Loyalist: A fan paying homage to former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.G. Ramachandran on the occasion of his birth anniversary in Chennai on Saturday.
CHENNAI: His evergreen film songs woke up many of his fans on Saturday.
Hundreds of fans of ‘Puratchi Thalaivar’ celebrated the immortal star’s birthday on Saturday by distributing sweets, playing his songs on loudspeakers and organising medical camps.
S. Vijayan, founder of the Tamizhaga MGR Manidha Neya Mandram, said MGR’s films always had a message and the actor showed respect for every character in the film.
There are several cinema theatres in the city that run his films from time to time.
Fan clubs, including the Kalaivendan MGR Bhakthargal Arakattalai, organise programmes in his memory.
“He is my God,” averred die-hard fan S.S. Perumal, who is treasurer of the Arakattalai.
The association members mostly spend Sunday evenings at cinema theatres watching special re-runs of MGR films.
Helping the needy
“Today, we organised a function to mark the day and listened to our favourite songs. We have planned to distribute clothes to orphans and elders at a later date,” Mr. Perumal added.
Another ardent fan said, “MGR radiated positive energy and his songs are foot-tapping. I listen to them on the go and whenever I have time to spare.”
Apolitical
The love for MGR is apolitical.
“I do not belong to any political party and though I have watched only a few of his films I respect him for the way he bequeathed his property to the less-privileged,” said Raju, an autorickshaw driver, who hails from Madurai.
Many of his friends at the CIT Nagar autorickshaw stand celebrated the actor’s birthday by distributing sweets.

Fans throng Tiruvallur for MGR temple consecration

Chennai: Arulthangam of Erode balanced his seven-year-old son,Ezhumalai on his shoulder against the buffeting crowd as he stood on tiptoe to catch a glimpse of actor and former chief minister MG Ramachandrans idol.He was one among the 2,000 people who had travelled from all over Tamil Nadu to an MGR temple in a small village,Nathamedu in Tiruvallur district,located 40km from Chennai.
On Monday,a consecration ceremony of the idol was conducted by priests,drawing a big crowd of MGR fans.I have been an ardent fan of his since childhood, said Arulthangam.To be able to visit a temple built for the Puratchi Thalaivar himself and to be able to witness a ceremony like this is an honour indeed.My entire family accompanied me.
The temple itself was built by an MGR fan,Kalaivanan who sold his property and pawned his wifes jewellery to garner funds for it.Costing over Rs 21.5 lakh,the temple has three idols of MGR,a six-foot tall one in the inner sanctum,a two-foot long idol inside the temple and a third one on the temple tower.We performed an alankaram (dressing up) ceremony for the six-foot tall idol, said Kalaivanan,who was one of organisers.And for the two-foot idol,we performed over 12 different kinds of abhishekams (offerings) using 60 litres of milk,curd,coconut water,panchamirtam and holy ash among others. The bigger idol was clothed in the usual attire of MGR,the politician,with a white dhoti and shirt,a gold wrist watch,a fur cap on his head and dark glasses.People then garlanded the idol, said Kalaivanan.
Standing apart from the crowd was a photograph of the leader adorned with a few relics donated by the actors surviving relatives.Sudha Vijayan,wife of MGRs adopted daugther along with his grandnephew,Pratik,donated a shirt of the actor for display in the temple.To B S Raju,temple committee member,the crowning moment was when he poured a pot of milk over the idol.The milk offering was only by 108 select members nominated by the committee, he said proudly.
