. அவர் பேச்சினூடாகவே எனக்குப் பல எழுத்தாளர் பெயர்கள் – உதாரணமாக கர்ட் வேன்கட் -அறிமுகமாயின என்று சொன்னால் அவரைத்தெரிந்தவர்கள் ஆச்சரியப்பட மாட்டார்கள்.
விருந்தில் மதனைப் பார்த்தேன். சற்று உடல்நலம் குன்றியிருந்தவர் சிகிழ்ச்சைக்குப்பின் தேறி நன்றாகவே இருந்தார். செய்தியறிக்கைகள் காலப்போக்கில் இலக்கியமதிப்பு பெறுவதைப்பற்றி உற்சாகமாகப்பேசினார்.
எங்கும் தெரிந்த முகங்கள். ஹிந்து என்.ராம் முதலிய பல செய்தி ஊடக நட்சத்திரங்கள். பிரியதர்சன் முதலிய இயக்குநர்கள். விஜய் முதலிய நடிகர்கள். ஆண்ட்ரியா போன்ற நடிகைகள். அனைவரும் ஏதோ ஒருவகையில் கமலின் நெருக்கமான உள்வட்டத்தினர் என்று தெரிந்தது.
என்னை அறிந்தவர்களிடம் மட்டும் பேசியபடி சுற்றிவந்தேன். கிரேஸி மோகனைச் சந்தித்தேன். ஏற்கனவே இன்றைய காந்தி வாசித்துவிட்டு என்னிடம் தொலைபேசியில் பேசியிருக்கிறார். கு.ஞானசம்பந்தத்தைச் சந்தித்தேன். அப்பால் முக்கியஸ்தர்கள் நடுவே உற்சாகத்தழுவல்கள், அன்புக்கூச்சல்கள், புகைப்பட மின்னல்கள்….
கமல் நடுவே என்னிடம் வந்து நின்று தீவிரமாக உரையாட ஆரம்பித்தார். ஏற்கனவே பேசி நிறுத்திய புள்ளியில் இருந்து பேச ஆரம்பிப்பது அவரது வழக்கம். இலக்கியமும் வரலாறும் சந்திக்கும் இடங்கள் அவருக்கு பிடித்தமானவை. இலக்கியத்திற்கு ஒரு வரலாற்றுக்காரணத்தைச் சொல்வதில் எப்போதுமெ ஒரு நுட்பமான பார்வை அவருக்குண்டு.
வெள்ளையானை கிடைத்தது என்றார். நான் கொண்டு வர மறந்து விட்டிருந்தேன். ‘அதெல்லாம் மை காயறதுக்குள்ள இங்க வந்திரும்’ என்றார். ஐஸ்ஹவுஸின் போராட்டம் பற்றி ஏற்கனவே அவர் வாசித்து அறிந்தவற்றைச் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார். ‘எங்க ஏரியால்ல?’
நெடுநேரம் என்னிடம் மட்டுமே பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று தோன்றியது. அதிமுக்கியமனிதர்கள் பின்பக்கம் அவருக்காகக் காத்திருந்தனர். அவரது உற்சாகத்தில் விரிசலை உண்டுபண்ணவும் முடியவில்லை. ஒரு தம்பதிகளைச் சந்திக்க அவர் திரும்பியபோது நான் மெல்ல நகர்ந்துவிட்டேன்.
இரா.முருகன் வந்தார். ‘எழுத்துருச் சண்டை போடுங்க போங்க’ என்று கமல் தன்னை அனுப்பியதாகச் சொன்னார். அவரது நாடக அரங்கேற்றம் பற்றியும் அரசூர் நாவல் வரிசையில் மூன்றாவது நாவல் வரப்போவது பற்றியும் பேசிக்கொண்டோம்.
சாப்பாட்டில் என்னென்னவோ இருந்தது. நான் காய்கறிகள், பழங்கள் மட்டுமே சாப்பிடக்கூடியவன். சூப்பில் போடவேண்டிய பச்சைக்காய்கறித்துருவல்கள் மட்டுமே இருந்தன. அவற்றை எடுத்துக்கொண்டேன். சாப்ப்பிட்டபின் உள்ளே சென்று வந்திருந்தவர்களின் குடும்பத்துக் குழந்தைகளுடன் கமல் பாடி ஆடி குதூகலித்ததைப் பார்த்தேன். பன்னிரண்டு மணிக்குக் கிளம்பிவிட்டேன்.
அத்தனை வெளிச்சத்திற்குள்ளூம் அவர் வாசிப்பதற்கும் விவாதிப்பதற்கும் இடத்தைக் கண்டுகொள்வது ஆச்சரியம்தான். சென்னையின் உச்சநிலைமனிதர்கள் சூழ்ந்த அந்த இடத்தில் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது ஒரு சக எழுத்தாளரிடம் தெருமுனை டீக்கடையில் நின்று பேசிக்கொள்ளும் உணர்வே இருந்தது.
