He says it when they get access to cellphone networks to see where a text is coming from IIRC. I got the feeling that Baldwin snuck in a little politically incorrect ad-lib there. :)

Baldwin's character along with Queenan and Costigan are the "clean" cops in the film, also that black guy who gets killed along with Caprio and the other rat-cop. I still have doubts over Dignam. In Making of the film, it is revealed Kubrick forced George C.Scott to overplay his part (which infuriated him). Scott is terrific with all the lines.
Actually, the bite in the dialogue peaks in Gen. Turgidson's immediate clarification. "But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks."

Yes. Such a brilliant piece of dialogue. In this scene, Kubrick reflects on how the (oppressive) audience reacts to stories of people who are "unlike everyone else." I was struck by the denouement. The "Poodle" gimmick came out of nowhere. This one is lot more affecting than say, Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I'd buy the contrivance every single time I watch it. First real glimpse of greatness, and a nice start to his career after the vapid "Killer's kiss", which had lot less in it, apart from its genre stylistics.Quote:
