Param,
For one thing, this movie was considered commercially loss making those days. Definitely not a big hit. With all the (relatively) huge expenses of going abroad for shooting those days, that too with too many big stars, having such an average run should have been disastrous for the producer. It possibly had some run in Chennai but in most other centers, it didn't even cross 50 days I think, despite having Kamal-Rajini for a Sujatha story. (Remember, the Chennai business wasn't as big a % as current in 70's ; also not too many theaters, so a movie had to run many days to even break-even).
Music was a big hit, without question!
engEyum eppOdhum & namma ooru singAri are both my all-time favourites!
'lAlla lalla lA lA' by SPB-SJ is another one very dear to me.
Bharathi kaNNammA / yAdhum oorE are excellent melodies but I'm not a big fan no-thanks to teacharammA  They were patti-thotti hits in TN, however!
All said and done, I won't rate that as all-time-number-one of TFM.
Reason? It had ABBA's mAmA miA copied  (vAnilE song).
That way, with a copied song, to call it our best would be an insult to all the masters of TFM, IMSO!
I've watched the movie in college auditorium, few years after its release and liked only the Rajinikanth portions. Boring otherwise, even the song scenes / sequences were uninteresting.
 I agree the story was irrational, but with this sort of music and the lead actors/ Singapore locals, O thought the movie would have been hit.
The way those girls (Audience) moving their head for this song was hilarious; it looked as if they were possessed! :rotfl:
Me too, I also love that song when SPB starts to sing in English " You are like a fountain"
?? L.R.Easwari ?
Sorry I don’t get this, MSV copied song ?
Raghu, the lalala song app referring to is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ858H2ErUI
Teacheramma, I learned later, was Vani Jeyaram (ABC, nee vAsi...)
I am also baffled with the copy claim. SambanthamE illaiyE....
Oh wait, sorry didn't read your sentence property, you said, I "also like".
Other small songs also worth mentioning, like the fountain song, and the waiting song, plus the one when Rajini goes hunting for the mysterious caller.
Oh ! I like her voice. I really liked her "Aanantha thAndavamO" song in this movie, esp the the way she sings ArrarE harE rAma oh HarE krishna" :)
"Aha inimai niraintha ulgam irruku" was one hell of a foot tapping song by SPB + LRE
I am also confused, let app anna clarify :)
Btw, There was a discussion in Rajni thread that whether this film or Ilamai Unchal aadugiradhu should be re-release? I strongly feel NI should be re-released like Karnan . Neenga enna solrEl ?
hmm I prefer NI , mainly because of the songs!
Ah another song that come to my mind is " naa naana naana ... ninaithaalE inumu, an affair to remember" and the rest of humming by deadly (SPB+SJ) duo is simply mesmerising!
Kamal's 'tache style here, 90slEyE try pannunEn, but was poorly appreciated...even by my former Kamal-fan-turned-Rajini-fan-because-of-Baasha-dad. Back in 70s there were pix of him with that Zappa-esque moustache....throgi!!!
One of my personal favourite movies of that era..
Oru padathula 13 pattu pottu, 13 pattum hitaanathu anegama athu intha padam thaannu nenaikiren.....
I do like both the songs "you are like a fountain" and "What a waiting what a waiting, tell me birds..."
As i said in the past, jayapradhaku cancer irrukutha illaiyanu makkaluku kadaisi varaikum puriyala...
Many times discussed in tfmpage before. The song that goes like 'vAnilE' is suruttified from ABBA's famous mAmA miA song (another line that goes like 'sayanOrA' with the same borrowed notes)
(Interestingly, the same ABBA song was suttufied by RDB in a bigger way, for one of his biggest hits - 'mil gayA...terE liyE' song of hum kisisE kum naheen).
"vaanilE mEdai..." is a "copy" of "mamma mia..."? Really?
vaanilE mEdai:

marana mokkai padam - even songs were so-so except Rajini solo song.
Acting except for rajini - kodumai .
The duration of all the songs in the movie approximately add up to 1 hr. for this one hour, i could easily tolerate rest of the movie.
those shaky images of jayapradha are intolerable...
Favourite songs in NI:
1) Engeyum Eppodhum
2) Namma Ooru Singari
3) Sambo Siva Sambo
Other than these songs, I like comedy and the (konjoondu)chemistry between Kamal & Rajini.
I hate it mainly for the gross injustice done to Kamal's character by his Guru. For that matter(except Avargal, to an extent) KH never got to play a really strong character in any of those KH-RK-KB combo movies. NI, Moondru Mudichu, Apoorva Ragangal - Ellaathulayum the same lover-boy with nothing else to do. If you remove RK from this, you have memorable characters like in Nizhal Nijamagiradhu, Punnagai Mannan, Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu. BR should have brought these two together again.
H_H, I kinda disagree. Sure, Rajini shines but his role here is no different than Nagesh's in an NT/MT movie, supporting comedic role. Kamal's roles in all the K.B movies had ranges, he was adorable in 3 knots, if not why would I cry and hate that goddam fag flipper didn't save Kamal when he was drowning (I was three or four years old), in AR he was hot headed youth in love with older woman and plays miruthanggam they way it should be played, well-written role that he perfected in the Hindi version, and you should check out his hilarious cameo in Tappu Thalanggal (where I learned recently that he was testing out the teeth for Kalyanaraman).
In NI, the fault likes entirely on Jayapradha's characterisation. It could have been just an on-off love affair, instead of all that stupid backstory.
I guess the reason for KB portraying KH as a lover boy was due to fact he was (in 70's) had that image in most of his movies till the arrival of Karthik. Such image wouldn't have suited RK , simply because of his looks. Vice versa RK's sadistic villianism / comedy could never be justified by KH. So it sorts of balances out!
Grouch, in Moondru Mudichu, what Kamal did was an extended cameo. It was a Rajini-Sridevi show all the way. KB was probably fascinated by his new finding that he made a movie just to showcase Rajini's mannerisms and villainy. Though Kamal was not a star, KB could have gone for a lesser actor to play that role. I still remember asking my brother innocently "Andha scene'kkapparam Kamal varave maattaara?"
AR was slightly better. But again in a movie based on family & complex relationships, he had to share screenspace with the supporting characters. Baring few angry outbursts, onnum perusa illa. Avargal on the other hand was a movie which largely benefited by Kamal's acting. But here too KB did not want to give anything ordinary to Rajini. Did he?
NI - mannikkave mudiyaadha kutram. A director who went out the way to write such an entertaining comedy track could have done something better to make KH & Jayapradha's characters interesting. Nagesh in MT/NT movies? Maybe, but do you think Kamal's character in NI was half as good as MT's or NT's? A Gemini Ganesan-Nagesh or Karthik-Goundernu sollalaam. Balancing ange dhaan konjam odhaikkudhu.
Thappu Thalangal naan innum paakkala. But unfortunately, I didn't find even the last-scene cameo in Thillu Mullu interesting, when compared to the rest of the movie. If you compare these movies with Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu, which was released almost during the same time, you would see the difference.
Kamal's charecter in NN was originally done by Rajini in Chilakamma Cheppindi in telugu directed by Eranki Sharma who was assistant director to KB. Even i heard that Chilakamma Cheppindi was a remake from malayalam.
Kamal's performance in TT was very good though it was a small one. KB was mainly making female centric movies where bad men were mostly a sadist, womainser or chauvanist etc. Rajinikanth's unique style of acting perfectly suited those charecters which was considered to be fresh at the time. However, KB also offered variety of roles to kamal in several movies, to name a few, ventriloquist in Avargal, mimicry artist in aval oru thodarkathai, unemployed youth in VNS etc.
OK, a simplified version of mAmA miA, by indhi MD RDB in 1977 :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2uc7vqZJrQ
vAnilE / sayanOrA is ditto of mil gayA. Keyboarders may be able to map the notes, I can only go by ear :-)
(It was clever for RDB to lift his first line from somewhere in the middle of the ABBA song - the "Look at me now / I don't know now" part - and MSV followed suit  Still, RDB pal iLichchifies with 'terE liyE' that's ditto of mamA miA while MSV couldn't resist keeping a feeble keyboard accompaniment that retains the feel of the ABBA song. What's more, the guitar prelude plays the same tune and thus the copied notes form almost 25% of this tiny song; With sayanOra, it has two versions too!).
Obviously, one should not look for "Veda / S-G / Deva"-like wholesale lifts in the case of MSV-IR-ARR. Karthik's itwofs website samples should showcase this difference in levels, though there's an element of plagiarism!
For e.g., look at these by IR and how they are classified:
http://itwofs.com/tamil-ir.html
If all you guys disagree with me (that MSV's 'sayanOrA' & RDB's 'mil gayA' are the same melody), I'll book an appointment with an ENT specialist :-)
 okay, app, just the first liner, then it takes off in different direction. Abba feel-a? maybe...maybe...
