Dear friends,
It gives me much pleasure at a time heavy heart to read Saradha mm's postings. She has from such a tender age has been a fan of NT and has been contributing very much in our hub. We shall give her standing ovation. In fact at various stages of my life, in various situations, I had the privilege of contributing our part to NT. It was the election 1977. It was the first time NT & MGR share a same dias in the political arena. This had created unforeseen hype among the people - particularly the fans. One of such diases was in Triplicane Venkatarangam Pillai Street, where a meeting was arranged to canvas for R. Venkataraman, candidate from South Madras constituency for the Lok Sabha representing Congress (I). As usual NT had come to stage on time. There was discussion between two MGR fans by my side. (I was behind the stage along with the party functionaries). One of the two was asking the other, Ennappa ivaru, ivvalavu seekkiram vandhuttaare, namma thalaivaraayirundha rendu maniyo alladhu moonu maniyo agume, ivaru poyitta ivanga aalunga ellam poyiduvangale. For this, the other person says, Adhukkennappa, avanga aalunga koduthu vechavanga, avaraiyum paatthuduvaanga, veettukkum kaalaa kaalathile poi saappaadu saappittu thoongiduvaanga. Namma pozheppe sollu, vaadhyaaru ethanai manikku varuvaaro, eppo veettukku povomo, veetle poi vaangi kattikkanum, thittu vaangikkitte saappidanum. Ororu samayathile enakke salippu varudhuppa. For this the other man got angry and argues with him. Thalaivarukkaaga avanavan uyiraiye kodukka thaayaraairukkaan, nee enna ippadi paesariye. Before he concludes, another party functionary calls them and gives some assignment.
This is only a sample to show how understanding a leader NT was.
Raghavendran.
Just watched an act in a Star show in Singapore to mark the 75th anniversary of Tamil Cinema:
Prabhu and Radhika attempting to do the therukkooththu of Navaratri.
Horrendous
I was not expecting them to match up to the performances of arguably the best acting talents we have had. That would be an unreasonable expectation. But it was clear they had not absorbed even the very basics of what made that performance the best. A classic in Tamil Film History.
Among the 9 roles in the movie, this role alone had Sivaji play two temperaments. One off stage and one on-stage. While off-stage (the character's "real" nature) he was a duty-bound, diffident and even slightly effiminate person, on stage his performance was different.
An actor playing an actor is always in a subtle position. His "acting" should reflect the capacity of the "actor" whose role he is playing.
This is what makes me a little hesitant about Sivaji's Shakespeare-on-stage period. In all those cases, he was not supposed to be an actor in the film but the roles (be it Othello or Ceaser) were done to Sivaji's fullest efforts and talent. But that would be the least of my misgivings about possible logical fallacies and melodrama of the times. Rajapart Rangadurai is different because Rangadurai himself is supposed to a fine actor. So the stage-perfect rendition of Tirupur Kumaran to Nandanar to the clown are quite understandable.
What sets Navaratri apart is the fact that the Therukkoothu actor (the character's name escapes me) is not a talent comparable to the actor Sivaji. In fact the whole thing is a mild parody of the exaggerated melodrama and style of the Therukkoothu form. The actor has memorized the lines, one doubts if he has absorbed the meaning as much as he has absorbed the rhyme. He does not seek (and indeed is not capable of) emotionally engaging his audience, he only seeks to provide superficial entertainment.
Sivaji's performance is one that comes after a thorough understanding of this. His acting is exaggerated and his delivery is proud - while we are rolling in laughter as we realize that the actor has no clue about the lines he is delivering. His voice is so so different - even TMS's singing style would be different from the way he usually sings for Sivaji.
Savitri is brilliant. In addition to Sivaji's situation Savitri also has to bear in mind that she is NOT an actress. Her expressions - or lack threof- and dialogue delivery will be ridiculous and thus funny. Her meaningless splitting and extension of words to accomodate the rhyme is just hilarious.
It was quite fitting that this piece was chosen to be played in an occasion that marked the 75th anniversary of Tamil cinema. Truly it is an all time classic 10 minutes. But the way the Prabhu-Radhika duo played it - trying to expressive and impressive when the whole idea is to be exact opposite - was disappointing.Disappointing because they had so completely missed what the whole piece was about. So much for how much our legends have been truly appreciated for their achievements. Sometimes I feel praise has become an instinctive thing in our culture that it even happens at the expense of true appreciation. Nothing could be more disappointing to an artist. :-(
Dear Prabhu,
Another good piece from you. As you had rightly pointed out, that 10 minute dance drama would be interesting. NT character's name is Singaram (to denote Singara Rasam) and the Sathiyavan Savithiri skit would showcase the ability of the stage actor to portray the sequence when he is caught in a piquant siuation (his regular actress would have fallen sick) and nade to compromise on what is available to him.(Sorry, I am not able to wax eloquently like you).
Haven't seen the Singapore stage show. May be they tried to project the exact scene and in the process missed the subtle humour of the situation.
Regards
PS: Prabhu, I am reminded of a recent conversation I had with a person (connected with cine field) and he was telling me that if we include the Sathiyavan enacting, Navarathiri becomes Dasavatharam (No offence meant Kamal Fans).
Thanks for the info Mr.Murali.
When you mention that Singaram was named so for Singara Rasam I am curious to know if any other names in that film were also kAraNap peyargaL.
What irked me about the performance was that they thought it was a tribute to Sivaji-Savitri and it was anything but that.
Yeah, Prabhu. All the characters were named based on the navarasas. The list is
1. Arbutham - Arbutharaj
2. Bayam -
3. Karunai - Karunakaran (Dr)
4. Kobam -
5. Santham - Santhappa
6. Singaram - Singaram
7. Aruveruppu -
8. Veeram - Veerappan
9. Anandam - Anandan
Regards
PS: Right now these are the names i remember. Would update shortly.
I watched for the first time Navaraathri and Kai kodutha Deivam over the weekend. It was great. Even though it was out and out NT film I have this feeling that Savithri was better than Nt in both films esp in KKD.
I remeber a scene in Navarathiri where NT falls at the feet of Savithri. I donīt know if any other top hero has ever done such an act
