Song: ethanai manidhargaL ulagathile
Film: needhikku thalai vanangu
Singer : PJayachandran
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: MSViswanathan
I think this is one of the 2 JC songs for a MGR film.(Other being 'amudha thamizhil' from madhuraiyai meeta sundhara pandian). Jayachandran IMO is the most underused singer in TFM. Many of KJY songs could have gone to him(not that KJY versions are bad).
NTV had MGR, Latha ,Rojaramani, SVaralakshmi etc and its remake of a hindi film(Titleeludes me). Story is about a rich, mom-pampered biker who blinds someone in an accident. MGR's parents persuade someone else to take the blame. Feeling guilty for his actions MGR comes in search of the blind person. What he does and how he does fills the remaining part of the film.
'indha pachai kiLikoru', 'kanavugaLe aayiram' are the other hit songs from NTV.
Vaa Kalaaba Mayile is from Kathavarayan- a film where MGR consented to act, and later gave up, with Sivagi Ganesan taking the role.
Other songs in Vangangamudi are:
1. Malaiye Un Nilai Neeyum Paareer- Seergazhi Govindarajan. One of the rare songs by SG for Sivaji
2. Eh Gumthala Gumma - Jikki picturised on Helen
3. Aatchiyin Thimiraale- Seergazhi Govindarajan
4. Eerainthu Mathame- TMS
G Ramanathan brings out the talents of TMS. In once song he makes him sing with very high pitch- Omkarmaai Vilangum Natham. In another song TMS is made to sing in a very low pitch- Mohana Punnagai Seithidum Nilave.
When I met PB Seenivas at the Woodland Drive Inn, Chennai, he told me that his favourite song sung by P Suseela is Ennai Pol Pennallavo. According to PBS, in this song G Ramanathan brought out the entire talent out of her. G Ramanathan always gets the best from singers assigned to sing under him. There are many of such stories under G Ramanathan's composition.
When I met AM Raja in his house in Chinniah Pillai Street in 1984, he mentioned a few songs that he sang under GRamanathan, and did not fail to remind me of "Vaazhvinile Vaazvinile Innaal Ini Varumaa." GR used AMR in the right pitch that he could sing.
I remember seeing this movie in PILOT talkies in Raypet area when I went to India for the first time in 1977. The film did not do well at the box office, but shall always be remembered for the songs and great music. As there was no bus service after the last show I had to walk back to Sarangapani Stree, T Nagar. I was prepared to do that. The film was worth walking more than 4 miles. No regrets.

Song: thoLil vizhum maalaiye
Film: uLLathil nalla uLLam
Singers : Sjanaki, SPB
Lyrics: Gangai Amaran
Music: Gangai Amaran
Poor GA, he gave his best for worst movies. It wouldn't be exaggerating to call him the karthik raja of 80s. Mighty talented but never reached the top tier. Listen to todays pick. It has everything going for it- beautiful melody, great singing, good interludes. But the song never became popular.
UNU had vijayakanth and Radha in the lead. I think it was directed by Manivannan. The film sank without a trace and so did the song.
Ramki, was just thinking about this one couple of days back. Good pick. GA had some real gems. His "suttum vizhi sudar dhaan" by PS is one of the best PS songs of the 80s.

Song: kaadhal thegangaL poNoonjal
Film: anbuLLa malare
Singers : PSuseela, SPB
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Music: iLaiyaraja
'kaadhal thegangaL' is a breezy, slow, pleasant and beautiful duet. The interludes are vintage IR . In fact the whole album is a musical treat.
'alai meedhu thaLLaduthe siru odam'(SPB, VJ) and
'thaiye thaiye kaNmun neeye' (SPB)
are other gems from AM.
Public did not show much anbu to Mahendran directed 'anbuLLa malare' . Even the reviews were scant. AM had Shanthi krishna, Sarathu Babu, Srividya and Sridhar rajan?. The story is about a girl who elopes with her lover and later marries him. He turns out to be a drug addicted psycho. He tortures her and their kid.
She meets sarathbabu who is married to srividya. What happens then? I do not remember reading in the review..(Knowledgable people can help).
nice duet by PS & SPB

Song: kannil vandhai nenjil nindrai
Film: Lottery Ticket
Singers : Jayachandran, Vani Jairam
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: LVaidhyanathan
Slow and sweet duet by VJ and JC .
Ramki,
Thanks for highlighting this song. Not only it is a rare song, it is also a beautifully crafted song. Both singers get equal share of the lyrics, and they also alternate very often, without one having to wait for the other to complete the whole pallavi or whole/half a charanam. That much more work for the lyricist, to make the line-bits fit the gender. Also, the absolutely soothing instrumentation is not to be overlooked.
