A. R. Rahman was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India to a musically affluent Mudaliar Tamil family. His father R. K. Shekhar, was a film music composer and conductor for Tamil as well as Malayalam films.
ARR began early training in music under Master Dhanraj. At the age of 11, he started playing musical instruments in the orchestra of Malayalam composer and a close friend of Rahman's father, M. K. Arjunan.

AFAIK, R.K. Sekar was not from Kerala.
RK Sekar - tamizh mudhaliaar. Adhaan thelivaa wikila pOtturukke. He worked for mallu films. That is the connection with Keral. Unless Rahman's mom was from Kerala there is no poorveegam saatveegam and all in kerala
"Dileep's father R. Kulasekhar or R.K. Sekhar, as he preferred to call himself, was originally native of a place
called Kizhanoor near Thiravalloor in the Tamil Nadu State of India."
