Raj, (indha 'Sir' ellam vendaam) I knew it- I knew it (like Raghuvaran in Puriyatha Puthir) that those 4 lines wouldnt have sufficed, and you will wanting the entire lyrics : )) . It is such a song, that you can never get enough of. Have been humming the song the whole day, trying to recall and get the words right- Hopefully it is correct.
Ok- Ippudu choodu:
Kadalil alaigal pongum
Aanaal karaiyai thaandumo
Verum tharaiyai theendumo
En udalil unarvu pongum
Undhan uruvai thaandumo
Veru uravai theendumo
Chinna chinna kaaranathaal-
kannamathil neer thuligal;
ennai mattum purindhukondaal
athanyum thaen thuligal!
Thaen thuliyai thaekki vaikkum
thamaraiyin idhayam amma-
thamaraiyai malara vaikkum
Aadhavanin udhayamamma!
Kanngal sonna kavithaiyellaam
kellezhuthu pondrathamma-
kallezhuthu endrirundhaal-
kaalam enna seiyyumamma?
Neer iduthu neer vilagi-
paarthathillai bhoomiyilae!
Nee pirindhu naan irundhaal-
vaazhkkaiyillai ponmagalae!
Chitra Productions Magarandham-1981 was directed by KS Gopalakrishnan. Chinna vayasila TV paarthen, so dont remember much of the film, but recall Radhika and Aruna acting in it. Another song from the film that had a fair share of air time was Neeyindri naano, naanindri neeyo SPB-PS duet (for which S-G sought inspiration from some Hindi song)
Kadalin alaigal pongum has the hero (who comes as a doctor?) pacifying his suspicious wife, Aruna. When she cries in a fit of jealousy, suspecting his loyalty to her, he breaks into this caressing song, to bring domestic peace. I have a vague memory that this song was among the last written by veteran A Maruthakasi, for whom both KSG and S-G still entertained a soft corner. How beautifully the lyrics flow in sync with the situation, and what awesome parallels!
Though the waves may surge, will they cross the shore and touch the mere floor (land)?
Similarly I do have feelings that swell, but will they ever go beyond you and seek another relationship? Oh, for such trifling reasons, your cheeks are bedewed with tears- if only you understand me, they will all become drops of honey------the lyrics are so tender, and filled with a veiled melancholy of a husband who is besieged by a wife whose suspicion knows no bounds
My favourite line is Neer ididhu neer vilagi paarthathillai bhoomiyilae, which reminds me of Pon mane kovam eno from Oru Kaithiyin Diary, in which Kamal is trying to pacify Revathi, wherein there is a line which is sung by the finally assuaged Revathi- Pookal modhinaal kaayam neruma all conveying the same thought
And how SPB has enjoyed himself in this slow, gentle number!
Thanks Raj, for opening this forgotten memory door--

I feel two raja's songs were very malayalee (temple ) type: 1. Solai Kuyile 2. Sandanam Ittu Sadiram Mottu Mozhi Pesum...... and every indication that IR acknowledges is by using Kerala instruments in these songs.

More latter

Raj- 'Neram pournami neram' is a stunning SPB-VJ duet from Meenava Nanban. I read that is set to Amritha varshini ragam- is that right?
Chinnanjiriya vannapparavai is indeed an immortal classic! How the singers scaled such heights so effortlessly is a matter of sheer magic!

Saravanan / Raj -
It is a sign of your largesse to overlook all my lyric, singer, film bloopers. As I said, for most of the old(er) songs vividh bharati and dd were my guides...
I simply love the Kattodu Kuzhal song...MGR showing up with kaalais, the women wading into the water with piththalai kudams...How these music waves keep rising!
Jayalakshmi is right! I knew that it was not PS...but not being sure, I just went ahead and put a ? after the entry. Motor Sundaram Pillai is also a cherished film, Sowcar, Sivaji and Manimala.

Naaz, I was able to listen to the song "engengo sellum" in PB. Good songs in "Indraiya Naazanjali". What a song, that "kaatrukenna vEli". Thanks to Mythila for directing the listener to Musicindiaonline.com.

Naaz,
"Maname muruganin" Tamil version was by Radha Jayalakshmi whereas Telugu was by PS. Both were excellent. What an usage of Veena in that!!
"Kallellam Manikka Kalaguma..." was shown on "Nejam marappadhillai" programme in Vijay TV last Sunday. The programme is being anchored by Visali Manoharan (D/o The great KaNNadaasan). The film version had more soothing humming by LRE (great mann). I always amazed watching the movements with fast but short steps and simple hand mudra's of Saroja Devi (non-stop for around 200 metres)!!! It was during one of the interludes. U know she was not a trained Bharatha natyam dancer :-). Yes of course, it was from "Aalaymani".
Madhamo Marghazi is from "Uththaravindri uLLey vaa", a full fledged comedy and entertainer with all hit songs.
Kannan Aruge Padavaendum is by VJ. I think the movie is "KaNNan oru Kai kuzhandhai". Other 2 songs by PS were Moha sangeetham (Solo) and Meghamey thoodhaagavaa (duet with SPB).
Aval Oru Pachchai Kuzhandhai is by SPB + PS from Nee oru maharaaNi. A must-song in all stage katcheri's by AV Ramanan, Raghuraj Chakravarthi etc.. It is with fantastic humming by PS in between.
