jokes really apart - Denali is Kamal's revenge on the guilty bublik who punished his heyram.
dashavatharam is kamal's attempted revenge on producer gone wrong - the movie became a ittu.

That's like saying anbE sivam and thenAli are both not great films. Thenali ought to be an outright reject.
For Rahman's standards, one has to say it's below average. It was not a lean patch per se in retrospect. thenAli was late 2000 but he also did Rhythm around the same time; Baba, pArththAlE etc. were in 2001 but he also did kannaththil the same year. But more importantly, he was doing some great stuff in Hindi these years, but I agree that it was odd to see Rahman churn out such indifferent stuff (especially stuff like Star, alli arjunA which seemed like he didn't even do them) for the first time.
But pOrkkaLam engE is of course a great song. I don't care much for the rest of the songs even if swAsamE is kinda pleasant.
All the savuthu remakes in Hindi.
amoorla appadi oNNum illai.
But you see the difference in 'feel' when watching the an SKV vs. a Dabang.
In 'Kamal - nam kaalaththu naayagan' there is an old interview by Equa's friend Gnani, who asks Kamal "aren't you - the intellectual Kamal Hassan - winking at the audience, when you are making SKV". And Kamal rejects it saying he is very sincere about those films and if he gave the impression to the audience that he was 'winking' then he would have failed as an actor.
In fact you can see that in the 'lesser' movies he makes. He is very earnest about it. There is little callous about them. Sure, there are odd moments - which are so ordinary that it is odd to see Kamal in the middle of that. But he himself exudes a sincerity and is kinda well-integrated.
Yeah, this is a recent phenomenon as such. I don't think there are good examples in Tamil cinema. This is of course an accurate charge on Dabangg. I didn't hate it, but didn't think it was anything more than passable. That said, there was something to the story of the two brothers (and the film also seemed sincere in these parts) in an old-school way (with some unusual elements like a twice-married mother), which I suspect didn't come through in the final film for whatever reasons. But I remember feeling that Abhinav Kashyap (who himself is a brother, of Anurag Kashyap one of the enfant terribles of Hindi cinema) was on to something here.Hey, I don't hate him or anything. Not even that familiar with his writings. I just find some of his Tamil films-reated writings that are meant to be serious high-minded stuff, pretty superficial. He's also self-righteous when he talks about filmmakers which makes me wonder if he accesses art in a way I can even understand!
