It is entirely up to you to make what you can out of these lyrics! But an addictive arrangement of notes on the Natabairavi scale and the teasing accompaniment of nagaswaram and guitars make you want to listen to it shamelessly once again.

The Quarter Song...

Tight and tingling, this song does get a tad monotonous towards the end.

Verdict:

There’s no way this album can ever be taken seriously. Prakash Kumar’s experimental side comes to the fore in the musical expression. Quite frivolous and wacky, some will just adore it outright, while some will take time getting used to it. But three cheers to GVP, Gayathri & Pushkar for trying something different.

UTHAMA PUTHIRAN MUSIC REVIEW

Uthama Puthiran is Dhanush's next movie which is directed by Mithran Jawahar. This will be the pair's third movie together after Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Kutty. This will also be a hat-trick of remake movies for the two. Uthama Puthiram is a remake of Telugu hit Ready and is produced by Mohan Appa Rao. Genelia will star in the movie with Dhanush. The music of the movie has been composed by Vijay Antony while Priyan, Eknath and Annamalai have penned the lyrics.

Ussumu Laresay...

Typical to a Vijay Anthony song, Ussumu Laresay starts with a rap flavor and moves on to heavy guitar and 'kuthu' arrangements. The Vijay Anthony touch is very visible especially with sounds like 'nachakku nachakku' and more rap in the middle. Lyrics are not a great plus to the song

Kan Irandil...

From a peppy dance number, Naresh tells you how he fell down Kan Irandil Mothi. When you just imagine, it will be a melody, he gets to the next gear with the usual drum arrangements. The song does remind us of songs of the past but Naresh does a good job in carrying it right through. Worth a listen!

Idicha Pacharisi...

Vijay Antony gets into his groove again with Idicha Pacharisi. A song of celebration, this one has a folk flavor to it. With the women and men chorus interludes adding more pep, the nagaswaram sounds make it even more authentic. Ranjith, Sangeetha and Vinaya have done a good job. Fast paced song, but fails to engage!

En Nenju...
Vocals: Vijay Prakash, Saindhavi
Lyrics: Priyan

We are treated to lovely sounds of the violin in En Nenju. A different experiment this time makes this more than just a melody. Ordinary lyrics like "Idhyangal idam maruthu" and "Vali kooda sugamaguthu" does let us down a little. But the song weighs on the positive side for the musical experiment. Has the potential to hit the charts!

Thooral Podum...
Vocals: Ajesh, Janaki Iyer
Lyrics: Eknath

Ajeesh and Janani do a nice job in Thooral Podum singing with the mood of the song. Guitar strums indicate a good opening for the song and is carried forward in a soothing manner. Though heavy at times for a melody, the music is just about perfect. Will fall into the play-it-again category!

Ulagam Unakku...
Vocals: Vijay Prakash
Lyrics: Annamalai

A typical I’m-the-hero-of-the-movie song, Ulagam Unakku sounds monotonous right from the start. "Ulagam unakku kavalai ethukku... irukkum varaiyal adithu norukku" screams Vijay Prakash. The song neither has the vigor nor the zap to make you want to listen again. This also makes the song a little preachy at times. Nothing special about this!

Verdict:

Overall, Uthama Puthiran is a typical Vijay Antony album with raps, kuthus and melodies. It is disappointing that the usual zing attached to a Vijay Antony album is missing this time. Though a couple of songs and sound experiments sound promising, it is not enough to make this album connect with the audience!

Built on a simple Karaharapriya scale (reminds you a tad of ‘June Ponaal’) this dreamy duet is differently structured in terms of percussive arrangements. Very soft charanams with only keyboard and violins make for easy listening.

Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar

A rather severe arrangement of Shanmukapriya raga notes, it does impart the right kind of mood to this song which hovers between sorrow and hope. Brooding notes from the flute and strings add small sparkles here. Could make it to the charts if filmed well.

Nadanthal...

Though there is nothing that makes this song stand out from many such others doing the rounds, the cheery rap bit adds a bit of ‘dum’ to it.

Nammai Thaandi...

Oh well, Oh well, Anandabairavi raga in a ‘jeans clad’ avatar here! Quite a natty number where the deft use of ‘ga’ and ‘ma’ swaras give it a sharp western touch. With alternating low and high notes that describe the tumbling emotions, this song flits around like a butterfly. Interesting percussive arrangement too. Sure to hit the charts

The breezy prelude is a sure indication of what is to follow- a desi titillation number in a folksy style. Can be relished for its amusing use of the Chalanata raga here.

Piranthom...
Theme song

Instrumental: Aah, here we are able to savour the raga better with the violins and flute. More live instruments could have enriched it.

Verdict:

Though the limited number of orchestral instruments gives this album a slightly stiff and edgy feel, some really ordered thinking has gone into framing the songs. Certainly an album to listen and ponder over. Wish the film is equally tightly knit.

A rather ‘eyebrow-arching’ adaptation of the old Aberi raga hit ‘Aayiram Nilave Vaa’. What gives it a passable listen is the ‘Chandrababu’ like interludes and some enthusiastic singing. Hmm!

Such bell-like clear articulation here. Is there so much to eulogise in a piece of ‘dhavani’? Anyway a liberal use of harp and flute add melodic value to this song, which could hit the charts.

Bhonda...
Vocals: Malathi

A ‘desi’ item number, this one. Malathi’s vocal prowess amuses, as usual. Needless to say, the nagaswaram and thavil bits alone contribute some interest value to this number.

Verdict:

Well, at least one cannot accuse Srikant Deva of any originality as far as this album is concerned! So many songs float into our minds as we listen. One certainly wishes he had put in better work, which he is capable of, going by ‘Marupadiyum oru Kadhal’.

A song that takes you around the throbbing city that Madurai is. Energetic beats and lively nagaswaram add the right life to the song. But nothing special.

Harish, after such a long time! This is a nice number but reminds you of a yesteryear Hindi hit and an old Tamil hit. The violins and mouth organ hold up the song somewhat. Harish is as pleasant as ever.

The song of an emotional father, who rediscovers the world through his son and who better than Yesudas to bring it alive? Deft notes from the flute and santoor add softness to this song which appears to be in Aberi raga.

What an impressive show of lung power by Karthik! He alone makes this song come alive in a sweet way. The raga scale appears to be Harikamboji and the playful use of trumpets and nagaswaram bring a smile to your lips. Could hit the charts for its liveliness.

Hmmm, a soft pensive number, sung just as well by Yesudas. Brings out mild pathos

Poraale...

Well, this short number has more of music than vocals. The flute is melodious.

Andipatti...

This song is somewhat similar to song no.1 in its attitude. Trumpets and mandolin try to hold your interest but your mind wanders.

Verdict:

Good use of live percussive instruments and flute characterize this album, which tries to be slightly different from routine Srikant Deva stuff. It does succeed in parts.

Produced by ‘Athirvu Thiraippattarai’ Manivannan and directed by Gowthaman, this movie, based on Neela. Padmanabhan’s literary work ‘Thalaimuraigal’ is eagerly awaited, because of its weighty story value. It has Gowthaman, Anjali, Seeman, Santhanam, Ganja Karuppu and others starring in it. Vidyasagar scores the music for the film and the album lists six tracks.

Another fast paced folk number with some heady drum work. The lyrics are amusing, really. Clear rendering of words from the singers.

A delightful number in the Karaharapriya raga scale and Tisra Nadai, where the flute darts into a bit of Hemavathi and Kanada notes, though fleetingly. This sweet duet has been well sung too. The second interlude on the strings with a western touch is very nice.

Selai Kattiya...

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

This is a song of blessing and benediction, interlaced with brother-sister sentiments. Energetic use of thavil, ghatam and native drums add a festive feeling to the song. Karthik brings a rare sowkyam to this number with his voice. The song seems to swing between Anandabairavi and Mohanam ragas.

Kanne Kaniyurangu...
Vocals: Madhu Balakrishnan, Binny Krishnakumar
Lyrics: Pachiyappan

A lullaby, this song. My, what a voice this lady has! Her effortless high-pitched notes lend this song a mild poignancy as do the rare ‘prayogas’ of Harikamboji raga notes used here. Madhu Balakrishnan comes on only at the end.

Koorappattu...

Lyrics: Pachiyappan

A bit of a dirge, this number. Probably serves to underline sorrow.

Verdict:

Vidyasagar strictly adheres to the theme and tone of this rural story. But he also weaves in his creativity here and there. High on ‘native touch’, this album surprisingly dips a little where melody is concerned. Let us see how they shine in the movie.

The very mention of the name ‘Kanimozhi’ is enough to create waves in Tamil Nadu. And producer T Siva and debutant director Sripathi Rangasami, who have named their film after the Chief Minister’s daughter, utilisied it properly to market their product.

At first, there were teaser ads in newspapers, which had nothing but the name ‘Kanimozhi’, in the back drop of the rising sun (the ruling DMK’s symbol) and a chair and a table (apparently denoting ‘seat of power’).

Then there were posters on the walls of Chennai, which again had the name in bold letters. The air was cleared only after some days that it was a teaser to a forthcoming film starring Jai, produced by Siva of Amma Creations.

Directed by Sripathi, a former associate of Venkat Prabhu, the movie has Shazahn Padamsee as heroine. She has acted opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the recent Hindi release ‘Rocket Singh’. Satheesh Chakravarthy is scoring the music, while Chidambaram is wielding the camera for ‘Kanimozhi’.

Interestingly, the first thing Siva and Sripathi did after they decided to name their film ‘Kanimozhi’ was to call the Rajya Sabha member to narrate the storyline. Only after the Chief Minister’s poet daughter said she did not have any objection with the film’s title, an official announcement was made in the media.

“She was very impressed by the script and expressed happiness that such films are a rarity in Tamil cinema. The movie has no politics in it, but a beautiful story,” says Sripathi.
