There are many more fans of MGR all across Tamil Nadu.
By the way more or less every actors and politicians used MGR's name for their popularity including Rajini.
And Rajini follows the MGR formula only. That is why he is popular.

There is no point talking about after 20 years. Once Rajini stops acting within 5 years he will be forgotten.
