I never miss an opportunity to make music: AR Rahman
Oscars, Grammys, BAFTA, Golden Globe, National Awards... AR Rahman’s achievements read like a laundry list of global honours. With seven nominations at the upcoming GiMA (Global Indian Music Awards), he talks about achievements, new projects and the process of composing
music.
After all the honours you’ve won internationally, what do awards mean to you now?
It feels good to be nominated and awarded. Also, there’s a fanatic following that wants you to succeed. It’s a blessing. Also, winning an award is a high for the team of engineers and musicians who've worked with you.
What was it like to work on Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan?
Yash Chopra has an amazing passion for love stories and Adi wants the movie to cater to a younger audience. The music has been composed keeping that in mind.
Did you work with new singers for the soundtrack?
Neeti Mohan will be making her Bollywood debut. Then, there’s Shakti, Javed Ali and Harshdeep Kaur. Rabbi is also there.
What is the process of exchanging ideas and briefs with filmmakers like?
Each team has its own way of working. First, I talk to them about what they are looking for. I ask them which songs of mine they have liked in the past and what kind of songs could work for their film.
Since music directors have to compose keeping the storyline in mind, do you ever feel restricted?
If I felt restricted, I’d make music and put it on YouTube. Even if a song doesn’t get through in one film, it never goes waste. There are always opportunities to use it later.
What was it like to compose for Raanjhana?
After Lagaan (2001), this is the first time I got to work on folk-classical music. The film brings out a fascination for Banaras through the music.
Which international projects are you working on?
Work on Monkeys of Mumbai is going great. There are a few other projects, but I can’t speak about them yet.
You are also making a TV appearance in an episode of MTV Unplugged. What was it like to perform your songs with acoustic music?
I had wanted to do that for a long time. The experience has been great.
How do you juggle concerts, recordings, composing and shoots?
(Laughs) I never miss any opportunity to make music. It’s a form of catharsis.
How do you think your sound evolved has over all these years?
The standards were always high. I have to keep working hard and rediscovering myself to maintain the standard.

My Hindi film career complete after working with Yash Chopra: Rahman
Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has teamed up with Yash Chopra for the first time for the veteran filmmaker's much-talked about directorial venture " Jab Tak Hai Jaan".
The music maestro says with the project his Hindi film career is complete.
"Yashji saw one of my concerts in London. We had invited him and I think may be he felt that I should be in his film and was kind enough to call me. So it was a great honour for me because I had not worked with him. My whole Hindi film career is now complete," the 46-year-old said here Thursday at the announcement of Royal Stag Mega Music event.
"We had a very good experience so far. He seemed very happy and I hope the people feel the same," he added.
Talking about the kind of music done for the film, Rahman said: "It's a combination. They wanted to do my kind of songs at the same time they wanted the old charm and soul of music that Indian audience would love and which I wanted to do for a long time."
"We did in 'Taal' and 'Swades' and it's such a great thing to come together to do this," he added.
The music of "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" is yet to be released but the title poem penned by Gulzar is already creating waves.
The film hits theatres Nov 13.

tribute arr @GIMA.
ARR was awarded a special momento at the GIMA 2012 which was handed over by Yash Chopra for completing 20 years in Film Music.
Yashji was all praise for Rahman and said he was very fortunate and proud to have him compose for JTHJ....
Before this...a special musical tribute was performed by Singers & Musicians from Roja to Rockstar. It was a Medley of beautiful songs and was so refreshing to see all vintage singers performing.
Started of with Lagaan theme, followed by "Dil hai chhota sa" by Sadhna Sargam. She was joined by Hariharan for "Chanda re". Then Naveen took his magical flute to play the Bombay theme which was merged by "Tu hi re". Udit Narayan entered with "Mitwa" and Alka Yagnik complemented him.She then rendered the beautiful "Mehndi hai rachnewali" which got the loudest applause. Naresh Iyer's "Robaroo" got the house completely grooving and Mohit's "Saadda Haq" was the anthem of the evening. After all this heavy music...Sonu Nigam entered from the audience with just his voice singing a prelude to "Saathiya". This was the highlight as the entire somg was sung in Acapella style with no music but only Vocals & Chorus. Finally all singers joined in to sing "Jai ho" and calling Rahman on stage...This was the best gift and a pleasant surprise for ARR!
Do watch out the telecast whenever its gonna happen...

AR Rahman: Two decades and counting
The Mumbai rains refused to dampen the spirits of spirited attendees at the 6th Annual Global Indian Music Awards (GiMA) held at Yash Raj Studios on Monday night.
The ceremony, hosted by Saif Ali Khan and Parineeti Chopra, featured stellar performances by celebrated musicians and Bollywood stars.
There was a special act dedicated to the musical maestro A.R. Rahman for completing 20 years in the industry.
The Mozart of Madras was was felicitated by none other than veteran Yash Chopra. Renowned singers like Alka Yagnik, Hariharan, Udit Narayan, Naresh Iyer, Mohit Chauhan, Chitra, Sonu Niigaam came together to honour the music legend with a heartwarming performance to some of his popular chartbuster hits like Dil Hai Chota Sa, Tu Hi Re, Chanda Re Chande Re, Mitwa, Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali, Ru Ba Ru, Saathiya, Sadda Haq and Jai Ho.
On the special tribute given to him, A.R. Rahman says, “I had a hint about the tribute but I did not realize that it will create such huge nostalgia. I have learnt a lot from all these singers who have touched my heart today. I still remember the day of my first concert in 1996 when most of the singers who sang today came to watch me. I really thank GiMA for this. I am truly touched.”
Music maestro A.R. Rahman’s other half loves perfumes, we hear. And sources close to her reveal that her collection can rival some of the most ardent perfume collectors in the world.
It seems she’s so well acquainted with scents and fragrances that she can easily tell a person what he or she is wearing.
But the lady who is spiritual and has a strict no-alcohol policy, shops only for oil based perfumes which contain no alcohol.
The friend who was fortunate enough to receive the fragrances revealed that Saira is generous and loves having people experience the power of perfumes.
“She believes in the healing qualities of a good perfumed oil. The ones she buys are very soothing and long lasting too.”
