மலைக்கள்ளன் படத்தில் எம்ஜிஆர் முஸ்லிம் பெரியவராக வயதான தாத்தாவாக, பலவிதமான மாறுவேடங்களில் தோன்றி பொருத்தமாகப் பேசி திறமையை வெளிபடுத்திப் பாராட்டு பெற்றார். அத்துடன் சண்டைக் காட்சிகளில் முழுத்திறமையையும் வெளிப்படுத்தி, ரசிகர்களின் பாராட்டையும், கைதட்டல்களையும் வாரிக் குவித்தார்.
படத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற பாடல்கள், மக்களுக்கு ஒரு புதிய எழுச்சியை கொடுத்தது. அரசியல் பிரச்சினை காரணமாக நாமக்கல்கவிஞருடன் கலைஞர் முரண்பட்டாலும்அவர் முதல்வராக இருந்தபோது நாமக்கல்கவிஞரின் குடும்பத்தின் சிரமங்களைஅறிந்து தமிழக அரசின் உதவித் தொகை வழங்குவதற்கு உத்தரவிட்டார். தமிழக அரசின்சார்பில்கட்டப்பட்ட தலைமைச் செயலகபத்துமாடிக்கட்டடத்துக்கு நாமக்கல் கவிஞர்மாளிகை எனப்பெயர் சூட்டி மகிழ்ந்தார்கலைஞர்.திருச்சியில் ஓவியன் என்ற நாடகம் எம்.ஜி.
ஆரின் முன்னிலையில் கலைஞரின் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது. அந்த விழாவிலேபேசிய கலைஞர் ""புரட்சி நடிகர்'' என எம்.ஜி.ஆரைக் குறிப்பிட்டார். அன்றிலிருந்துபுரட்சி நடிகர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்று அனைவரும் அழைத்தார்கள். பின்னர் அதுவே ""புரட்சித் தலைவர்'' என்ற பெயர் வரக்காரணமானது.

Malaikkallan (aka Malaikallan) (Tamil: மலைக்கள்ளன், English: Thief of The Hills) is a Tamil language film starring M. G. Ramachandran in the lead role. The film was released on 22 July 1954, and was "an astounding success".[1] It was the first Tamil film to win a President's Silver Medal.
Production
A blend of Robin Hood and The Mark of Zorro, written by Namakkal Kavignar Va. Ramalingam Pillai (Namakkal Kavignar). A well-known writer, poet, artist and freedom fighter, he was nominated as the Poet Laureate of the Madras Government in 1949. Malaikkallan had been prescribed as the non-detailed text for the high school curriculum in the early 50s, and the story had become very popular.
S.M.Sriramulu Naidu of Pakshiraja Studio in Coimbatore secured the rights to the story and decided to make a movie of it, in 6 languages- Tamil (Malaikkallan/ MGR), Telugu (Aggi Ramudu/ N. T. Rama Rao), Malayalam (Thaskaraveeran/ Sathyan), Kannada (Bettada Kalla/ Kalyan Kumar), Hindi (Azaad/ Dilip Kumar) and Sinhalese (Surasena). Sriramulu Naidu booked Bhanumati to play the role of heroine, Poonkothai (Tamil) and Saradha (Telugu).
Except Azaad that had music by C. Ramchandra, S. M. Subbaiah Naidu composed music for the movie in all the other languages.
Vijayapuram is a beautiful hillside hamlet appears serene and restful to a casual passerby. But the happenings there are far from tranquil. Dacoities, burglaries and even kidnappings seem to be commonplace occurrences. One established perpetuator of at least some of the crimes is Kaathavarayan, his secret accomplices being some well-known public figures like the rich young wastrel Veerarajan and the Kuttipatti Zamindar.
The other dacoit is apparently the mysterious Malaikkallan. Legends are galore on his fabulous wealth, awe-inspiring exploits, contempt for the unprincipled rich, concern for the poor and needy indeed he seems to be running a veritable empire in some hidden hillock no one actually seen him.
There is also the wealthy middle-aged bachelor Abdul Kareem, who seems to disappear at regular intervals from Vijayapuram, claiming business calls at far-off places. In this hotbed of intrigue and suspicion blooms an innocent rose Poonkothai, daughter of the upright Sokkesa Mudaliar. Veerarajan is the cousin of Poonkothai and desires to marry her, but his evil reputation ensures the impossibility of such an alliance. Having lost her mother at an early age, Poonkothai is brought up by her widowed aunt Kamakshi Ammaal. Kamakshi Ammal's only son Kumaraveeran went missing many years back.
Faced by stringent public criticism for their failure to tackle the audacious crimes, Sub-Inspector Arumugam arrives in Vijayapuram. But his assistant Constable Karuppiah is a bungling coward and is more a hindrance than a help in his investigations. It is at this juncture that one night when mudaliar is away, Poonkothai is kidnapped. The happenings of that eerie night keep the village tongues wagging for many days thereafter. Two sidekicks of Kathavarayan are found tied and hanging upside down, and a piece of Poonkothai’s jewellery is recovered from them. Kamakshi AmmaaL is found tied-up and unconscious, and a mysterious errand-boy hands over to the attending doctor a herb that revives her at once. Poonkothai is said to be in the custody of Malaikkallan, who has cleverly waylaid Kathavarayan’s men and taken away Poonkothai. Kathavarayan faces the ire and ridicule of Veerarajan at the behest of whom he had engineered Poonkothai’s kidnapping. Goaded by this humiliation, he now sends his men far and wide in search of Poonkothai. Meanwhile Poonkothai is safe in the magnificent hideout of Malaikkallan perceiving his genuine concern for the downtrodden and the reverence with which he is held by his people, her contempt and mistrust turn gradually into admiration and leads to love.
Several confounding twists and turns later the truant pieces of the puzzle fall in place. Kathavarayan and Veerarajan get their well-deserved comeuppance. Malaikkallan and Abdul Kareem both turn out to be the same person who is the long missing Kumaraveeran. All is well that ends with the happy marriage of Poonkothai and Kumaraveeran.

The crowning glory of the Coimbatore movie mogul S. M. Sriramulu Naidu's career was Malaikallan (1954). The film established M. G. Ramachandran as a box office hero. Besides Tamil, Naidu forged ahead to produce and direct Malaikallan in Telugu ( Aggi Ramudu), Malayalam ( Taskara Veeran), Kannada ( Bettadha Kalla), Hindi ( Azad) and Sinhala ( Soorasena).
The Hindi version Azad (the first film of Dilip Kumar as a swashbuckling hero, cast opposite Meena Kumari) proved a raving hit! (Years later, Naidu told this writer that he had dreams of making it in English but wiser counsel prevailed to his benefit!)
Malaikallan was written by the famous Tamil scholar and poet Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai, inspired by “Mark of Zorro” and “Robin Hood.” The screenplay and dialogue were by Mu. Karunanidhi. S. M. Subbaiah Naidu scored the music, while the lyrics were penned by Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai and Thanjai Ramaiah Das. Bhanumathi played the female lead well supported by D. Balasubramaniam, M. G. Chakrapani, T. S. Durairaj and P. S. Gnanam. The film won a Central Government award. The music also contributed to its success, with one of the songs, a satire on social conditions, ‘Ethanai kaalam thaan ematruvaar indha naatiley', becoming a hit. This song rendered off-screen by T. M. Soundararajan and filmed on MGR riding a horse set the trend for many future MGR movies which had similar thematic songs sung by TMS.
All the versions of Malaikallan were box office hits and the best of them was Azad, the Hindi version. This film broke all box office records and proved to be a moneyspinner. Naidu was a no-nonsense person who never tolerated indiscipline and believed in calling a spade a spade. While launching Azad (1955), he approached Dilip to play the lead. The tragedy king of Hindi Cinema was amused that a Tamil film producer based in Coimbatore, whom he had never heard of before, should have come all the way to Bombay to engage him to play a swashbuckling role in his first Hindi film production! Naidu, who would never take ‘no' for an answer, persuaded Dilip to work in the Hindi version. He also brought on board Meena Kumari which proved to be one of the memorable movies of Hindi Cinema. During that period, there were no star-hotels in Coimbatore, and Naidu took Dilip around many bungalows in the city and the rooms in Pakshiraja Studios. Dilip chose to stay in the studio and so did Meena Kumari — something incredible today.
The pleasing music score by C. Ramchandra was also a major attraction with lyrics by Rajendra Krishan. Songs such as ‘Radha na bole re', ‘Apalam chapalam' and ‘Kitna haseen hai mausam' were hits. Naidu used some of these tunes in some versions of the film.
Not many are aware that the multi-talented Tamil filmmaker A. P. Nagarajan was cast as a police inspector wearing a turban and all. However, after shooting some scenes with him, Naidu for some reason chose to replace him with M. G. Chakrapani.
Even after half a century and more, Malaikallan, one of the most memorable movies of Tamil Cinema, sustains interest and is often revived on television.
Remembered for: the popular storyline, tuneful music, excellent onscreen narration, and good performances by MGR and Bhanumathi.

மலைக்கள்ளனுக்குப் பிறகு எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் சிவாஜிகணேசனும் இணைந்து நடித்த “கூண்டுக்கிளி” வெளிவந்தது. டி.ஆர். ராமண்ணா டைரக்ஷனில், ஆர்.ஆர்.பிக்சர்சார் தயாரித்த படம் இது. விந்தன் வசனம் எழுதினார். இருபெரும் நடிகர்கள் சேர்ந்து நடித்த படம் என்பதால், ரசிகர்கள் ஆவலோடு எதிர்பார்த்திருந்தனர். ஆனால், அது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படமாகவோ, சிவாஜி படமாகவோ அமையாதது மட்டுமல்ல, ஒரு நல்ல படமாகவும் அமையவில்லை. முக்கியமாக கதை சரியாக இல்லாததால், படம் தோல்வி அடைந்தது

இதன்பின் தமிழ்நாட்டின் முதல் வண்ணப்படமான “அலிபாபாவும் 40 திருடர்களும்” படத்தில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்தார். மாடர்ன் தியேட்டர்ஸ் தயாரித்த இப்படம், 1956 பொங்கல் தினத்தில் வெளிவந்து, வெற்றி முரசு கொட்டியது.
பழம் பெரும் படத்தயாரிப்பாளரான லேனா செட்டியார், தமது கிருஷ்ணா பிக்சர்ஸ் சார்பில் “மதுரை வீரன்” கதையை பிரமாண்டமாகத் தயாரித்தார். எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு ஜோடியாக பானுமதி, பத்மினி ஆகிய இருவரும் நடித்தனர். மற்றும் டி.எஸ். பாலையா, ஓ.ஏ.கே.தேவர், ஆர்.பாலசுப்பிரமணியம், டி.கே.ராமச்சந்திரன், ஈ.வி.சரோஜா, எம்.ஆர்.சந்தான லட்சுமி, “மாடி” லட்சுமி, என்.எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணன், டி.ஏ.மதுரம் ஆகியோரும் நடித்தனர். கர்ண பரம்பரைக் கதையான மதுரை வீரனுக்கு, திரைக்கதை _வசனம் எழுதினார், கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன். பாடல்களை கண்ணதாசனுடன் உடுமலை நாராயணகவி, தஞ்சை ராமையாதாஸ் ஆகியோர் எழுத ஜி.ராமநாதன் இசை அமைத்தார். டைரக்ஷன் யோகானந்த்.

“Late M.S. Subbulakshmi was performing at the World Tamil Conference in Madurai and MGR entered the hall. He stood for a moment, went out again, removed his sandals and came in again. It showed the respect he had for MS,” said T.S. Sundaranathan, son of nagawaram maestro Tiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai, who was a State government PRO then.
MGR had directed the officials to record all the concerts of the conference so that he could listen to them at leisure. It was MGR who promoted Mandolin U. Shrinivas, when he began making news as a prodigy, who could handle the western instrument with remarkable ease. “I received a call from the [then] Chief Minister and wondered whether we had made some mistake. He just wanted the telephone number and address of Shrinivas,” recalled Sampath Kumar, a former Doordarshan official.
But Shrinivas did not have a phone at that time. “The Chief Minister’s secretaries visited my house and wanted to know whether I could perform at a function. Since I had a concert on the same day, they gave me another date and the occasion — a felicitation function for actor Kamal Hassan for his role in the film ‘Ek duje ke liye’. Mr. MGR and our present Chief Minister Jayalalithaa listened to the entire concert,” said Shrinivas, while gratefully acknowledging the role played by MGR in his career. MGR even declared him a musician of the State government. Shrinivas was just eleven at that time.

MGR and Devar were close friends. Devar films first movie was Thaiku Pin Tharam. From 1956 to 1972 Devar Films produced 16 MGR movies. All the movies had social themes no Historical movies. M.M.A. Chinnappa Devar was the first Producer and who had confidence to book MGR for his subsequent movies in General Hospital during January 1967 when MGR was recuperating from M.R.Radha incident.

The only film company which released two movies in one year with MGR as lead is Devar films the years are 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967 and 1968. The first colour movie of Devar Films is Nalla Neram. MGR gave call sheet for 7 days for Mugarasi and the same movie was shot in 13 days. Other movies shooting was completed in short span are Kannithai and Thanipiravi was completed in 3 weeks, Vivasahi and Kadhal vaganam were completed in 5 weeks, Kudumba Thalaivan, Thozhilali, Thaikuthalaimagan, Ther Thiruvizha, Vettaikaran and Dharmam Thalaikakum were completed in 2 months, Thaisollaithatathey, Thaiyaikatha Thanaiyan and Neethikupin pasam were completed in 3 months.

உங்களுடைய மிகச்சிறந்த படம் எது
எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களிடம் நான் ஒரு முறை என்னுடைய நல்லபடம் வரும் போது நான் உங்களை அழைக்கிறேன். வந்து பார்த்துவிட்டு என்னை வாழ்த்துங்கள் என்றேன். அதற்கு அவர் நன்றாக இல்லாத படத்தில் கூட நடிக்கிறாயா? ஒவ்வொரு படத்தின் வெற்றியும் நம் கையில் தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். காலையில் ஒன்று மாலையில் மற்றொன்று என்று பல படங்களில் ஒரே நேரத்தில் நடித்தால் நம்முடைய வெற்றிப் படங்களைக் காட்டிலும் தோல்விப்படங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை தான் அதிகமாக இருக்கும். என்று கூறினார். அப்போது எடுத்த முடிவைத்தான் இப்போது நான் செயல்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். ஒரு படத்தை முடித்தபின் தான் அடுத்த படத்தை ஆரம்பிப்பேன். நூற்றுக்கும் அதிகமான படங்களில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் நடித்திருந்தாலும், அவைகளில் பல ஒரே பாணியில் இருப்பதாகக்கூட தோன்றலாம். ஆனால் அத்தனை படங்களிலும், மது மாது சூது, சிகரெட் இவைகள் இல்லாமலே தாய், தங்கை இவர்களின் பாசத்தை மையமாக வைத்து கோடானுகோடி மக்களின் இதயங்களைக் கவர்ந்திருக்கிறார். வித்தியாசங்கள் வேண்டும் என்று எத்தனை கலைஞர்களைக் கேட்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் அப்படிப்பட்ட வித்தியாசங்கள் எதுவும் இல்லாமல், ஏழைப்பங்காளனாகவே அனைத்து படங்களிலும் நடித்து வெற்றி பெற்ற ஒரே நடிகர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் தான்.
