I remember back when Kozhi Koovudhu and Ilamai Kalangal albums were released at the same time. My cousin had a hard time choosing which one to buy (he had money for only 1). He choose KK eventually. Was certainly a very hard choice to make - so much of quality and magical musical abundance back then ....

This is another good way to write about the 4 decades of Raja. How you have grown with me, maybe gone away from him for some time and how you came back. Or how you stayed back and don't want to travel any more :D This would add a good dimension to the topic to a dry analysis.

16 வயதினிலே பாடல்களைத் தொடர்ந்து ஒரு காதல் தேவதை, தாலாட்டு பிள்ளை என்னை, உறவுகள் தொடர்கதை, பன்னீர் புஷ்பங்களே போன்ற பாடல்கள் எங்களுக்கு(சென்ற இடுகையில் குறிப்பிட்ட 'ரிப்பீட்' நண்பன்) பிடித்திருந்தது. ஆப்போதெல்லாம் ரேடியோவிலும், என் நண்பன் வீட்டு ரெக்கார்டு பிளேயரிலும் திருமண விழாக்களிலும் தான் பாடல்கள் கேட்க இயலும். அந்த காலகட்டத்தில் தான் எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் ஒரு புதிய "ரெக்கார்டிங் சென்டர்" ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். அது எங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து ஒரு 25 நிமிடம் நடக்கும் தொலைவில் இருந்தது(எங்களுக்கு 10 நிமிட ஓட்டம்). தினமும் பள்ளி முடிந்து வந்ததுமே பம்பரத்தைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு அங்கே ஓடி போய், "அண்ணே புதுசா வந்திருக்குற இளையராஜா பாட்ட போடுங்க" என்போம். அவரும் எங்களுக்காக பாடல்களை ஒலிக்கச் செய்வார். பம்பரம் விளையாடிக் கொண்டே பாடல்களை கேட்டு மகிழ்வோம். இதனூடே ஒரு நாள் காலை இலங்கை வானொலியைக் கேட்டுக்கொன்டே பள்ளிக்குக் கிளம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கையில் அப்துல் ஹமீத் அறிவிக்கிறார்.... "சிட்டுக்குருவி என்ற திரைப்படத்திற்காக இளையராஜாவின் இசையில் எஸ்.பி.பாலசுப்பிரமயணியமும் பி.சுசீலாவும்". என் கண்மணி உன் காதலி என்று தொடங்குகிறது அந்தப் பாடல், நான் வானொலிப் பெட்டியின் அருகிலேயே நின்று விட்டேன். அப்பொழுது இருந்த என்னுடைய உணர்ச்சிகளை வார்த்தைகளால் விளக்க முடியவில்லை. மனதில் அந்த பாடலை பாட முயன்று கொண்டு வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியே வந்ததும் முன்னே என் நண்பன் நடந்து செல்வதைப் பார்த்தேன். அவனருகே ஓடிசென்று, "எலே, புதுப் பாட்ட கேட்டியா???? கருவாட்டு கூட முன்னால போ...." என்றேன். அவன் இல்லை என்றதும், நான் அவனுக்கு அந்தப் பாடலைப் பற்றி சொல்லி "உனக்கு கண்டிப்பாகப் பிடிக்கும் என்றேன்". மாலை வீட்டிற்க்கு வந்ததும் துணிகளை மாற்றி விட்டு நாங்கள் இருவரும் ரெக்கார்டிங் சென்டரை நோக்கி ஓடுகிறோம்.(கோலிக்காய் 'சீசன்' வந்து விட்டதால் டவுசர் பாக்கெட்டில் கோலி குன்டுகள் குலுங்குகின்றன :lol: ). தொலைவில் இருந்தே, "அண்ணே 'என் கண்மணி, என் கண்மணி'" என்று தொண்டையைக் கிழித்துக் கொண்டே வந்து சேர்ந்தோம். பாடலைக் கேட்டதும் இருவருக்கும் ஒரே மகிழ்ச்சி, மீண்டும் மீண்டும் கேட்டு வரிகளை எழுதினோம். ஆனால் 'சூப்பர் மார்க்கெட்டு' என்பது மட்டும் விளங்கவில்லை. (எங்கள் கிராமத்தில் சிறிய சந்தையைத் தவிர எதையும் நாங்கள் பார்த்ததில்லை). இந்தப் பாடலிலிருந்து நாங்கள் பாடல் வரிகளை எழுதி வைத்துப் பாட ஆரம்பித்தோம்.

சிட்டுக்குருவியைத் தொடர்ந்து வந்தது ஒரு பெருவெள்ளம். இளமை ஊஞலாடுகிறது, காற்றினிலே வரும் கீதம், சட்டம் என் கையில், முள்ளும் மலரும், கிழக்கே போகும் ரயில், திருக்கல்யாணம் போன்ற பாடல்களை தினமும் கேட்டு மகிழ்வோம். முதலில் கிடைக்கும் தாட்களில் எழுதி வைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நாங்கள், ஒரு நோட்டுப் புத்தகதில் எழுதி வைத்துக் கொள்வதென்று முடிவு செய்தோம். ஆனால் பாட்டெழுதுவதற்கு நோட்டு வேண்டும் என்று அப்பாவிடம் கேட்டால் என்ன கிடைக்கும் என்று அறிந்திருந்ததால் கேட்கவில்லை. இப்படியிருக்க ஒரு நாள் புத்தக அலமாரியை எதற்கோ திறந்த போது என் அப்பாவினுடைய எழுதாத பழைய டைரி ஒன்று கண்ணில் பட்டது. அன்று மாலையே அந்த டைரி ரெகார்டிங் சென்டரில். முன்னே தாட்களில் எழுதி வைத்திருந்த பாடல்கள் எல்லாம் டைரிக்கு இடம் மாறியது. பின் வேறு சில புதிய பாடல்களையும் எழுதிவிட்ட பிற்கு வீட்டுக்குக் புறப்பட்டோம். ஓடிகொன்டுவந்த என் நண்பன் சட்டென்று நின்று என்னிடம் "லேய் நில்லு, நம்ம 'பாட்டு புக்' க :D வக்கிறதுக்கு ஒரு நல்ல எடம் பாக்கணும்" என்று சொல்ல, அதை எங்கள் வீட்டின் அருகே ஒரு மறைவிடத்தில் வைத்தோம். தினமும் மாலை எங்கள் பாட்டு புக்கை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு 'சென்டர்'க்கு சென்று வெளியாகும் பாடல்களை எழுதி வந்தோம். இப்படி ஒரு மாலை சென்டருக்கு போனபோது நாங்கள் அதுவரைக் கேட்டிறாத ஒரு புதிய திரைப்படப் பாடல் ஓலித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. அப்படட்தின் அனைத்துப் பாடல்களும் எங்களை ஒரு புதிய உலகுக்கே கூட்டிச் சென்றன. அதுவரை கேட்டிராத ஒரு துல்லியமான இசை. சென்டர் அண்ணன் என்னிடம், "வயலினையும் கித்தாரயும் கேள் எவ்வளவு அருமையா இருக்குன்னு" என்றார். அதுவரை பாடல் வரிகளையும் மெட்டையுமே கவனித்து வந்த எங்களுக்கு ஒரு புதிய அனுபவம் இசைக் கருவிகளை கேட்பதென்பது. படத்தின் பெயர் என்னவென்று உங்களுக்குச் சொல்ல வேண்டியதில்லை...... 'ப்ரியா'வே தான். மீண்டும் மீண்டும் போடச் செய்து எழுத முற்பட்டோம். ஒரு பாடலின் ஆரம்ப வரிகள் மட்டும் என்னவோ 'ஹத்தியக்குசக்காவா' என்று ஒன்றுமே புரிபடவில்லை. இருந்தாலும் முடிந்தவரை எழுதினோம். ப்ரியா திரைப்படப் பாடல்களில் வையலின், கித்தார், ஆர்கன் என்று கேட்க ஆரம்பித்தது இன்று Bassline, Strings, Rythm, Ensemble, Counterpoint என பலவற்றை அறிந்துகொள்ள தூண்டுதலாய் இருக்கிறது.

Lovely writing. I second whatever app_eng says. Raja did take along an entire generation with him. And talking to many youngsters I realize that he has been slowly but steadily pulling them in as well. Our's is a land seeped in music and it would be surprising if youngsters, on growing up, don't discover Raja.

Between 4:47 to 5:09 of this video - Phil Collins explains how he has used D minor shifting to C and B flat, back to C - the D minor chord was used to give the slightly sad feel and the combo of all these chords was done to break the monotony of the initial percussion beat acting as a link to the next part when the booming beats begin!

the same chords/style (as of Phil collins from the first video) has been used to create that 'space' which sets the tone/feel for the entire song!! and its instantly loveable and appeals to my musical sensibilities (am sure several others as well)
its the initial use of these chords that makes 'kadavul ullame' evergreen carrying a certain punch - which i longed to understand, but this phil collins video kind of enlightened me since it sounded very close to IR's chord usage in that song, giving the same feel!
somehow IMHO, IR does not use these kinds of chords, or use chord in this style any longer, and hence i think the richness is gone from his songs - perhaps the use of synthesizers have robbed him of the 'space' required to indulge in such chords usage ???

இந்த நான்கு தசாப்தங்களின் ராஜாவின் இசை பற்றிய அறிவார்ந்த அலசல்கள் எவ்வளவு முக்கியமோ அதே போல நமது வாழ்வில் அவரது இசை எந்த அளவு தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது என்பதும் முக்கியம். இரண்டும் இணையும் போதுதான் இந்த thread முழுமையடைகிறது என்பது என் அபிப்ராயம். முதலில் அவரது இசை நம் மனதைத்தானே பாதித்தது!.

That's exactly the feeling I had expressed earlier, that Raja needs to be approached both from musical point of view and emotional point of view. Generally the emotional attachment of song we have heard in our younger days is very high. It takes a lot of effort to reasses the song when your musical sensibilities change. There are many Hindi songs which are close to my heart. Songs like 'Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai'. I still like the song but I would probably not rate it as a great song. (Not that the rating matters but when you are logically assessing music you need to be true to yourself.) When it comes to Raja it so happens that when you re-assess the songs which you loved, you find that they are _better_ musically than what you thought they were !!! Such are his creations.
Punnaimaran is doing a great job, providing us with the emotional experience which resonates with a lot of people here. I am sure as Punnaimaran's musical knowledge grew, his love for those songs grew much more. I can't say that of many of my favorite songs of 70s or 80s. I had to drop many on the wayside.

I wud also like to make an appeal to fellow hubbers to list out a song or number of songs by raaja which clearly defined a paradigm shift in the last 4 decades....
It could be a orchestration (mostly) or the way he composed the tune...
For example taking the folk songs alone in annakkili even though folk feeling intact he experimented lot with western instruments but in virumandi its a altogether different experience much richer in using the local flavor or the song like "kottaiya vittu vettaikku pogum" in chinna thaayi... also wen it comes to ramarajan films its again something very very different from the above..
I dont know whether we can really list out songs this way... :confused2:
eagle, during the mid 1990s, especially initial post-symphony years, IR did stuff that were very different from his pre-symphony years - either they became too subtle, or way too sophisticated or maybe the opposite, i cant put my finger on it - songs of 'poovarasan' (the gentle breezy feel of the strings, maybe too much of tremolo/sliding effect ?), songs of the film featuring 'arumbum thalire' (used chords that IMHO, IR never did before), are few examples
Thx irir123, this is something i have never paid attention to. heard "arumbum thalire" but used to think it was not in tune with the times.... in pooavrasan "raasathi" song is amazing one in terms of orchestration...
the one song which i didnt listen to or probably disappeared from the scene quickly but discovered later is " meetatha oru veenai" from poonthottam whenever i hear the song now (i hear it too often) i get a feeling this is pure classic , a mini symphony... yeah i can see something he tried very different post symphony years... but unfortunately this phase is missed out by many of us HCIR fans...
eagle - not to nitpick, but we shd desist from using the word 'symphony' for anything and everything - the correct word is 'orchestral' - even for Hey Ram, the word 'symphonic' is incorrectly used to refer to the BGMs - thats coz, most ppl dont have any idea of what a symphony means - a symphony is a separate whole piece of work extending over an hours period, with several movements, whereas all that IR does is use short to very short motifs in films - the 'meetadha oru veenai' is rich in chords, orchestration of different gadgets, layering and yes, its indeed a masterpiece from a film music, or a popular cultural musical context, but 'symphonic' is a very wrong word to use here

Regarding Raja's various phases, one place where we can look for his changing style would be in Malayalam film music. If you check out the movies of 80s, all the songs have very similar orchestration of his Tamil songs. In the second half og 90s you can clearly see the shift in orchestration towards the synthesizer but he had kept the melodic quotient intact. Some examples are the songs from 'Oru Yathra Mozhi', 'Punnara Poo' and 'Shivamallipoove' from Friends, 'Sharadendu Paadi' and 'Varna Vrindavanam' from Kaliyoonjal. Here the melodies are distinctly different from what he gave in Tamil those days. I have a feeling that he deliberately made the melodic constructions in Tamil simpler keeping with the trend of those times (simple with respect to what he was doing earlier but complex compared to other composers of those days.) In Malayalam he still retained the same complexity, even if synth was used. The other thing that didn't change was his focus on melody when it came to Malayalam films.
Ofcourse, in case of Raja, it is not easy to come to such generic ons conclusion because this was the time that 'Kalapani' and 'Guru' happened. Inspite of all the orchestral grandeur, I feel both of them as basically melodic albums. The accent in 'Kalapani' is clearly on melody and 'Guru' is combinaion of both melody and orchestral splendour.
In short, in the Malayalam films of 90s, Raja showed how the trend of synthesizers can be harnessed in favour of melody and when opportunities arose for him to show his orchestration brillance he rose to the occassion in grand style. As usual.
I agree with Suresh. His Malayalam albums are always a cut different from his tamil. His Telugu works too, were bordered on the divide between Mass & Class and in a way, the telugu songs were predictable.Predictable in the sense of genres, not the tunes. We can clearly see if it was Chiranjeevi's songs or Raghavendra Rao's songs etc.All his telugu songs can come under one bracket, except K.Vishwanath or Vamsy's films may be. In tamil, his wings spread very widely.
But in Malayalam, his work is distinctly different from his Telugu work or Tamil work.And as Suresh rightly pointed out, the shift to Synth in Malayalam is evident in his 90s works.Even in telugu he did the same, with lot of synth work.But somehow it did mot click much (compared to the way he clicked so vibrantly in 80s) with the telugu audience.Added to that,lot of these badly made tamil films of 90s were badly dubbed into telugu (Example: Police Adhikaari, Saadhu etc), which never caught the fancy of the audience.The music too was not that great.I think thats where he lost the telugu audience.
In Malayalam however, he gave films occassionally and ensured that every film had good songs.
I am with Suresh on the revisit value of Raja songs. Except for Salilda and SD Burman, most of the Hindi old songs that used to have a pride of place in my heart have lost their lustre in terms of excellence - you still have the emotional connect but they dont appeal anymore as music. This is not true of Raja where you seem to add a layer of appreciation every time you revisit. I'd emphatically state that this is the case for me w.r.t MSV also viz a viz his peers.
MSV, Raja, Salilda - this would be my trinity of Indian film music
I dont think so, for me atleast. The works of Naushad or Madan Mohan are complete class apart and it is not plain emotional connect, but the ideas that i stumble upon even now.Quote:

Jaidev was another composer who never gave a substandard song. Salil Chaudhary too.
Even RD Burman.I feel sad that people today associate RD for only Dum Maro Dum or Piya Tu or Churaliya Hai. His best was even beyond them like in Khushboo, Kinaara,Manoranjan etc.
And there were lot of others, like Ghulam Mohammed, O.P.Nayyar,Anil Biswas, Hansraj Behl,Ravi who belted out sheer nuggets which were just songs for me when i was growing up but today I move beyond the nostalgia and analyze them. They have so many wonderful ideas or layers and stuff like that. Even a very little known composer Called Kanu Roy, scored for hardly dozen films may be,but beautiful songs.
For me, the revisit value of these songs is more because of musical richness rather than emotional connect. Yes, there are songs of emotional connect too,but i have outgrown all that.I discovered a good amount of music, REAL music, of these composers, in the last 10years may be, after my musical awareness began to mature.It so happened that i found many songs, that were playing in my house since i was a kid, actually did have that richness and it is not just a popular appeal or nostalgia or emotional connect.

What I meant is that many of the songs I held dear I dropped off from the list of best songs as my musical awareness grew. These were replaced by newer songs. (Newer not in chronological sense but in the sense that I had heard them recently. I don't want to give examples here as it will lead us into HFM debate. ) Only in the case of few directors has the sense of awe remained and all of them are oldies except Raja. I probably have a bigger list f MDs than Plum but even then I don't think there are as many songs that remained in their unshakable position as Raja's songs have been.

And I couldn't resist the digression. I hold Anil Biswas in very high esteem and consider him a better MD than Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen and others. Naushad's handled ragas in a very traditional way. (Many critics in fact accuse him of taking a bandish and making a song out of it.) If you wanted more imaginative usage of Raga you had to go to Anilda, Roshan or Madanmohan. As I said, this is a different debate altogether and belong to a different forum.

I know that neither you nor plum meant that others were not good. you both obviously have listened to others and have your favourites too. But I am also talking about songs that remained unshakeable as raja's songs have been. A song from Naushad's Amar or Anil Biswas's Taraana or Salilda's Parakh or Madan Mohan's songs hold me captive in admiration and awe, in their own dimension and degree and an IR song too does it in its own way. I dont know how, but my admiration levels for those composers' works didnt drop even after listening to IR's works. Even today,i listen to all those works by others, appreciating the musical richness/ideas/methods instead of pure nostalgic emotional connect.
And Same applies to my admiration levels for some songs that have come up in recent times, by some composers in Hindi film music or Malayalam film music or Tamil film music. Ofcourse, there are some songs like i have mentioned which might not appeal 'musically' to me,but i seldom listen to them.
raagas, Suresh has covered for me. I just mentioned those 2 names as virtually every song that I adored of them years back remain in that state. I cannot say the same of others -With Madan Mohan, the catch is that I didnt discover him at all until my early 30's. I do hold him in high esteem but still would rate SDB and Salilda higher.
As I said, it is just my preference - and I am not musical enough to articulate the reasons.
I once used to have a Mukesh cassette scraped to the last thread of tape. Cant bear to hear those songs now :-)
