'enna paatu paada' is a song I had heard recently. This is a part of the CD which has songs by Raja, released by the Saregama folks. Wonderful songs all of them. 'vekkada aasai' part always brings a smile on my lips. (Jai, isn't this from 'Chakkalathi'? Maybe you meant the lyricist was 'Pulamai Pittan'?)
The site said the movie is pulamai pithan - I felt that there was no movie by that name - hence the query...Quote:

The raaga used in this song is also something we discussed sometime back (I know u brought it up when discussing KAragattakaari songs) - it is the same as 'Sivagaami nenapinile' - I remember u were making a mention that it is traditionally a serious raaga and IR has pioneered the use of it in a funny way.
Surprised to also see Baradwaj Rangan discussing funny freak out songs in Thamizh film music and the songs he has taken for analysis are both by Raaja.
1. Aattu kutti muttayittu from 16 vayadhinile and
2. Aasai kiLiye from thambikku endha ooru very nifty aaarabhi violated in funny ways for the context..
Thanks Jai for pointing me to the Baradwaj Rangan article. Along with Aarabhi we can add Shanmukhapriya to the list. 'kadhal kasakuddaiya' is every bit as funky as 'aasai kilye'. Also the song from 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi', "enna samayalo". It had a different tune in Telugu. That was also a funky song, "randi randi randi".
Jai,
Listen to this song from 'Padikatha Pannayar'. "konadha senkarumbu". Seems to be either Malayamarutham or Valaji.
Also listen to 'ada onnun teriyadha paapa'. Absolutely freaky and absolutely rocking. A raga like Shanmukhapriya is taken and totally turned on its head. A very strong carnatic flavor ragam forms the basis of this folk type fun song with shenoy and thavil providing superb accompaniment. Only a crazy guy can conceive Shanmukhapriya like this. Hear how he makes Malaysia do the raga bit in the middle of charanam. Rocking, rocking, rocking stuff. And the thing which surprises me even more is that this is a Sivaji movie!!!

"Aasai kiLiye Arai kilo puLiye" - A fantastic Aarabi there, but spoilt by Malaysia Vasudevan who goes flat at many places :((
Another eve teasing song in Shanmugapriya is "abisheka nerathil" from "Azhage unnai Aaraadhikkiren" , SPB's irrepressible revelry :))
Usharyya Usharu....form theertha kariyiniley.
I feel whatever songs IR sung for janakaraj would be more suitable for this thread..
கட்ட வண்டி கட்ட வண்டி காப்பாத்த வந்தவன்டி
If you want energy, this is the best boost available around!
Got a dose this morning after a tiresome / sleep deprived night due to helping my son and his classmates for their "science olympiad" prep; dropped them early morning at University of Michigan, Dearborn campus and on the way back home, கட்ட வண்டி!
This song is a pure joy ride in typical IR orchestration of early 80's - freaking out with guitar!
Now listening..barla..barla from ellam inbamayam...
this song should be in top 5 on this list..
MV sings with very much freaky....i never heard MV like this..
Me too listening to 'Ellam Inba Mayam' today. Not only 'barla barla' but every song in this movie is a freak out song!!! I had initially mentioned that 'Jyoti' was an album dedicated to freak out songs. You can ass 'Ellam Inba Mayam' to the list. Three songs are absolutely dedicated to craziness and one song has wonderfully freaked out instrumentation. 'maman voodu' is a lovely take on 'rara venugopala'. Absolute iconoclasm.

Also listening to 'vengaya sambarum' from 'Paneer Pushpangal'. Ofcourse, with the other three songs being all time great songs, this song generally gets pushed to the background or fast forwarded. This is another great freakout song. Starts off as a great Shanmukhapriya, in between there is suddenly some singing reminiscent of MKT and towards the end, the songs shifts to Nadanamakriya, doing a different take on 'Ae teeruga' song. Lyrics complement the craziness perfectly.
