Song: malligaiye malligaiye
Film: maapiLLai Sir
Singer : SPB
lyrics: ?
Music: Shankar Ganesh
While Yesterdays dad sang about the joys of expecting a new baby, todays dad sings on the verge of his dreams getting shattered. His wife doesnt want to continue her pregnancy and wishes to abort the baby. The lyricist(cant recall his name definitely not vaali or VM) aptly writes
kattilile aLLithandhaaL
thottil vandhadhum thaLLi nindraaL
garpamenum vaasalaiye aeno thaiyavaL pootivaithaal
thandhai nenjin karpanaigaL
ellaam pagalin soppanangaL
endhan thevai un varavu
naaLai theriyum un mudivu
'MappiLLai sir' touted as the comeback film for yesteryear actress Jayanthi(does anyone even care?), had Visu, Sumithra, Mohan, Rekha etc. I watched the film on the day of its release(not a good decision but there is nothing else to do in CBE for a college student ).
The film also had another nice SPB solo
'maadi veetu sellakiLi'.
Other songs i remember
'daddy daddy sorry daddy' and
'pattu poovai thottu paarka'(SPB,chitra)
Very Melodious Song! Thanks
Indha padam vandha nyabagame illai. Eppadi thaan ungalukku ippadi oru nyabag shakthiyo! Great!!

one more thing about that movie. Mohan had his own voice, which was one of the reasons for dismissal at Box office :)
I have seen this movie in Krishnaveni theatre Madras.I do not remember much of the story.I remember that Jayanthi is a rich lady and Visu thiruthufies her.My niece used to sing the 'daddy daddy sorry daddy' song and thats the reason I remmeber that song. I dont remember the other songs.
Yes jmahesh, Jayanthi acts as Visu's wife. Rekha and one more person act as their daughters. Mohan was Rekha's lover I guess. I did'nt know this movie had songs :o
That one more person's name is pournami, I think!
bala :)
JMahesh, Yes Jayanthi plays the role of an annoying/controlling wife. Her daughter Rekha marries an automechanic(Mohan). The usual problem starts and the film has a typical visu film ending(Though it was directed by TPGajendran i think). Sumithra-Kishmu storyline is a seperate unnecessary track

Song: poNmaankuyil
Film: manasukkuL mathaapu
Singer : SPB
lyrics: S.A.Rajkumar
Music: S.A.Rajkumar
Naaz requested this song. He writes:
Manasukkul Maththaappoo was One Flew Over The
Kodaikanal Cuckoo's Nest. It first hibernated as
Thaalavattam (1986) in malayalam, and is currently
nestled as Kyon Ki in hindi.
In the tamizh version, Prabhu plays a psycho /
murderer brimming with such killer innocence and
mischief even the resident psychiatrist (Saranya)
wants to shore up all the cuteness to herself.
Pro-zapped like she's never been. You know it can't
end well.
-----------
Now that that's out of the way, let's just find
respite in this enchanting SPB solo. It's a song that
fills the heart with gentle spools of iridescence. I
apologise for the below-par recording, but things do
get tolerable after the first minute, and the light
takes a long time to fade.
SA Rajkumar displays some fine arrangements in the
interludes, and the song flits and ascends like a soap
bubble on a sunny meadow.
SPB makes it lush.
excellent
One of the few SA.Rajkumar I liked in his discography. I love the tempo rise from the humming 'Ooo...Ponmankuyil Singaramai Vandhadudhe..', had a pretty nice prelude as well. 'Poonthendrale' was the other good song from the same album.
PS: Never knew Pick of the week featured 80s that I've heard of :). Should check back regularly then ;).
Ramki, one of the best songs of SPB is O Oh....ponmaankuyil. Classic rendition. Gundu Prabhu gudichu gudichu aaduvaar. Nalla rasikkalaam :-)
Its original ThalavOttam was by Mohanlal, Krithika (acted as Kamal's daughter in Nayagan) and Nedumudi Venu (as Senior doctor). Pathetic end of the story with mercy killing as the theme (??). Was it the same in Tamil version? Who acted in place of Venu? Sarathbabu???
Thanks for the nice song.
SN23, dont think mercy killing was the theme for the Tamil version. I remember lastly Charanya become a lunatic after Prabhu's death wearing the same docket number.
:rotfl: :rotfl:Quote:

akka,
wasnt that Pulan Visaranai ? and it was based on that kidney racket around the same time.. I dont remember anything like that in this movie. What i remember is Prabhu is/acts like a lunatic after his lover's death. Charanya takes pity on him, falls for him. Senthamarai, the chief doctor i guess, tries to pull Charanya away from Prabhu. Finally Prabhu dies in some way. Charanya becomes a mad person seeing that.
Really nice collections.
Thanks Ramki.
I love oo.... ponmaangkuyil....
but i haven't watch the movie yet. feel want watch now. thanks friends for the review of the film.

SAR peruimai pada vendiya padal. Just a handful in his painful long tenure(!)
SPB as usual sings very well.
Thanks, Ramki how did this get selected? It was a vey popular song those days

Dear Narayanan, Usha
In Thalavattom, MLal suffering from mental imbalance (he happened to see his lover Lizzy getting electrocuted during a stage programmme) gets admitted in a hospital where Soman is the Chief and Karthika his daughter cum Doctor, attends to him.NVenu is another Dr. who is a family friend of MLal. Karthika slowly cures lal and in the process falls for him. Soman not accepting this relationship does an operation that immobilises Lal for the rest of his life. Venu unable to bear this does the mercy killing. Karthika now loses her mental imbalance and becomes a patient there. In Tamil also, the same treatment was there. It was Prabhu, Saranya as Dr, Lizzy as lover and Senthamarai was the chief. I don't remember the actor who did Venu's role. Otherwise everything was same.
Regards
Murali: Sarath Babu did Venu's role!
Ramki -
Thanks for featuring the song and the commentary! It is reassuring to know that my picks (few and far between) resonate so vividly with the participants in this thread. Adhu Podhum Enakku! :)
What happened to the SAR of this calibre? Swallowed up by "assembly-line" TFM mediocrity? That's the sad thing. But this solo is his crowning glory, and a reminder of the fine potential that was commercially squandered.
SPB...Eththanai Sringaaramaai Paadugiraar! Delicious!
Thanks again, Ramki.
Coming to the song from "Maappillai Sir," I remember seeing this song on TV way back in 1999, when I was living at home with my family. I remember the song for Visu(?) stroking the hair of a doll on his lap. I figured this song was about a father's reminiscing over a lost daughter, as with the cuts of a cute little girl. I think that the cuts with Visu and the doll are especially effective in conveying pathos; just think about it, a grown man petting an inanimate object incapable of giving any affection in return.
I second Naaz on his bit on SAR's talent being squandered by commercialism. I would even go insofar as to compare SA Rajkumar to Mallu composer Ouseppachan. Both started out in the mid 1980s, both started out giving songs very similar to IR's style, both gave us false hopes with their debut films, and both eventually caved in to commercialism and gave mostly superficially catchy songs.

If I may address your question:
"SAR Perumai Pada Vaendiya Paadal...just a handful...painful tenure (!)"
The answer to your "how was this selected" query is also within your post! :)
This solo is a "rare" example of SAR's excellence. Sure, it was popular around the time of the film's release. And given the forgettable output by the same MD in the later years, you must admit that Ponmaankuyil seems to be more and more of an (exceptional) abberration?
Popular songs can also showcase some "lost" creativity that deserves celebration in this thread!
:)
Bala :)
If you been noticing, i always try to have atlease one 'known' song, if not more, per week. It kind of balances the selection and also makes the thread active(Look at the response for the first 2 selections of this week:) )
Next selection, hopefully, will be a rare song to most of us.
Coming to the storyline of MM, charanya will shoot senthamarai after he murders prabhu with his wild electrical plugs :)

Song: painthamizhe vaa
Film: avaL oru thamizhachi
Singer : SPB
lyrics: ?
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
I might have said this many times before, but no harm in repeating :). Savithri and Saritha are 2 actress i admire for their
performances. They can handle any kind of role. Saritha must be the last heroine in TFM to have received performance oriented roles. Thanks to KB for exploiting her potential to the maximum extent. Not only she did good roles in tamil but also in telugu, malayalam and kannada too.
Like any good actor, she did overact sometimes but these instances were far and few.
After a fantastic debut in Marocharitra, KB and Saritha once again joined hands for another telugu venture 'kokilamma'.
She played a poor deaf girl who encourages her poor loverboy(Rajeev) to become a big singer. He does and he forgets her and marries a rich lady(Swapna). The storyline was kind of similar to aenipadigaL.
MSV came up with excellent songs and todays pick is one good one.
You can listent to the telugu version here:
http://www.telugubiz.net/songs/searc...al=571&sort=al
(The link says iLaiyaraja which is incorrect)
CB, S-G, SAR - seeing the sequence, I assumed Sampath-Chelvan would be next. You broke it with MSV :-)
Personally I liked SAR's chinna poove song from chinna poove mella pesu than manasukkul mathapoo. In fact it was the same team , isnt it which made both films isnt it?
In manasukkul mathapoo Suhasini was supposed to do Saranya's role & even papers carried ads with her pictures.
I have seen 'aval oru thamizhachi' in maris fort in Trichy.I remember the climax after Rajeev ditches Saritha ,she continues to carry on with her life by sticking cinema posters with the help of another disabled woman.(?blind)
I also remember the review in kumudham or vikatan which said 'ippadi appatamaana thelungu padathukku poi 'aval oru thamizhachi' endru KB per vaithirikiraar.
( this comment was due to the Telugu writings/posters that are seen thru out the movie)
Ramki
Thanks for the AOT song, never heard this!
SPB tries to give life to otherwise often-repeated tune by the Maestro MSV.
Naaz, thanks for the comments..
how about a rare song of SPB by Chakravarthi/KVM/Sathyam/Ramesh Naidu? (the satlwarts of Telugu film songs of the 70s and early 80s, who in spite being very popular in Telugu could hardly make a dent in Tamil)
But one thing is true, your selections have been marvellous!
Bala
one small addendum:
I added KVM not to discredit his contribution to Tamil film in 50s/60s, but to just make a point that he was a super-star MD in 70s and early 80s, while in Tamil he was more a also-ran. However we cannot forget Enipadigal, Pallandhu Vazha, Kadhal Kiligal etc..

You approve, and I am reassured! :)
I recall that a PS/SPB duet for Satyam was featured in this thread a few months ago? "Thodangum Thodarum Puthu Uravu." (Mudisoodaa Mannan) A charming composition. Alas, my collection of songs has very few "dubbing" ditties - which is where we usually found Satyam, Chakravarthi, Ramesh Naidu...Talking of which, it would great to hear the serene PS solo from Pennukku Yaar Kaaval (MD: RN) "Kanne Kannaana Kannaa Ponnae..." which had an inspired interjection of "suvi aahaa suvi" I remember this solo fondly, although it is centuries since I heard it!
The film starred Jaya Chitra, and was a remake of the Telugu hit, Chillarakottu Chittamma. Ramki, can you send out those legendary (and resourceful) tentacles soon? :)
Naaz
Thanks for reminding that song. However if I recollect correctly that song is by SJ not PS. PS did have a solo in that movie but cannot recollect that.
Thanks fore reminding a rare jem

If possible, thanks

balaji !
"katrathe kiLikoodu" was remade in tamil as "oonjaladum uravugaL"
rajdes :)
JMahesh thanks for sharing your memories on AOT. KB , sometimes, had a unique taste in chosing titles.
Bala, Naaz:
I will keep an eye on these MD's songs. I feel guilty for not featuring many KVM songs in POW.
I have been looking for 'oonjaladum uravugaL' songs for a while and also 'uLLathil oru oonjal' from 'koteeswaran magaL'
Pick #309
http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow06/bharathikku_s.rm
Song: bharathikku oru kaNNama
Film: Shankari
Singers : Swarna, Rajkumar Bharathi
lyrics: vaali
Music: VKumar
Thanks to NeelD for sharing this sweet melody. RB's sound very pleasant in this song and it was my favorite when it used to play in the radio.
I think 'shankari' was released in early 80's and VKumar was then working in very few films. The film had this good song and couple of PS solos(I will host them later). Saritha and shankar(i think) were the lead actors in shankari. I remember reading the review of this film but do not remember the details.
What was the last film by VK? Meendum Mahaan?
Thanks Madhu
Ramki, nice melody (however VK has repeated his interludes from his other songs, with the beginning score sounding more like the Kaalam enakku thozhan, his one of the best numbers)
However mundane lyrics by Vaali
VK we all know respected PS. But one incident I read somewhere that VK made some harsh comments that PS could not sing the way he had expected her to do, and PS cried. This happened in 79/80 not sure for which song/film...
Thanks
Bala
Hi friends,
Warm Greetings....!
AOT story like "Pattam Poochi" and just a small different is the heroine was not blind. Kamal and Jeyachitra have done good job.
Ramki, I love "ethanai Malargal Thaavum pattam poochi" from the movie Pattam Pochi. Really touched duet by TMS and SJ. Who is the MD? Chakravarthi?!
Ramki Sir, Vaaippu irunthaal thayavu seythu antha paadalai host seiyavum.
