Sakunthala's outstanding performance on stage. And due to business reasons, there were some cinematic contrivations (e.g. Nagesh part, chasing of pathan, my lady song, etc.). It is no doubt that these portions were odd scenes in the otherwise greatest classic. In the stage, it was gripping till the end. There were appluauses from the start till the end. The play would commence sharp at 6.30 p.m. We were in Triplicane and the Parthasarathi Swami Sabha were these plays used to be held was in our street. At about 4.00 p.m. the lorry with the set properties would cross our street. At about 5.30 p.m. people would start to throng the Sabha. We would not know when NT came but he would commence the play exactly at 6.30 p.m. From 6.00 p.m. onwards cars (there were not much of 2 wheelers then) would throng the Sabha. By about 6.25 p.m. 90% of the people would be on the seats. And when the play ends we would again notice the procession of people and cars coming from the hall and it would be a delight to watch. In fact, we would be clearly hearing the audience applause, which will be heard every now and then. And inside the hall, when I watched the play for once, It was jam packed G. Sakunthala would dominate the proceedings with her accent. In some scenes, NT would watch her performance standing still. It would be very lively. And coming to the narration, all the actors of Sivaji Nadaka Mandram would have been well trained and would be perfect. It was a team work. The lighting would be apt. The change over scenes were perfect. The only drawback was the absence of huge sets like in Manohar's drama, which is not necessary for social plays. Overall, it was a dream come true for us to watch the plays of NT. Even when I was a school boy, I had the chance of watching Needhiyin Nizhal. But I do not remember much of it because I was very tender at that age. There were some scenes that were added to the screen version, but the comedy part of Nagesh was not upto the mark in the screen, whereas in the stage it was very realistic. Though Padmini did her best in the film, some thing was missing in the heroine's role compared to the play.
Raghavendran.
It is from the film Anjal Petti 520. directed by T.N. Balu, music by R. Govardhan (younger brother of R. Sudarsanam). sung by T.M.S. & L.R. Easwari.Quote:

Dear Raghavendra Sir,
Thanks for the reply.
Also, your re-cap on VV play was very nostalgic and made me long for those good old days. Definitely it was a golden period.
A couple of days back I was just passing by Crown Talkies and was immediately drowned in old memories. It gave me a lump on my throat.
Now, only the front portion of the building with the emblem " Crown Talkies " stands lonely. The rest of the building has been completely demolished to the ground. A very pathetic sight.
Thank You Mr.Raghavendran :-)

Before it was come in the combination of Shanthi, Crown, Bhvaneshwari (from ThiruviLaiyaadal), previously it was under the combination of Chitra, Crown, Sayani and more NT films were screened there (I think from 'Kaathavaraayan'). So it is senior screen for NT movies comparing to Shanthi and Bhuvaneswari. Same like that Trichy Prabhat also the 'Fort of NT'.
But now, only Shanthi theatre is there. Crown, Bhuvaneswari and Trichy Prabhat were demolished.
What about Madurai New Cinema (another NT's Fort)..? Is it still alive..?. Murali sir should confirm.
Dear Karthik,
Sorry. New Cinema is not there. There is a legal case among the partners and the theatre has been closed for more than 7, 8 years, I remember. Once the problem is solved, it will be sold. But I don't know whether any multiplex would come up. The chances are it may be converted in to a jewellery complex, because the entire surrounding is occupied by Jewellery shops for the past 60 - 70 years and the area is known as Nagai Kadai Bazaar.
It pains you when these theatres where you enjoyed so much in your life are no more. Not only New Cinema, Sri Devi (which has a unique record of screening only NT movies for a continous period of 15 months- Oct 29,1970 to Jan 14,1972 -starting with Engirundho Vandhaal, Thangaikkaaga, Kulama Gunamaa, Savaale Samaali and Babu) has already become a residential complex. Chinthamani which screened some greatest hits of NT like Thillaana and Tirisoolam has closed down. Thangam the biggest of Asia (here NT is the only actor whose 3 films have run for more than 100 days - Parasakthi, Padikaadha Medhai & Karnan) has been closed for more than 15 years. Out of the old theatres only Central is now functioning and of course Meenakshi is also there.

Saradha madam,
Excellent writeup on Vietnam veedu ..Vietnaam veedu nadikkum pothu NT-kku enna vayathu?
Murali sir ,Raghavendra Aiyya ..informative posts. :D
Joe,
He had completed 41 and was running 42. Film was released on 11th April of 1970.
For such type of roles, it is said that NT would always observe some person known to him. For Prestige Padmanabhan, it was said that he observed the mannerisms of India Cements Narayanaswamy and presented it in his own style. During the first day's play, after the make up it seems that NT was not fully satisfied with his appearence. He was telling VV Sundaram that something is amiss. After some time NT called up his make up man and asked him to prepare small and thin pieces of white hair and asked him to fix it on his ears. When it was done it looked as if there was hair growth in and around the ear and Prestige Padmanabhan was there in flesh and blood.
Another great admirer of this film was Gemini S.S.Vasan. In the play and cinema, it would be shown that Padmanabhan's mother underwent an ordeal to bring up her son. When Vasan saw the play he was moved to tears because Vasan's mother after her husband's death had to literally toil in the kitchen (she ran a eatery it seems) to bring up her son. Vasan after the play went up to the stage and he couldn't controll his tears while he was talking with NT and Sundaram. Vasan on that day got the rights for publishing the screen play (Drama play) in Ananda Vikatan and the same was serialised in Vikatan for months. Vasan, if not NT indicating that this play is going to be filmed by themselves, was even willing to go for the movie under his banner, it seems.
The movie evoked tremendous response all over. In our Madurai, it was released in Sri Devi and the first 106 shows (32 days all shows full) were continous Housefull shows. This was a record for a Black and White movie untill it was re written by Pattikkaada Pattanamaa. But vested interests played it's part. A top notch distributor Sethu films who were regularly distributing Devar films movies had charted Sri Devi for "Maanavan" starring Jaishankar. This was supposed to release on July 10th of 1970. By this time VV would complete 90 days. Even on the 86th day (5th July of 1970 - Sunday), VV had housefull shows of Matinee and Evening which was a great performance considering that it would not normally happen. It also goes without saying that all Sundays were like that. The Madurai District Sivaji Fans association tried its level best (even posters and hand bills were printed highlighting this) and spoke with the Distributor/Exhibitor. But they refused. So VV, which would have very easily crossed 100 days fell short by 10 days in Madurai though it crossed the milestone in other cities.
