The film is about Mr. Chowdary, an honest police officer. The main plot of the story is about misunderstanding, resulting in his own son becoming his sworn enemy. Chowdary is successful in his police service, has a devoted wife and is blessed with a son. The son grows up to be a crook indulging in unlawful activities. He is sent to Junveiline jail. On his return he gets a job in a chit fund company but embezzles the funds from his employer but falls prey to Chowdary who lays a clever trap to nab him with the help of his force. The son goes to jail on his On release from the prison, the son swears revenge on Chowdary. He tries to extract his revenge but remanis unsccuessful .He shoots his own son while he tries to sell secrets of our country. Chowdary is awarded the police medal or Thangappadhakkam.
It is a simple story told in a powerful manner. Sivaji has lived the character so much so that several of his successors( Monndru Mugam -Rajini, Vijaykanth- Rajadurai have drawn inspiration in playing the upright police officer. His body language was awesome in variety – as the loving husband, the affectionate father, the dutiful officer . The supporting cast of K.R. Vijaya, Srikanth and V.K. Ramaswamy also did their parts well. Songs in the film were superhits

1.Thangapadam was first made as a drama just like Parasakthi, Manohara, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Gouravam, Gananoli, Par Magale Paar, Veitnam veedu. Its a huge challenge as audience might have watched it already

While the play was filmed, slight changes were made in the screenplay like introducing the second Cho (Vyapuri alias Vaigai Valavan) and bringing in the portions of SP Choudry's younger days.This drama was intially acted my Mr Senthamarai in the name of Irandil Ondru , NT saw this drama , politely asked him to give it for Sivaji Nadaga Mandram, re sketched the drama (fine tuning ) , The paly inaugurated in mumbai and NT had no time for rehearsals so he had his troupe do the rehearsal and got them all to travel by train.He was booked in first class, but got in with the rest of the troupe and had mahendran(the writer-later director) read the play - his part, while the others played their parts.one reading was over, they broke for lunch anb that evening again NT came from his compartment,got mahendran to read the play again.next day when he entered mahendran took out the script to read when he said .."vendam,rehearsal pakkalam" and proceeded to say all his lines....without any error.
